An interesting location, nicely landscaped, and part of the Valley's World Birding Center. Worth stopping. Don't forget to walk behind the pump house building to take a view of Mexico.

In these times of Covid it is sad to see these interesting historical venues not get the visitors that help support them. We were some of the only visitors the day we visited. The staff person asked if we wanted to see the 18min film and said it would be $2/person. The film explained the history of the pumphouse which was built for commercial-scale irrigation in 1909, drew water from the Rio Grande and channeled it to thousands of crop-laden acres nearby. The pumphouse, operated first by steam before coal and electricity followed, performed its duties until 1983 when an all-electric pumphouse was installed downstream. Usually there are tours and a trolley but we were given a self-guided map of the site. It was interesting to see the equipment, though overall it was dusty and seemed neglected. The miniature train village was not open. The grounds are nice, trails easy to navigate. It is a world birding site so we brought binoculars and saw Great Kiskadee, black Phoebe, Green Kingfisher. You are right next to the border wall so a good place to see it. The site may be more active during the weekend as it seems to be a popular place for wedding photos as indicated by signs. We enjoyed our visit and hope visitation can get back to normal in the future. Call before you go to make sure it is open.

We walked around and read the talk abouts. Cool old place lots of history in this area. This was a major player in the agriculture of this area. Without it it would have been a different story.

I love the new fence in the rear. Too bad it took so long to get in place.

I'll put a few pics up.

We had a tour of the Old Pumphouse which is a National Landmark. Learning about the pumping of water from the Rio Grande. The private tour is well worth the admission price. Included in the tour is a tremendous railroad display the Rio Grande valley. The layout tells the story of the life and times within the towns of the valley. Displays in the pumphouse tell the story of the people and the power, as the history of the pumphouse unfolds from the early 1900s to 1993. The effects of the hummican and the movement of the channel was very interesting.

Something for everyone. Our recent grounds tour provided a wonderful Green Kingfisher and a pair of Black Phoebes. Birders will know these are fun and colorful birds. The well organized museum tells a story few know of the area.

Water is aprecious commodity in far south Texas. Interesting look at how it was furnished using steam power. Visit the little interpretive center before you walk through. Also a great place to get a close look at the (not on the border) Border Wall, and see how it has cut people off form the local wildlife sanctuary.

We did the walking self-guided tour around the facility. It was interesting yet it isn't living up to its true potential. Not sure if it's due to lack of funding or just general apathy.

There's a model railroad train display that is closed off. It looks as if it hadn't been touched in years. Plastic tarp covers some of it. Random piles of metal parts are around. Not sure if this is to the Pumphouse more of a natural look or just stuff that no one wants to put away.

But I'm very happy this museum exists as I would have never known the extensive efforts needed to bring water irrigation to the fields in the Rio Grande river valley. Glad we stopped. Just wished it was better cared for.

My wife and I had this on our list for our week's visit to the Rio Grande Village because it was mentioned on a birding website. Well, OK, nothing wrong, but nothing worth going out of your way for. If you're birding, you'll do better elsewhere. If you have time, and you need an activity, then there's nothing wrong here. A GPS will take you to the place even though you'll wonder where you're going even when you're close. Signage for an entrance isn't the greatest. Receptionist in the museum was very welcoming. Gave us information for a self-guided museum tour and a gentleman described the outside walking. We wanted to be outside, so we went there first. Feeders weren't well maintained; several hummer feeders were in desperate need of cleaning. No feeders were inviting -- if I were a bird. You can walk an unproductive loop trail around the canal where they've built several uncomfortable rest stops. You'll pass portions of the wall, a likely border patrol vehicle, but not much bird life. The trail obviously needs more attention -- discarded pieces of clothing litter one half the trail. The best birding is around the museum itself. We saw some monk parakeets, great Kiskadee, green jays, but very limited. The pumphouse itself is probably was the highlight of our visit, but I'd call the care it receives as average. Don't know what else I could say -- not great; not bad.

I'd hung around the pumphouse as a child growing up in Hidalgo. I was impressed with the changes made since I'd left in 1965....
