These old homes are not all in perfect condition, but many are. Regardless, the sheer size of them should indicate how much wealth there was in the early oil boom days here. View these as you go through the tree sculpture tour.

worth doing whether walking or driving to see all the Beautiful victorian homes on display! truly a fun thing for history buffs!

We did a slow drive through this very historic collection of homes. The area was bounded by Market St and Broadway between 9th and 19th St.
For the most part the homes were in good condition with some under renovation. Interspersed were a couple of run down homes. We noticed that the corner lots tended to have the largest homes that were almost double in size of the standard ones.
Historical markers were posted and gave details on certain houses while others had tree sculptures which were transformed from hurricane Ike collateral damage into birds, dogs and other wooden sculptures. A map from the Galveston Visitor Center provided a comprehensive summary for all homes and was a helpful orientation.

Although we set out to do a walking tour of the Tree Sculptures, we got the added bonus of viewing the historic 19th and 20th homes in the East End. Several of the homes have plaques outside with information on the original owners and their contributions to the early business and culture of Galveston. How lucky we are that these homes have been renovated and preserved.

Excellent historical neighborhood to stroll around. Majestic houses, many that survived the 1900 Hurricane. Such beautiful stately homes... many are Victorians painted in multiple colors. There are tours available, but we enjoyed just walking around ourselves block after block. Highly recommended!

My wife and I enjoy seeing unusual, historic, quaint, or beautiful old houses. The East End Historic District of Galveston does not disappoint. Lots and lots of old houses. Just when you think you saw them all, you see some more. If it was a nice day, it might be a pleasant walk just exploring this neighborhood, but it encompasses quite a few blocks. We did a driving tour on our own. I sometimes wonder if the residents ever get tired of all the gawkers or take pride in living there. Either way, it was a quiet day we were there, a late Friday morning. Not a lot of other cars at the time. Definitely check out this if you like old or unusual houses.

Preciosa avenida con casonas antiguas en muy buen estado que dan una idea de como fue en su esplendor. Es bastante larga, recomiendo hacerlo en auto camino a la playa, vale totalmente la pena

One comes here to view the classic old architecture, the big houses that have survived. Thus you might want to find a walking tour with a guide who can tell you some history. But just fund to see the houses.

We did a bus tour since it was raining. The houses and buildings are stunning. Especially the ones with the survivor plaque. We saw the Bishops Palace, Moody Mansion, the first church, and tons of beautiful houses. This was one of the big highlights of our trip.

Amazing older homes, most have been well cared for and are in impressive condition on the outside, at least. Some need substantial work, but you can still appreciate the original beauty and grandeur... And what life might have been like when the area was in it's heyday.
The tree sculptures add a nice touch of whimsy... Especially those decorated for winter or Mardi Gras.
