Bucket list - ticked!
Have been staying in Barmouth for years and always wanted to go on the train, especially over the Barmouth bridge!
Did it finally and it did not disappoint.
We only did Barmouth to Machynlleth this time but we will do up the other way next time.
Spent 2 hours in Machynlleth before catching the train to Aberdovey. Another 2 hours wandering around here and then train back to Barmouth. £11 odd each.
Beautiful line on a stunning day.
Special shout out to the guard who was brilliant. Knowledgeable and very friendly.
Will definitely do it again.

You have to do this Aberdovey to pwllheli with a ranger ticket £13.50 9.30am all day. The scenery is fantastic and you can stop off where you like but baring in mind the trains are every two hours so plan your day. The only gripe, it was a warm day so it can get a bit uncomfortable in the carriage especially when the train stops for any length of time. Barmouth good beach and ideal for families with young children as there are amusements and small fair, pwllheli little bit quieter than Barmouth but still has things for young family with lovely beach 10 min walk from station and Wetherspoons for a good cheap family meal. Harlech definitely worth a stop has a lovely castle to explore with good cafes, pubs and niche shops. Aberdovey I would say a bit more up market with nice pubs, shops. It’s on an estuary so it’s a harbour/fishing/water sports town. Very pretty has a beach of sorts with dunes and walks well worth a stop off.

Such great deal, travelled up and down the coast, seeing various beaches and scenery. So comfortable, even buffet trolley. Staff so welcoming and helpful. Even saw the Osprey on the nest at Dyfi. Plan to repeat.

Although the frequency of services is poor (approximately every 2 hours) this is mainly due to the track layout with passing points with single line track between them. Apart from the local passengers including many school children, the number of visitors continuing to use the railway, is an encouraging endorsement of the Welsh Government transport policy. It is also a very scenic ride, often at 20 MPH.
In fact, it is both a real social, and scenic railway passing through, and linking some of Wales' most breathtakingly beautiful countryside such at the Barmouth's Mawddach estuary, and the English built fortress at Harlech. Try to get a window seat -it is really special.

We got the train from Penhelig station which is a request stop and took the train to Porthmadog, about 1.5 hours.

Unfortunately the weather wasn’t great so we didn’t see the scenery at its best but is was still great to be a train that follows the coast, almost on the beach at times, with the hills on the other side.

It was good value for the two of us and a different way to see the area.

Hubby and me visited Harlech a couple of days ago on Wednesday. Harlech Train Station is one of 33 stations on the scenic Cambrian Coast Railway Line. Some of these individual stations are listed separately on T.A. but Harlech isn't. From Harlech, you can travel north all the way to the end of the line in Pwllheli. Trains run every 2 hours (approximately). Facilities are minimal. There are visual departure/arrival screens and audible announcements. Unfortunately, the whole site is not wheelchair friendly. There are no toilets but the Council public toilets (recently refurbished) are close by on the main A496 road near The Queens Hotel. It is possible to walk up the The Castle (big) and Town Centre (small) but this is via a very steep lane!

I didn’t even know this was considered an attraction. I just saw it as a means of getting from A to B. The scenery north or Dovey is stunning. Got the coast and salt marsh on one side and the mountains on the other side. Trains aren’t very often, one every two hours and a lot of the stations are request stops. I am glad that I had the opportunity to ride this train on more than one occasion. It follows a part of the Welsh coast that is unrivalled. I can’t think of another like it. Some of the Devon trains from Paddington have a bit of nice coastal scenery but nothing like ad much as this.

Cloudless sky day with sprinkling of snow on the mountains and 1000 start to Criccieth (never been before). We stayed there for about an hour and caught the 1137 or so from Criccieth back towards Barmouth. Stopped off for a couple of hours at Porthmadog (not been there since 1977). Charming and everyone hard at work at the railway to get things ready for the 2019 season. Back on the train ready for anther stop at Harlech. Climbed the hill to the castle and sat in the superb restaurant there sipping coffee and enjoying a sandwich while looking at snow covered Snowdon and Harlech castle to the left. Back to Barmouth after dark but a wonderful day. It would have been even nicer had the windows been cleaned but it was January.

A real delight and dog friendly as well. The trains run regularly and are always on time. So reasonable and convenient too!
