The trails were nice but it was difficult to see the birds. Admission is $10 to all the four Houston Audubon bird sanctuaries. The restrooms had running water. There is a parking lot nearby but sort of hidden by some trees.

The sanctuary was not in good shape & there was no water - consequentially, there were no birds. Tons of mosquitos. We were there in early June & it's been exceptionally hot & dry this year, so probably not the fault of Autobon society for the lack of water.

Hadn't been for a long time and came for the start of the big spring migration. We saw quite a few birds, wish I had brought a camera but only had my binoculars.

It's a good idea to bring water. And next door at the Smith Oaks Sanctuary they have really nice new restrooms!

The second time we traveled for spring migration. I don't know if we saw as many birds as the first time but we still saw lots of birds. They have some new boardwalks that are very nice. The drips are a good area in the late afternoon. The mosquitos were an issue for me but that is to be expected with all the water and warm weather. The yard across the street (think it is called the back yard) is also a good place for migrating birds.

I went to High Island for spring migration this year and although it was very slow when I was there, I enjoyed the woods a lot. The bleachers at the beginning of the trails is a watch the drip for thirsty warblers. I also appreciated the vendor areas set up during spring migration. Bring bug spray and enjoy the chase!

We visited twice, 6 days apart, and were able to see a fantastic number of bird species as they made landfall after migrating across the Gulf of Mexico. The various paths are well-signed and easy to follow, boardwalks keep the habitat from being destroyed where the land is damp or low and where benches allow those who want or need to sit to do so.
The drip area with two small ponds draws many birds and there are two wooden bleachers so one can sit for long spells quietly observing the various birds. There are also well-maintained toilet facilities. Parking can be crowded and overspill is onto the road verges. Volunteer staff are helpful and a white board lists the latest sightings.

We came to the woods for 6 days in a row and loved it, we bought patches for $30 and got our money's worth. We arrived in the early evening and had a walk around, and saw nothing. We were a bit concerned for the next day, but it would not put us off. We met a lovely lady who told us the next day would be better (not sure of her name, but she was volunteering and had cycled from London to Edinburgh). We birded for the next 5 days, sitting at the grandstand watching the drip and walking through the woods, we had good views of warblers and thrushes among other birds, but also found the birding good just outside the woods across the street. We also visited the other sites and enjoyed the coffee at the coffee hut. We feel fortunate to have been at the woods on Saturday when Tropical Birding were celebrating an anniversary of being at High Island. It was great to hear people talking passionately about the woods and how it had changed over time.

But it's worth it if you love to see birds that are unusual in your area of the country. In the spring when migratory birds fight their way across the Gulf, they arrive at High Island, exhausted, ready to rest and refresh. During that time, they are very cooperative in sitting for birders to look at them. Slather on the DEET and go. It is well worth it. Birds in amazing numbers and varieties. Warblers, vireo, grosbeaks, hummingbirds, and more. Accessible, great volunteers, and easy to get around. This pretty much applies to both sanctuaries that are very close together.

One of the Houston Audubon protected areas, here you can also pay your $8 which gain you access to all the Audubon areas where you can bird. Some books and T-Shirts for sale as well as information about the day’s sightings. Good trails and some boardwalks. Many warblers, tanagers etc. were found high on the trees so you need to locate those areas where you can see high up on the trees. Worth visiting and taking time looking in the vegetation for birds.

Boy Scouts Woods has a very short window of excellence; however, It's world renowned for those three weeks. This sanctuary is located in the tiny town called High Island. It's called that because it sits on a column of underground salt with a thick caprock on top. The result is to push the tree covered town 30 feet higher into the air than everything else on the coast. As migrating birds cross the Gulf of Mexico, this is a focal point they can see. As they approach the coast, they land on the high ground. When they do they find a heavily wooded area full of mosquitoes, bugs, nuts, berries and other food to replenish their reserves for the next leg of their migration.

Migration on the coast is most active between April 10-25. You can find early arrivals before that date as well as stragglers at the end of the month. Houston Audubon has purchased three different tracts of land in High Island. Boy Scouts Woods is one of them. They have taken the time to carve out paths through the trees, marsh and grassy areas. Boardwalks have been installed in some places. Drip ponds with seating to view the birds have been built. All of this allows you access to the different environments to see the birds up close.

Forty-five weeks of the year, there is no reason to visit this place. There is a good chance it's locked up with no way to enter. When migration starts people begin visiting this place in droves to have a chance to see warblers, grosbeaks, buntings, orioles and dozens of other colorful beautiful birds. Rare birds are difficult to find, but the chances of finding them here increase slightly.

If you visit Boy Scouts Wood, come prepared. The birds are here because of the mosquitoes and bugs. You will need bug spray. Birds can and do fly right over High Island if they have the reserves to keep flying north. If it's raining or windy, the birds cannot land over the water. They have to keep flying or die. When they hit the coast during rain and wind they often stop here. If heavy rains fall during migration, then head to the sanctuary to see birds that are so tired they just sit on branches without moving. The woods fill with birds after a heavy downpour. Rain is your friend in this case, so bring rain gear.

They have a working restroom on sight. A large whiteboard has been installed on the exterior of the building where they write great finds from the last several days. Past the restroom are two structures that house volunteers that run the place. It costs $8 a day to visit all three sanctuaries in High Island. You can pay $30 for a stitched patch in lieu of a daily pass. The patch gets you into the all the sanctuaries all year long. Volunteers are selling books, shirts, guides and other items in the covered structures.
