Jeg har reist til dette i flere år, og absolutt elsker det. Vidunderlig skotsk, herlig Britisk og herlig atletiske alt i ett! Braemar har et fantastisk fellesskap atmosfære på dagen av spillene og selve arrangementet føles som en mini høylandet ol .... og Her Majesty også! Hva mer kan du ønske. En svært spennende dag ut

Høydepunktet på en flott tur. Vi hadde planlagt turen vår i nordøst høylandet rundt dette arrangementet, og de skuffet ikke. Selv om spillene og band var utmerket, den mest imponerende delen av dette arrangementet var .... tilskueren. Vi satte oss rundt var fantastisk. Veldig vennlige og svært deling med sine Scotch!! De skotter seg solgte oss i Skottland.

GO GO GO to the Braemar Gathering!

It is a once-in-a-lifetime chance that we happened to learn that the Braemar Gathering (aka the Scottish Highland Games) were to take place on the one free day we had in the area during our three weeks in Scotland in 2023. We purchased our tickets in March via phone, and received them via mail in late April. We found transportation from Edinburgh with a Grayline bus (I believe) and enjoyed the rides to and from, but most especially, enjoy the events and the food offerings. Our seats were brilliant, despite apologies from the person with whom I spoke. Second row where we could see 3-4 of the games going on at any time. The atmosphere was delightful; the weather cooperated; the age range of the audience was infant to 90+. The food lines were very long, but we eventually got our fish and chips with a beer. Bathrooms - portapotties - were clean and we never waited long. Can you imagine how much fun it was, and an honor, too, when the Royal Family came? Charles, his sister and Camilla. After viewing the festivities and giving out some trophies, they drove past us in our 2nd row, waving to all. What a thrill!

Fun Experience in the Highlands

It was a lovely event. If you are from the US, I would compare it to a county fair. You couldn't see all of the activities from your seat, and it was difficult to walk around the field to see the other events. Assuming it is set up the same each year, choose a seat to the left as you enter the arch. This is where the hammer throwing, stone throwing, tug of war, and the caber toss occur. We sat to the right, and we saw mostly track and field events for younger competitors and the dancing events. It had an exuberant atmosphere, which we enjoyed. The pipe bands were very nice. There are lots of choices for food and drinks, but definitely bring enough cash. The internet service for using credit cards was out for most of the time were were there. The parking is free and plentiful and close enough to walk to the field. The King, Queen, and Princess Royal attended. Apparently, they arrive at 3 PM each year. We were at the event from 9:30AM-3:30PM. Far too long of a stay. I recommend maybe 4 hours at the most.

Great day

Great day, saw King/Queen/Princess Anne, great bagpipe bands, fun events. A once in lifetime for us from USA experience. Only issue we had was the portable toilets at the parking field were in horrible condition overflowing by the end of the day - there were too few toilets (only 5) and needed to be maintained all day. We left about 3/4 hour before end of games and did not have any traffic issues or delay beyond maybe 5 minutes getting out - traffic to and from Stonehaven was light. We used the shuttle (we’re in our 70s) to get from car park to and from the games entrance. We had great uncovered stand seats right by entrance where HRH entered and where the bands entered, only 4 rows back. Reasonably priced, but bought as soon as they went on sale last winter.

Good Games But Parking Hell

The Gathering is one of many such events (Highland Games) which take place all over Scotland in the summer months. The Braemar version is the most famous, largely because the King/Queen normally attends, so it is an opportunity to see the “royals” close up. Aside from that, and the resultant large crowd (more of which below), the Braemar games are not much different from other such games, so if you are not a royalist then you might find events elsewhere a bit more informal and fun. WARNING : parking is an absolute nightmare. There is one public carpark, in a field with only one entrance/exit, and it took us 3 hours to get out of the carpark yesterday. So, as I say, unless you are an ardent monarchist, you might be better off visiting another Highland Games elsewhere with smaller crowds and better organised parking.

Ruined by terrible parking management in official car park

The Braemar games is an incredible day, there is no doubt about that. But what completely lets it down, and in fact ruins and takes away from the whole day is the horrendous parking and traffic management after the event. Official parking is in a dedicated field, a short walk to the park - all great. Upon the games finishing the car park is utter carnage. The employed staff had absolutely no system in place and it took us a total of 90mins to leave from getting in our car to getting out of the car park, 60mins of those we were completely gridlocked and unable to move. This has been the case three times we have been, and because of this we will absolutely not return. There is no where near enough staff to manage this correct and it should absolutely be done by the police, who know what they are doing. This issue seriously needs addressing, as the many hundreds of cars also stuck would agree. We attend many games every year and none of them have ever had parking issues which have been anywhere near as bad as this.

Just stopped by to see where....

Just stopped by to see where the games are held on our way to Balmoral. Even though we were almost the only visitors, you can scene the atmosphere of the games. The 2023 Gathering will take place on Saturday 2nd Sept 2023.
We received a really warm welcome from a lady who was taking money for the postcards. She told us so much information about the games and the history, it was a pleasure to speak to her. There is a small museum to explore also a cafe area, with delicious looking cakes, we had had a large breakfast, so only had coffee, which I can recommend.

The best of the Highland games!

The coolest experience in my lifetime. I (grown adult) went with my folks and this was just the most incredible experience I have ever had. I would love to go again one day. We purchased all tickets and hotels far in advance.

A Memorable and Very Fun Day!

The Braemar Gathering was a highlight in our 2.5 weeks exploring the UK. A day filled with sport, pageantry, celeb sightings (I ordered lunch beside Judi Dench and Hugh Bonneville), people watching, etc.
I was shocked to see how small the stadium was and how it seemed more "local" than a huge arena visited by the Royal Family (unfortunately the Queen was ill and didn't make her appearance and then croaked days later). My kids had a blast watching the events, walking around and playing with other littles at our seats. We all enjoyed seeing the tug-of-war all day, the highland dancing on the stage, and the caber toss. I was cheering so loud for those who did the Hill Race! What an event!
And I was so pleased the public was allowed to participate. My oldest little competed in the three legged race and was so proud of her prize and that she was on the field!
I don't have enough good things to say. I was so pleased with our first highland games experience. From parking to departure and everything in between. Top notch day!

What a Day

The hospitality and general friendliness made the whole event a wonderful day. There were so many things going on at once that you can never be bored. we sat in the grandstands and the atmosphere was at times electrifying.
