This place is just awesome. Not as many remains as some of the other abbeys in the Tweed valley, but what's left is very beautiful. What makes Dryburgh Abbey really special, and head and shoulders above the rest, is is's setting. The surrounding park and magnificent trees, together with the peace and serenity of this wonderful place elevate it to another level, and together with the beautiful colour of the stone, I guarantee you'll be blown away by it.

Set amongst trees near to the River Tweed, this is a very peaceful place. There's parking and toilets outside the grounds, then walk through the shop to get to the abbey. An outline plan and list of trees are available to borrow from the shop, otherwise there are notice boards and labels on some buildings to help interpret the site. That said, it's not an easy site to get ones head around.
There are a few graves on the grass by the side of the path, but the most important ones of Sir Walter Scott and Douglas Haigh are in the North Transept. Down by the crypt is a small museum of masonry found on site. Some of the buildings still have some of the original carvings and masonry in situ, especially around the doors.
There is more to the ruins than at some other abbeys, especially in England.

A truly special visit, in every way; the surrounding landscape was and is extraordinary! A little tricky to reach by car, if you’re unfamiliar with the area, but so well worth the visit. It’s no surprise Sir Walter Scott chose this spot, as his final resting place. Ample parking, clean toilet facilities, quaint ticket office and gift shop, and very friendly and helpful staff members. The entrance fee was surprisingly reasonable too. There was such beauty and serenity about the grounds, with places you could sit to relax and admire the abbey ruins. Good story boards, nicely conserved ruins, and moderately easy to walk around. There are steps to climb, uneven ground and interesting high points within the ruins, that offered a great viewpoint of the surrounding area. Comfortable shoes a must. I enjoyed my visit so much and most definitely and highly recommend a stop here.

Beautiful Abbey Ruin in a lovely woodland setting
We stopped here after visiting Jedburgh Abbey
It was really quiet and lovely to walk around the grounds, seeing squirrels and other wildlife
Some amazing variety of species of trees

Enjoyed our visit as it was good to visit a ruined abbey where walls etc are still there! We have visited other places where you have to use your imagination. The information provided was very interesting and helpful. Worth a visit if you are in the area.

Handsome ruin in a beautiful, wooded area. Unlike some other dilapidated abbeys nearby, this site is almost entirely open to the public.
Sir Walter Scott's grave comes as a perk. There is also a tree of +900 years old but it is not impressive.

My first visit from Newcastle England, its much bigger and more there than I thought, and so tranquil. Also sir Walter Scott is laid to rest here.a bit off the beaten track but I like it like that personally. small shop, parking for maybe 10 cars. Huge shoutout to the member of staff named Lorna, who was so friendly, helpful and kind. One of those people from a visit you remember, she's a credit to Historic Scotland. I will definitely be back.

On google maps I see this is a non accessible road, Can I park near the hotel and walk from there or there is some other parking for the abbey itself?
Skrevet 3. april 2019
The abbey has a small carpark outside the entrance hut.

How do I get to Dryburgh Abbey from
Edinburgh using public transportation?
Thanks
Skrevet 5. mars 2015
I see you have had 3 answers. It is a little way from St Boswells so be prepared for the walk. There are very good toilets just outside the Abbey and the Dryburgh Hotel next door for refreshments.
