This place did not have as many birds as a lot of the others. We know timing is everything. There were several Kiskadees here. The grounds were surrounding the remnants of some Rio Grande water that used to flow through this area. It is our understanding the river has changed its course in recent times. The pumphouse was interesting for a quick look. You can see the large stack that used to spew the steam and the large wheels that powered the engines. There is also a video to watch to better understand the operations of this pumphouse.

We hiked around the lake and the grounds. This place had the largest amount of Border Control on it that we had seen. Several trucks and guards set up at two locations.

This place is worth a couple hours of your time just to understand the area better. It was interesting to see the wall, border patrol, border crossing in the distance and the pumphouse. The grounds seemed to be an after thought for us here. There are better places in the region to see birds but it is a free stop so it does not hurt to come see what are on the grounds when you are here.

We quite enjoyed our visit here, as an old steam engineer I probably enjoyed it a little more than my wife. Everything is well preserved and intact and with the self guided tour you can get a good understanding of what went on here. A testament to the ingenuity and fortitude of some of the early settlers, it is a impressive facility for that time period. It is free to enter but there is a $2 charge is you want to watch a video on the history of the pumphouse and it is worth it. The ground are quite nice as well and you can walk along the wall plus there are other trails. Be sure to ask for a map of the trails as they are a little confusing.

An interesting location, nicely landscaped, and part of the Valley's World Birding Center. Worth stopping. Don't forget to walk behind the pump house building to take a view of Mexico.

In these times of Covid it is sad to see these interesting historical venues not get the visitors that help support them. We were some of the only visitors the day we visited. The staff person asked if we wanted to see the 18min film and said it would be $2/person. The film explained the history of the pumphouse which was built for commercial-scale irrigation in 1909, drew water from the Rio Grande and channeled it to thousands of crop-laden acres nearby. The pumphouse, operated first by steam before coal and electricity followed, performed its duties until 1983 when an all-electric pumphouse was installed downstream. Usually there are tours and a trolley but we were given a self-guided map of the site. It was interesting to see the equipment, though overall it was dusty and seemed neglected. The miniature train village was not open. The grounds are nice, trails easy to navigate. It is a world birding site so we brought binoculars and saw Great Kiskadee, black Phoebe, Green Kingfisher. You are right next to the border wall so a good place to see it. The site may be more active during the weekend as it seems to be a popular place for wedding photos as indicated by signs. We enjoyed our visit and hope visitation can get back to normal in the future. Call before you go to make sure it is open.

We walked around and read the talk abouts. Cool old place lots of history in this area. This was a major player in the agriculture of this area. Without it it would have been a different story.

I love the new fence in the rear. Too bad it took so long to get in place.

I'll put a few pics up.

We had a tour of the Old Pumphouse which is a National Landmark. Learning about the pumping of water from the Rio Grande. The private tour is well worth the admission price. Included in the tour is a tremendous railroad display the Rio Grande valley. The layout tells the story of the life and times within the towns of the valley. Displays in the pumphouse tell the story of the people and the power, as the history of the pumphouse unfolds from the early 1900s to 1993. The effects of the hummican and the movement of the channel was very interesting.

Something for everyone. Our recent grounds tour provided a wonderful Green Kingfisher and a pair of Black Phoebes. Birders will know these are fun and colorful birds. The well organized museum tells a story few know of the area.

Water is aprecious commodity in far south Texas. Interesting look at how it was furnished using steam power. Visit the little interpretive center before you walk through. Also a great place to get a close look at the (not on the border) Border Wall, and see how it has cut people off form the local wildlife sanctuary.

We did the walking self-guided tour around the facility. It was interesting yet it isn't living up to its true potential. Not sure if it's due to lack of funding or just general apathy.

There's a model railroad train display that is closed off. It looks as if it hadn't been touched in years. Plastic tarp covers some of it. Random piles of metal parts are around. Not sure if this is to the Pumphouse more of a natural look or just stuff that no one wants to put away.

But I'm very happy this museum exists as I would have never known the extensive efforts needed to bring water irrigation to the fields in the Rio Grande river valley. Glad we stopped. Just wished it was better cared for.
