Where were the Impressionist paintings?
nov. 2019
We came to the Dixon to see the collection of Impressionist paintings. Unfortunately with the two modern exhibits taking up the gallery space, they were out on loan for the next few months....The two exhibits were not really our thing.

The coffee shop was nice, and there still were some interesting pieces to look at. Because of our level of membership at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, we did not pay admission at this reciprocal museum, which softened the blow a bit. I am sure we would have enjoyed our visit more had the permanent collection been there.

As we were there later in the afternoon, we did not have time to go to the gardens.

Signage to parking and entry could have been better.

In Order to Really Appreciate the Grounds, Visit in the Spring and/or Summer
nov. 2019
Since we were there in the late fall we couldn't get the full benefit of the grounds, which although nicely manicured had turned brown due to the weather. The galleries, one of which was the main floor of the former Dixon residence were nice and had excellent exhibits. We got to see the Friedel Dzubas exhibit which is there through January 5th, They offer senior and AAA discounts.

Lovely gardens and gallery in Memphis
nov. 2019
I've been to Memphis several times, but this past weekend I visited the Dixon for the very first time. And I really enjoyed the experience! The gardens aren't huge, but they're very nice, and there are lots of tables to sit and enjoy the gardens. But the gallery was lovely. Right now, they have two exhibits on abstract expressionism: "Abstract Expressionism: A Social Revolution, Selections from the Haskell Collection" and "Friedel Dzubas: The Ira A. Lipman Family Collection" (both through January 5, 2020). I haven't had many opportunities to see such modern exhibits at museums, and I really enjoyed both exhibits. In addition to those temporary exhibits, the gallery has a permanent collection area, a small area that displays art by local artists, and a small cafe and shop. I recommend going when there is an exhibit you're interested in (because the permanent collection is very small), but I thought the $7 admission for adults was very fair and our visit very enjoyable overall. I'd certainly go back when I'm next in Memphis to see their next temporary exhibits! Lovely place to visit in Memphis!

Great place to visit in Memphis
jun. 2019
Dixon Gallary is a wonderful place to spend a few hours. it is very accessible. you'll have to walk a little but the tour outside and inside are both worth a small amount of effort. The grounds are beautiful and the art work and collectibles inside are also very pretty and interesting. It's a wonderful event to enjoy, peaceful and relaxing.

Outstanding!

The gardens alone are worth the visit. But the art puts this way over the top. I went for the permanent collection, which boasts some of the finest impressionist and post-impressionist holdings outside of Europe. It did not disappoint. I found myself face to face with over 30 exquisite works by Monet, Cezanne, Renoir, Degas, Pisarro, Seurat and many others. These are marvelously displayed in a former private home, placed on the walls of beautifully furnished rooms with NO velvet ropes, screaming kids, or glass or plexi protections. Quality lighting and presentation add to an experience that I enjoyed most of the time with Nobody else in the room!!! If thats not enough, the price of entry? free! ( sat am). I have lived in NYC and Paris and must tell you-if you are an art lover , this Memphis jewel is a must see!

Don’t miss it!

We thoroughly enjoyed this garden! It’s smaller for those of us who have a limited number of steps. Many inspiring garden ideas and photo opportunities. Love this place! The gallery is exceptional as well.

We visited on a Food Truck Friday (which were held every Friday from 11:30am to 1:30pm, April through June). Admission to the gardens is free during Food Truck Fridays. So, we started with the gardens, before going to the gallery for a meditation class. Afterwards, we had tacos for lunch from El Mero Taco truck. Then, we returned to the gallery for a leisurely look at the art. We had a delightful day at the Dixon. Highly recommended.

The gardens at the Dixon are spectacular. We walked through a path with a fantastic selection of ferns. The formal gardens around the fountain are gorgeous, and an ideal site for lunch.

The art is very interesting. The exhibit on William McGregor Paxton and Elizabeth Okie Paxton: An Artistic Partnership, was fascinating in its exposition of aesthetics and cultural mores of the 19th Century. The exhibit on Countess de Castiglione: The Allure of Creative Self-Absorption, was fascinating in its exposition of how weird people were in the late 19th Century (I’m afraid we’ve made little progress since then.). The permanent collection is modest, though not without its gems, particularly when it comes to paintings and sculpture. We usually skip the decorative arts collection (porcelain and pewter).

NOTE: I’d suggest asking the security staff for their favorite works and why. We did several times, and we found each conversation illuminating and rewarding.

Stupendous special exhibit

Went to see the Paxton exhibit and was very impressed by the number and quality of paintings in this special display; but we had time and was also thrilled with the permanent collection and the beautiful gardens. Friday is "food truck friday" so admission early in the day was free!

Gorgeous art, gardens and new kids area!
jun. 2019 • Familie
We visited the Dixon to see the special Paxton exhibit. However, while traveling with a toddler our time (at least my time as the mom) was very limited. One of the security guards suggested we (my 20 month son and I) check out the new children's interactive area that had just opened about two weeks ago. My son loved coloring and playing with the little toys in the children's room. We had the opportunity to speak with one of the art teachers (believe his name was JT) and he was so kind, friendly and informative. If we lived in Memphis we would certainly plan to take advantage of all the art classes for kids! I loved hearing the history and vision of the children's room and hope the children around Memphis enjoy it for years to come!

Beauty inside & out!
mai 2019 • Familie
One thing I love about the Dixon is the mix of beautiful (mostly 19th century European) art inside & the gorgeous small but very diverse set of very well-kept gardens outside this old estate. Outdoor sculpture garden meets art gallery. They have a nice cafe too!
