A Very Special Place
nov. 2021
Spent two nights in Portmeirion Village recently. Stayed in one of the village rooms. Everything about our visit was perfect. The room was large, warn and spotlessly clean, with a lovely view over the village. We ate at the hotel first night which was superb and at the castle the second night which was also very good. We explored the village, did the various walks, browsed in the shop and generally soaked up the architecture and atmosphere. We arrived around 6pm on the first evening and left around 10.30a, on the last morning so we really only had one full day there which was enough. Any longer and we would have been looking for something else to do in the surrounding area. We really enjoyed this break - despite the weather it felt like we were on the continent versus in Wales.

Don't bother in November
nov. 2021 • Par
We visited in November and found that almost everything was shut.

The first of two places that were open was a gift shop selling a bizarre range of items - everything from a blackhead remover tool to crockery (and Portmeirion branded wine, made in Bulgaria...). The second was an ice cream parlour which sold some slightly underwhelming ice cream; I had the Penderyn whisky flavour and it was half melted by the time it was handed to me, no doubt because the freezer thermometer read -13.2°C.

The constant sound of leaf blowers meant any sense of tranquility was ruined.

The owners clearly hate dogs (I've never seen so many "no dogs" signs on my way into an attraction in my life). So, we had to leave the dog in a holiday cottage where you're not meant to leave dogs unattended, and risk the holiday cottage owner finding out. Not wanting to leave him longer than absolutely necessary, we spent less time than we otherwise would there. We had to skip the woodland / coastal walks, which would have been perfect for him. We wouldn't have minded paying a bit extra to take him in - but it really did spoil our visit.

Overall - £8 each to visit a village where almost everything is closed, the leafblowers don't shut up, and a member of the family isn't welcome? Bit of a rip off really.

Disappointing

So disappointing!! £8 entry fee at 4pm in November. 1 coffee place open!! Really!! You should be informed nothing open or at least a late pm discount? So disappointing as I was looking forward to visiting 😞

A surprisingly disappointing visit to be honest.
okt. 2021
Being of a certain age I remember The Prisoner, so being in the area it was high on the list of places to visit.

We arrived at c half ten on a bit of a miserable early October mid week morning. Large car park and a friendly welcome but overall it was an underwhelming visit. Perhaps I was naive but I expected the buildings to be brightly coloured as per the photos you see but some needed a bit of tlc Most of the houses were either residential properties or holiday lets so access to certain areas was restricted.

To be honest it didn't take long to look round and for some reason it just didn't do it for me. The Prisoner shop was well stocked and there was the Portmeiron Pottery shop and another shop in the village. I think you can do a hillside walk and you are also able to walk by the water near the hotel. Some decent seats around the village.

We were there just over an hour- obviously our choice but that works out to be very expensive and I don't think we missed much. I was disappointed in the attraction and if in the area again it wouldn't be at the top of my list to re-visit.

Birthday surprise
nov. 2021
My wife is very good at surprises. We both had birthdays at the beginning of the month so she secretly booked an overnight stay in the village, including dinner and breakfast. Clothed in Autumn splendour the village looked fantastic. It wasn't sunny but the colours were beautiful. The reds of the acers among the greens and oranges were spectacular. The sea was a flat calm offering perfect reflections of the surrounding hills. We had a great view of the estuary from our room in Cliff House. Well appointed and comfortable. We wandered down to the restaurant for dinner. The dazzling array of colours all lit perfectly. Quite magical. Dinner was excellent. The menu was interesting, lots of autumnal tastes on offer. I had pigeon to start followed by Arctic Char. A delicate tasting fish. The staff throughout our visit were extremely polite and helpful, with a good sense of humour (an important quality IMO). We strolled back up the hill to our room. We awoke the next morning to the sight of mist over the estuary, a moody start to the day. Breakfast in the restaurant was hearty and set us up for the trip back to Anglesey through the gorgeous Welsh countryside. All in all a memorable experience. Thank you to all the staff for making us feel special.

Nice chill out

2nd visit to this wonderful quirky village, staff are all excellent, can’t do enough for you. Food is beautiful in both hotel and castle. The rooms are lovely, clean and have everything you could think of in them. We stayed in a village room this time and you have your own parking with permit. The is a shuttle service to take you up and down to hotel or castle. We ate in hotel 1 night and Castle 2nd night.

Terrible, disappointed, expensive
sep. 2021
Bloomin expensive.
We were done and dusted in an hour and a half, and that was including an ice cream.
Its expensive for looking at the outside of some of the properties, as the are all holiday lets, so parts of the grounds are residents only.
Not good if you have limited mobility as built on a hill, and pushing a wheelchair could be a challenge.
The local castles a much cheaper and better value for money go there instead

Magical village
nov. 2021
Lovely weekend spent in one of the self catering cottages in Portmeirion; a return visit after originally coming here 30 years ago. We love this place and find it quite magical. Disappointed that some reviewers didn't find the magic - it's not a place that's filled with things to do, the attraction is the wealth of architectural detail and the many different buildings, set into a hilly coastal landscape - we happily walked around taking many photographs and enjoyed a walk past the hotel, into the woodlands and returning past the chinese lake. The hotel restaurant is very good and well worth booking in for a meal as a treat and the self catering cottages are lovely for a weekend away.

Shocking treatment
sep. 2021
We visited here in September and had an awful experience. We didn’t even get in. I travelled to North Wales for a holiday with Portmeirion as one of our places we must visit. I am disabled and in a wheelchair and came with my husband and in laws and my assistance dog. Upon approaching the booth we were very curtly to,d. O dogs allowed. When my husband explained I had an assistance dog the staff member asked my husband what issue the dog was for. Hubby was quite taken aback as we have never been asked this before and told the staff member that as far as we are aware I is our understand that this question cannot be asked. We told him the dog stays on my lap at all times ( he is a small dog) and always travels this way as he also has health problems. My husband asked why he wouldn’t let us in with the assistance dog and within a few seconds we were surrounded by more staff members who were extremely rude and told us ‘you are in Wales now’ . We wanted my in laws to stay and visit as they had. Been really keen but they were so shocked at our treatment they refused to go in. We would never attempt to go again or recommend anyone else to after this. I left in tears.

HUGELY DISAPPOINTING!!
nov. 2021
HUGELY DISAPPOINTING!!

Am prepared to accept we were just out of season, but even then the entrance fee (50% discounted to £8 a head for time of year) seemed greatly overpriced !

The website was misleading as to what would be open - there was just one poorly stocked cafe near the entrance. Lady at the gate on way out suggested that the other that was supposed to be open had been moved into the shop, but there were no signs of that.

Certainly won’t be coming back, even in the high season.

(Toss up between poor and terrible, but some of the views save it from being terrible)
