Self guided tour of the large plantation using an audio guide provided by the Hermitage. The tour of President Jackson’s home is with a tour guide.
A lot of interesting information on both tours. The home is furnished with the original furniture and wall coverings. The garden is large, but since it was November there wasn’t any vegetation to marvel at. However, the family graveyard is in the garden.
Well worth investing 3 hours or so.

Prima di partire insieme ad un collega abbiamo prenotato un tour guidato di 2 ore e finalmente ci presentiamo in perfetto orario in biglietteria. Eppure i nostri biglietti danno un errore. Ad una più attenta disamina, scopriamo che avevo prenotato i biglietti per il giorno prima. Convinto che ormai i soldi li avevo buttati invece le gentilissime signore ci spostano sul tour del giorno facendo un'eccezione visto che c'era un solo posto libero e noi eravamo in due. Grazie grazie grazie!
Il tour è una bellissima visita guidata di due ore per scoprire la vita di Andrew Jackson e per esplorare la sua tenuta (interno ed esterno).
Tutto ben fatto e molto interessante.

We came to see the gardens and take the wagon ride to learn about slavery there. Museum & video about Jackson were excellent as was the wagon tour. It could have been longer but she was trying to finish before the rain came. Gardens were not what we anticipated & were disappointed . We did not tour the house only because we’d already toured several houses & didn’t want to see another one! The movie did a great job of presenting the real man who loved his country even if he bought over 100 slaves & was responsible for forcing the Cherokee to leave & go to Oklahoma without any remorse! He was a very interesting man especially marrying Rachel who already had a husband in KY!

The tour itself of the home is very informative and takes around 35-40 minutes. In early October they were putting in cement walkways and so the original cabin was closed (discovered only after we had walked all the way out there). There is an enclosed separate museum which has some timeline information which is very interesting and a film to watch. They will transport you from this initial venue via gold cart to the mansion tour via golf cart if you need it. There are two stories to the mansion.

I have been a senior member since 2009, and have made several donations to the Hermitage. I enjoyed the Hermitage in the past, but this visit makes me not want to donate to them again. I have not been since before covid and did not know that the mansion tour was not part of the admission unless you tell them at the ticket booth. I brought my daughter and her husband that had never been before. When I bring guest, I always buy the wagon tour. I paid $45 just to hear the wagon driver tell us how bad a person Andrew Jackson was and how much she hated him. My daughter’s comment after the tour was “that was depressing.” Also, the garden and grounds were very neglected. I was so disappointed in this visit.

We are beyond thankful for your membership and contributions that you have made over the years and sincerely apologize that this visit did not meet the excellent expectations that we strive to achieve for person who comes to our site. Feedback is what allows us to improve, and we are grateful for the time you took to provide yours to us.
Since COVID, we have added several different ticket options to what is offered, including our Grounds Pass, which includes access to the entire property, museum, film, audio tour and more. Your membership comes with a Mansion Tour and is what you should have been offered. Discussing a topic like the enslaved community, which is addressed on our wagon tour, is not an easy task and is not one we take lightly. However, we strive to provide the facts and let each visitor form their own opinion and are sorry that was not the case with your experience. Finally, if your visit was more recent, we can say our garden crew has been hard at work removing weeds and getting the beds winter ready. Because the garden is seasonal, the plants and flowers look their best in the spring and summer—and this past summer, it really did look magnificent.
We have alerted all applicable leaders who can address the issues you had with staff and hope you will return for a visit again in the near future and allow us to strive to provide a better experience.

It was great to see a lot of original pieces and buildings for this era on one piece of property. A lot of walking outside as the property is huge.

Interesting tour, learned a lot about President Jackson and the Battle of New Orleans war of 1812. The gardens outside the Hermitage could use some attention, they looked unkempt.

Could someone fill me in on the main difference between the “Generals tour” supposed to be the base tour and the “VIP tour”. Traveling with wife and two children (13 and 15yo).

Hello,
My sons (mid-20's) and I visited The Hermitage in early-August. It was my second visit, having been there a decade ago.
The General's Tour includes admission to the grounds, a perfectly nice interpreter-led tour of the mansion, and a self-guided (with audio) tour of the rest of the grounds and buildings, including the President's burial site.
The VIP Tour also includes admission to the grounds and a guided-tour of the mansion, but it adds access to the beautiful veranda (balcony) for a wonderful view of the property from the front of the mansion). The tour guide also takes you around the rest of the grounds and buildings, rather than you doing it yourself.
We did the General's Tour. We were pleased with the interpreter-led tour of the mansion and we were satisfied doing our own thing walking the grounds and seeing the other buildings on the property. But, man, oh man, was I jealous of the people that were allowed to go out onto the veranda. Had I looked at the differences between packages a little bit more closely ahead of time, I might have been willing to pay the extra to walk out onto a 19th-century plantation veranda!
Do be sure to purchase tickets ahead of time online. The number of people permitted on each tour is limited during these COVID times, so you do not want to get shut out by showing up and hoping for the best, but finding out that all of the tours have already sold out.

Yes it does. The museum at the start is easily navigable. There is a relatively short walk to the house itself that should be possible however there are steps up to the house and there are steep stairway to reach the upper floor that may be more difficult. I do not believe there is a lift in the house. so the upper floor of the house may be too much.

The guided tour is of the mansion only. There are audio devices provided for self guided tours. You can tour the property, gardens and museum. You will be able to see one slave home .

We are heading to Nashville and plan on Visiting Andrew Jackson's Hermitage either Sunday, May 26 or Memorial Day on May 27. Is the museum open on Memorial Day? If so, is either Day preferred? Do you recommend purchasing tickets in advance or purchasing at the door is okay? My husband is a big history buff and we look forward to visiting the Hermitage! Thank you for any feedback!

Are leashes dogs allowed on the grounds? So one of our party could hold them while the others toured the home. Then tour the grounds together.

Everyone is correct. No dogs allowed however my friends and I also toured the Belle Meade plantation (which was amazing) and dogs are allowed there!

Can you purchase the wagon tour tickets online in advance with your advanced entry tickets? I don't see where you can add them on.

I think you buy the basic tickets on line, and you add the wagon for $12 when you arrive. I'm guessing that's because the staff can't guarantee the weather in advance. The web page about the Wagon Tour advises that the wagons operate "from March to October, weather permitting."

Presidents tour also includes a horse drawn carriage ride of the entire property that is narrated and provides additional details that make the visit that much more worth it. You will not be disappointed
