Incredible collection of Spainish masters, neither of us are fans of Abstract art, but we found it interesting and learned much about the historical perspective.

Great museum, two stories with four different areas of art. They have a Picasso, and a Salvador Dali.

Well, if you're very into obscure Spanish art or possibly religious artifacts (a whole room I'd call 'heroic Christianity - or 'how do you prefer your rapture'), then maybe this will leave you impressed. Otherwise, it's a haphazard pastiche in a space that could display something much more satisfying. Fortunately I happened by on a Thursday evening when it free - indeed a little later than I wanted to, fearing I might not have enough time to really enjoy the collection. I need not have; you can breeze through this pretty quickly even if consciously forcing yourself to be thorough. And the guards - in this case, they make that known - are both omnipresent and needlessly remonstrative. I felt bad for the several people who suffered generally pointless admonitions.

A MUST VISIT Museum. Combined with some of the other museums this makes Dallas a MUST visit for any art lover.
Some museums have wide collections but are fairly shallow in what they have. Meadows is the exact opposite. It has a couple “narrow” collections - Spanish and SouthWestern - but both are deep and extensive.
The Spanish exhibition rivals some of the mid-size collections of Spanish artist found in the European Museum. Have traveled in Europe, Meadow’s collection should be compared to the Prado’s - it is that amazing. Let me give just one example. In the collection are SEVEN El Greco’s including his last portrait. The 7 are well chosen and curated. Somebody in the US wanting to begin an initial in person study of El Greco’s works, who could not travel to Spain, could start here without any problem. And this is just one example out of many.
This collection is a MUST see.
Strongly encouraged to see is the museum’s SouthWestern collection. Extensive and well curated. One of the best regional representations I have seen in any museum across the world.

The very structure of the museum is unbelievably beautiful and very well maintained. The paintings and sculptures are incredible and in the museum shop there are some embossed cards made by Korean women that they must buy, are so spectacular

The museum is located on the campus of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. There is a parking garage and, if you take your parking ticket with you, they will validate the parking when you pay your admission. There is a sculpture garden outside which can be visited without charge. Admission to the museum is paid on the first floor. I paid $6 admission for the museum. The staff was friendly and helpful. There is some art and the gift shop on the first floor. Most of the art exhibits are on the second floor.

Went for the Goya exhibit, it was good with some very famous pieces on loan from a British collection. But there are many other Spanish works in the permanent collection. Sarollo, Degas, a few Dali’s and Picasso pieces. Your regular collection of spooky old Medieval church art, but some nice impressionist and modern pieces from many places worth a visit if you are in Dallas.

This place is such a great treasure! It is the largest private collection of Spanish artwork outside of Spain and most medium sized American cities would kill to have a collection this great! If you are in the area and have the time, go and see it.

The latest special exhibit "Highlights from The Bowes Museum: El Greco, Goya, and a Taste for Spain" at the Meadows Museum is small with only 11 works, but that does not mean they are not impressive. The paintings are huge, but just as fascinating is the information about The Bowes Museum in England and John and Joséphine Bowes' collecting and collection in the Barnard Castle.
The "Goya's Visions in Ink" is in a separate part of the museum, but also on the second floor.
As wonderful as the exhibit is, for me the normal admission price for these few paintings is too steep.
Tip: go after 5 pm on Thursdays for free parking and free admission.

Thank you for your review, we hope you'll return, not only for special exhibitions but also to view the permanent collection, which contains masterpieces by Velázquez, Picasso, Dalí, and much more. (And enjoy free parking for museum visitors any time, not just on Thursdays!)
