My mom and I went on the Black History Tour at the Heritage Society. It was a great way to be educated about a part of Houston's past that is so rarely discussed. The tour is around 45 minutes and our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. Wear a pair of good walking shoes. If you visit in the summer and don't want to be overly heated, make an appointment at an early time when it's not so hot.

Absolutely wonderful place to slow down and learn a little about Houston history. My adult daughter and I visited while my husband was in town on business. We both enjoyed the current art exhibit by Carolyn Marks Johnson - Woman: Spirit of the Universe in which the artist represented several prominent women in history through the bronze collars they wore. The 3 buildings we chose were Kellum-Noble house, Pillot house and St. John's Church. Our guide Kian was terrific. He had a great understanding of the history and spent about 20 minutes in each building which was just enough. Enjoyed chatting posting with him about history and preservation. Highly recommend visiting to learn a different side of history...it's more than dates and events.

We came by during Memorial Day weekend but it was closed. We walked around the locked fence and then over to Sam Houston Park where we’re got a little closer to those historic buildings.

At least a sign was posted in front of each building to help identify it and if you call the 713 number posted then you’ll get a free audio tour that made up for the lack of guides.

It’s not the 5 bucks charge to see what amounts to a large room filled with old costumes and props from the Allen Theater and the remains of an old General store. It’s the pretense to be a Historical Society Museum which lacks any history. Sad situation, especially if you are a history enthusiast. Cute large bird (see pix) greets you upon entrance and they hurry to assure you that it’s made with recycled components only. As if it has anything to do with history. There is a statue of John Connally, the Governor who was in the car with Kennedy when he got shot, maybe it's his town. The only interesting item is a large wood cabin in the back, which claims to be the oldest standing structure in the State of Texas, but you can see it coming from the street without paying the admission to the Museum. Skip it.

My husband and I visited here over Thanksgiving weekend to check out their collection of historical buildings and museum gallery. The tour included 3 buildings of our choice, which were the 1847 Kellum-Noble House, the 1850 Nichols-Rice-Cherry House, and the 1905 Staiti House. While all were interesting, our clear favorite was the second house, with its high ceilings, beautiful wood trim, and elegant furnishings throughout. Our informative tour was led by Cian, who spent about 25 minutes in each building—just about the right amount of time. Checking out their gallery of Texas history artifacts took another 15 minutes; it contains a very large, well-stocked general store. There is no café here, but picnic tables are available. They offer free onsite parking on their grounds, and admission was free for us through our NARM membership.

We did the tour here that took 1.5 hours. It was good, the guide was friendly and knowledgeable. The only issue for us was that we thought it could have been done in an hour maximum .

Was in town for a conference and staying at a downtown hotel. This was a nice walk. For $10 fee was able to tour 3 historic homes inside and out.

Seeing some posts about 3 homes to visit in a tour.
Remember that less is more. You will remember more detail than whizzing thru 10 homes.
There is a mobile phone audio tour that tells you about the homes history as you view the exteriors. This is interesting and free (if you are on free mobile data).

The park is fantastic, shady and tranquil and it is steps away from major freeways, the huge economy of Houston.
Note that the Heritage Society parking lot is free if you are visiting the collection.
This is a huge money saver and convenience to you visit. This is a surface lot and NOT the garage in the same area.

There is also the Ideson Library nearby (easy walk) if you'd like to see another fantastic Houston jewel...its free and ve sure to go up to 3td floor and look up!

I love historic places and there are some great houses here. It was $12-15 for a tour which is the ONLY way to get in the buildings. The history museum (1 large room) is included or you can see only it for $5. We had to wait 45 min. for a tour. We had come early thinking we could go into the houses not on our tour, but found you can only go in 3 of them (wish the entry person had explained we were to pick the houses as we could have done that while waiting, but didn't know until tour guide told us and then we chose quickly). The tour guide was very knowledgeable, but we only went in a few rooms in the houses, and none upstairs. We felt disappointed and that the tour was too much. There were 5 adults in our group. The rooms we did see were well described and artifacts were time appropriate. We traveled over an hour to come here. Also, may I suggest to the tour guide that you let guests sit while you give the 10 minute introduction, especially with older folks in the group, I would only suggest this if you are in the area. We did go through the park and look at the other houses from outside. Yates house was the most interesting to us.
