Interesting small museum

Loved seeing the history of the island. Curator was particularly helpful with our 8 year old son who searched for Lego characters and did two different appropriate quiz sheets, earning stickers. She also took the time to go over some of the exhibits with him. Fun experience!

We popped into this museum in old church in Port Charlotte. It’s full of bygone things from Islay past including WW2 section with lots about the torpedoing of the Otranto. The staff members were extremely helpful when I raised questions on my family tree. Recommended if you are interested in history or island life or it’s a wet day.

Lovely museum

Very organised and set up with COVID safety restrictions in mind. Spent a pleasant 45 mins here learning about the island - very moving displays about islanders who died during war times and interesting info about local population changes and industry. As many other Islay attractions are not open currently, it was nice to find out more. Worth a visit.

This is a lovely little cultural museum in Port Charlotte. It has items which are quite 'ordinary' but many things which are less common. DEcent level of interpretation of local history issues

Interesting local history museum near Port Charlotte

Approximately £4 per adult to get in. Close to Port Charlotte Hotel so could walk or park in road opposite entrance door of museum.
Spent about 30 minutes there think up to 1 hour is average visit.
See artefacts from WWII & local island life. We dropped in on way back from a morning outing. Restricted opening times were 11-2mon-fri note on door will confirm times if they change them.

This must not be missed - 5 stars.

My wife and I visited the museum on our second visit to the island (our daughter is now a resident) and she advised that it shouldn’t be missed. I particularly wanted to see more artefacts connected with the two shipping disasters that occurred during World War One in 1918 after reading local author Les Wilson’s excellent book ‘The Drowned And The Saved’.
There is surprisingly so much to see in the museum covering all aspects over last 200 years that we will, no doubt, return when we next visit Islay in April.
