So much history, and staff at gift shop/reception are so accommodating. I hate going up hills though, so if your like me, panic, coz it's a steep one. Very lovely few hours spent here

We arrived at the castle - free parking as the machine was broken!
2 adults 1 teen cost is £23.50.
We lasted about 20/30 mins.
The dog isn’t allowed anywhere apart from ground floor bit of the castle.
It wasnt large as we thought.
The views were lovely though.
Also an important thing to note - if travelling there by car make sure you take the turning onto the FFORDDISAF road and NOT the very steep narrow winding road from the bottom of the hill.
We couldn’t get all the way up it, we skidded and nearly hit the wall and had to roll backwards to the bottom. Very scary.
Anyway I’m sure it’s an amazing place for people who live castles etc. Just not value for money for us.

Visited in October 2023 during a day trip to Harlech. Lots to explore and some great views to be had. Very reasonable entry fee too. Its also dog friendly, although dogs can't go on the upper floors which is understandable. Can be slippy and muddy in places when it's wet, so wear suitable footwear!

Great half day out at the castle. It had been wet so lots of puddles - wellies or walking boots needed!
Reasonably priced and plenty to see for a few hours. There was an activity for children too which my son enjoyed. The stairs up to the top are very uneven and dark so be prepared. Views from the top are amazing and there is a nice sturdy fence for those who aren't great with heights!
Cafe was nice and reasonably priced - we had coffee and cake.
Parking was a bit of a nightmare, there is a very small pay and display car park next door (not associated with the castle) - max stay 3 hours. There's a larger car park further through the village and some more at the bottom of the (very!) big hill

Good castle to visit, but not much to see compared to others nearby. The introductory film was an interesting experience with things on three sides, but there was not much content. Reasonably accesible with a few disabled spaces in the nearest car park. I was limited in that I struggle with spiral staircases. Good views of the surrounding area.

Very nice castle, lovely views.
Slightly dangerous with children so keep hold of them at all times. Some steep cliff like drops with no hand rail etc. Some areas of the wall have fallen away and there just put a small bar. I'm just concerned a child could easy fall off.
But lots of information and we really loved it

After visiting Conway Castle a few days earlier, Harlech Castle was on my list for a visit. The parking was not convenient and had to walk across town to get to the castle. The castle itself was a very good example of the architecture of the times. There was maintenance work going on which made a lot of the castle inaccessible. All in all it was definitely worth the trip.

My partner and I visited Harlech castle today and were very impressed with how intact it was given it was built in the late 13th Century. There aren’t too many information boards as you walk around but enough to give you the basic information required to understand it’s history and you can buy a more detailed guide book if you wished. Personally we found this gave us a good chance to imagine how things would have been for ourselves.
The setting is stunning and we felt access to the walls and towers was good given the age of the castle - if a bit breezy at the top of the tower!!
We got the 39 bus from Barmouth which stops at the town at the top of the hill making it easy to access the castle - and then we walked down the world’s steepest road (it is indeed steep!) back to the railway station where we were able to pick the 39 bus back up again. A good way round to do it. It was about £6 each return and a lovely trip along the coast.
We had a tea, a coffee and nice almond and orange cake at the cafe for just over ten pounds which I don’t think is too bad for these sort of places.

Superbly maintained 1200s castle with lots of additional info on its history. Plenty to see with parking and cafe. Amazing views.

Hi .yes it is a ruin , however the walls and interior walls and staircases are intact and you can walk up the spiral staircase, i dont think there are any facilities for anyone to get up the staircase in a wheelchair etc etc .

I think about £6/adult £20/family
and free for disabled people and their carers.

You mentioned family and dog. Can I ask are there restrictions on being able to take you dog with you??

While officially dogs are welcome, my recollection is that this doesn't apply to all parts (for safety reasons). Your dog needs to be kept on a leash at all times.

How far is the castle from the train station. We have 4 small children?

Harlech train station is very close to the castle but you do have to walk up a very steep hill! Shouldn't take longer than 10-15 minutes and you can get a delicious ice cream at the top :)

How is it for car parking? Charges and distance from castle

Car park at front of castle charges £1 an hour (max stay 3 hours) - pay & display. It's not very big, so at peak times it may well be full.

I agree with the other answer - yes, you will get a wheelchair into the castle to get a sense of it but the rooms and walls are not accessible. That said it is worth looking inside to get a sense of it do go for it!

Are dogs allowed?

Dogs on leads are allowed, however probably wouldn't let them up the towers as the steps are very steep. However they would enjoy wandering around the grounds.
We are visiting the area for only two days, last day today and are looking for somewhere where we can also take our two little dogs. Is Harlech castle dog friendly?

Yes as long as they are on a lead..
