Disappointing this time

Portmeirion has always been one of my favourite places, we have visited and stayed there on numerous occasions. On any other visit I would have awarded 5 stars but not for our recent visit. Check-in at the castle was easy and I am surprised no-one thought of it before. Our driver was waiting for us at the carpark and quickly transported us and our luggage to our room. We were on time at the hotel for our evening dinner reservation and were quickly shown to our seats. The restaurant was only half full but we waited over 20 minutes for them to take our order. The complimentary drinks as part of our package never materialised nor did they bring the water they offered us. Although the food was beautifully cooked and fine dining means small meals, our portions did seem very small. On returning to our room we found there was no pulley cord to close the bedroom curtains and had to sleep with them open. Breakfast the next morning was a more substantial meal as one might expect but we had to ask twice for the toast.
On check-out we found a service charge had been added to our bill. We were not told it was a discretionary charge (ie a voluntary tip) so presumed it was a mandatory (compulsory) charge and paid it even though I believed that the package I paid for was the total cost. When we got home I checked my booking documentation, their Welcome Pack, the menu, their website but was none the wiser. By chance I happened to look at the hotel's lunch menu and there it stated that a 10% discretionary charge was added to the bill. But we didn't eat lunch only dinner and did not see this notice. (This information has now been added to the hotel's dinner menu). A discretionary charge is not a compulsory charge just because it's added to a bill, you can either pay it, not pay it or pay any other amount you wish, ie, tip or not tip as you might do anywhere. Portmeirion is becoming expensive, it's now £18 for adult daily entry. We'll go again sometime as I love visiting the village, but only if costs don't become too excessive.

Recently visited with my son.
Anyone thinking of visiting Portmeirion....do not bother.
Over priced and awful.
Complete waste of £36 for two people.

Not that impressed - not worth the entrance fee in my opinion.

We had so looked forward to visiting here for some time.
But to be honest it was disappointing.
Staff unwelcoming/ bordering on rude. No atmosphere. Cafe just wants to take your money we measly portions and hurried thoughtless service. I was so upset for the older generation to be honest- as this place takes energy to look around and they were hurried and ignored in the cafe.
In my opinion they need to try a lot harder- be more welcoming and appreciate their guests. I was so unimpressed after driving hours to get here (4.5hrs) I left after 45 minutes. It wasn’t what I was expecting at all. It’s overhyped and money focused .

Only go if you’re old and coupled

Hate to say it but we really hated this place. No fault of the staff who were lovely but it just wasn’t for us. It felt artificial- like Disney. We went in March so I’m sure it’s nicer in warmer weather but there just wasn’t much to do. We were traveling as friends so maybe it would be better if we were there romantically! The room was large but decorated oddly with a weird mix of old and modern fixtures. Dinner was delicious and the staff were very friendly (thanks Tommy!) but we were also the youngest there by about 30 years and we’re 50!

Everyone must experience Port Meirean

Absolutely the most wonderful experience. From the point of booking to arriving and during our stay nothing short of excellence. & professional customer care.

Our room was based in the village and it nothing short of perfect. With a beautiful living room, bedroom and 2 beautiful balconies we were spoiled.

We ate dinner at the Castle and breakfast down in the waterfront hotel. The service and food was perfect.

Can I just also finish by saying that each and every member of staff who we had dealings with including the housekeeping were amazing ... thankyou for making our stay filled with lifelong memories.

A place like no other

This site is a fairy tale. A village like no other, built in an Italian style on the slopes down to the Dwyryd River below. Every detail from little figures on the walls and statues to the various designs of the many buildings add to the unreal feeling of a little Italy in North Wales. We came on a day visit mid-week during the off-season so some of the shops and cafés were closed. And it was grey and drizzly weather. But one can imagine the beauty of this village on a sunny summer's day. You have to book tickets in advance online.

Magical….

We had our honeymoon in Anchor 2, thirty one years ago, it was just as delightful then as it was when we stayed in Sept last year.
When staying in the village the best time of day is the early morning, especially in the summer and again in the evening, when the lights are on and everything is quiet, to walk along and hear the tinkle of the fountain in the Piazza….pure magic!
We have been back many times over the years, staying in various places around the village. One of the quieter suites was Villa Winch as was Unicorn, especially if you don’t want people passing outside your windows, although that said you do get to hear some very funny conversations!
On one memorable visit we awoke to falling snow therefore being treated to a white Christmas - the walk down to lunch at the hotel was so magically beautiful (I hate snow normally!) as was the rest of the day.
Throughout the years the one constant has been the warm welcome given by the staff from arriving to departing, they all do an outstanding job of work. Thank you!

Fabulous Visit

Just spent 2 nights at Hotel . Service fabulous. I am slightly un mobile so need a motility scooter this was no problem the staff transported it to the hotel from the car for me no worries. The 2 nights in the restaurant were an absolute delight welcoming staff and couldn't be more attentive. Food fabulous service superb. Keep it up Portmerion and see you next year John Diamond

Tourist trap!

Where to start, over priced 1 hours walk round. Looking at ginger bread houses. No charm, no authenticity. Absolute worst experience in Wales. Overpriced fantasy, cafe wasn't too bad.

Even the rain was magical

On a windswept and rainy weekend, we spent the days hunkered down in the best place possible, the Watch House and viewed the turbulent weather on the sea. Making occasional forays out to the Castle and the hotel.
Night one, had us ferried up to Castle for a lovely brasserie meal, the only annoyance being the rain, that stopped us taking a leisurely walk back to the village through the woods.
The weather further curtailed any ventures into the woods the next day, so we instead indulged in an afternoon tea, with doggy bags as evidence of the indulgence, and our need to keep something back as we knew we were going to have the chef's Great British tasting menu that night.

And what a menu, all the dishes were delightful, with everyone praising the Scollop dish in particular. We then returned to our room for a perfect night's sleep, and a woke on our last day to perfect sunshine, with the birds singing their delight, and visiting on the terrace in hope of done of the scones that we still had. All in all a perfect retreat from the real world, and we will be back again to sample the villages delights as soon as possible.

All too soon out weekend was over, but we will definitely be back,
