We walked downtown Georgetown, its such a nice area, so many different stores, ice cream shop. While walking you can take a picture with three leg Willie, kids thought it was funny. Very nice area definitely worth it, easy free street parking. Historical plaques to read too.

We have gone to the downtown area of Georgetown, Texas several times since moving here in 2007. It has a wonderful atmosphere and lots of entertaining events.

This is a great story and a nice statue to take pictures by. Parking is easy on the Georgetown square and the stature is very life-like.
Have a great time with 3 legged Willie!

Love looking at any statues or old buildings in the Georgetown area. This one is right on a sidewalk so seeing it up close was easy.

Arthritis fused Robert Williamson's lower right leg at a 90 degree angle. Doctors at the time (1819) attached a peg leg to his bent knee. "Three-Legged Willie" later became a Texas power broker; Williamson County was named for him (although he never visited) and in 2013 a life-size three-legged bronze statue was unveiled across from the county courthouse.

The first quirky thing we happened upon when visiting the downtown. Just outside the little museum, worth a stop.

We are not talking about a just a statue. The statue represents an amazing man. Robert McAlpin Williamson. Why three legs? When he was thirteen he contracted tuberculosis arthritis which caused his right leg to stiffen at a 90 degree angle. To be able to walk he had a peg leg attached. (Note: amputation in 1817 many times proved fatal.)
He passed the bar at the age of 19. In spite of his deformity he was an accomplished horseman and was made a Major in the Texas Rangers. In 1835 he was in two major battles during the Texas Revolution.
The history (much more) of this man is amazing. That is the reason Williamson county was named after him.
There is a museum at the location (free) and it would be well worth your time to go there.
