Potential Unfulfilled
okt. 2021
This is an example of potential unfulfilled. The residence is a historic example of a safe house in the underground railway. The museum requires more focus and research. It should be a small museum with depth on the subject of the underground railway. Instead, it is small general museum on slavery in the United States, going over well-trodden subjects in a rather shallow fashion. It is surprisingly short on research of the safe house, its inhabitants and how did it fit in the larger scheme of the underground railway. Thus, there is not much information as to what drove the Burkle family into risking their lives to operate the safe house. There is not even a simple family genealogy depicting what happened to the different family members during and after the civil war. Basic research would include perusing census data, property rolls, tax and business records, among others.

Love learning my Heritage

Loved the tour and the information. The two ladies there were very informative and helpful the one critique was that first part was too long to stand in one place too look at walls.. I loved when the tour started and we got to have a live tour guide,, Great museum .

WOW!

We learned so much about our history when we visited Slave Haven! The two ladies that were there that day were so informative and helpful. A great way to learn some history that you don't learn in school books.

Very informative with lots of artifacts. I love to learn about slavery so the quilt display and what they mean was very intreaging to me.
Disappointed as no picture taking was allowed in museum. But, I can respect that

Worthy topic you should know about

We visited this museum today. It was supposed to open at 10:00 but didn’t open till 10:15.

From our experience we have 2 areas of concern.
First there was only one employee and she had to stop what she was doing as people arrived. She would collect admission and go back to the first group, then subsequent groups. Actually we were in that first group listening to a recorded explanation of the museum. She did the best she could under bad circumstances.

Second, this museum has so much potential but falls short due to the overcrowding of “stuff”. It feels like people donated old items and the museum owners just couldn’t turn anything down.

To carry forth in its mission of educating the public on the important topics of slavery and the Underground Railroad … might I recommend 1) increasing staff numbers and perhaps getting volunteers. 2) look at the items in the house and ask “which of these help explain the story”? There are excellent articles and photos that deserve serious attention. Yet other items are just clutter.

PS No photography allowed inside.

An educational and sobering experience
jul. 2021
This is an excellent museum, one of the best I've visited. It tells the story of the slave trade and the Underground Railroad in a very graphic and informative way. It's both an educational and sobering experience. We actually went into a basement space where runaway slaves hid. A must visit in the Memphis area.

Important subject, rude and rushed employees.
jul. 2021 • Familie
I visited this museum with three other people on July 3rd, 2021. We were supposed to receive a senior discount and college student discount but were so rushed through that they didn’t even ask and immediately just took our card for payments. No big deal there, I’m not mad about a $2 discount.

There were about 25 people in our tour, which was very stifling and cramped in such a small house. I struggled to see and hear everything because everyone just stands shoulder to shoulder and squeezes and strains their way to see/hear. There was no time to ask any questions at all or to spend an extra minute in the rooms to look around and learn; you were simply quickly ushered into the next room. Inside of the cellar where the slaves were allegedly hidden whilst waiting for a safe time to continued their journey to freedom, we were actually told to leave because our tour guide “didn’t want to stay down here any longer.” This history is very important and the whole situation just seemed like a very huge rush and money making scheme. Not to mention, there was another guest that almost got into a fight with the manager, because the manager was being rude.

All in all, glad I came and saw this historical site, but sorely disappointed in the way it is being run.

Meaningful experience

The horrors of slavery and the courage of people come alive in this experiential museum. It was well worth the modest $12 fee.
