We always have a great time here, the staff are lovely and welcoming. The cafe and toilet facilities good too. The house has been abit disappointing in the past, the only bad side!

Very disappointed, the first floor of the house was closed off as they were doing work in the gallery. Downstairs was closed. Not much to look at , we had a good look round, read all the information in under 20 minutes!! Still charging full price.

On a very wet Wednesday in the school holidays Beningbrough had plenty of visitors . The gardens were yet to be in their full glory and there was much evidence of on-going building work to do with the creation of the Mediterranean garden . Pretty wet and muddy outside but the restaurant had welcome light refreshments to raise the spirits . The house has newly opened after a considerable refurbishment and we were devastated to hear that the 18th century portraits , on loan from the National Portrait Gallery , have been reclaimed by their 'owners' so the upper floors of the house will be devoted to rolling exhibitions in future . What a shame the pictures have gone ; it was what made the house for me . Otherwise one can only admire the architecture . The house didn't come to the NT furnished so what furniture there is has come from elsewhere . It's still a great place to wander in the gardens and grounds but sadly one of its main attractions is missing .

Awful awful awful, the house feels completely bare! This doesn’t feel like a national trust house :( lovely gardens, which they’re expanding & putting more money into, but the whole upstairs of the house is filled with random modern artwork that has no links to the house. The downstairs is lovely, but where have all the furniture & art gone that’s in keeping with this house? This house on the most part feels like a modern building,

Lovely staff, beautiful cafe but paying £30 for two people wasn’t worth it at all

We picked Beningbrough Hall (National Trust) as a stop-off on our way to Scarborough for a few days. For that purpose it did fine. We started with coffee and scone, as you do, and then set off to wander around the gardens. A fair bit of the garden is being converted to an Italian Garden and so that area and paths nearby are closed off. We seemed to finish our garden walk more quickly than expected and ended up at the door of the house.
The house is not your usual NT. The downstairs is open to wander. The ceilings are unusually high. A previous owner has painted over the original elaborate decoration. Furniture is sparse.
Upstairs rooms are used as a picture gallery.
It seemed a strange combination for the house - it played a lot on its Italian connections. We didn't really get it, it seemed contrived somehow.
Just a personal thought - it served our purpose very well. We enjoyed our visit, especially our scone!

Fabulous place, in keeping with National Trust properties.
Obviously, at this time of year (February) - there is little to enjoy in the way of gardens, the house is superb and the staff and volunteers are always willing to help.
On this occasion we did not seek out refreshments, so we cannot comment on their availability or quality.

Visited Beningbrough Hall, gallery and gardens. Lots of work going on inside and out at this time of year but nevertheless it was great. Gardens lovely in winter sunshine. Great coffee and food from restaurant. A lovely day.

Not for us. After 40 mins of wandering around the house my wife and I came to the same conclusion, looking around a house, with many rooms empty barring black n white pics of the house.
Cafe was expensive but scones really nice as was the coffee. Guess might be OK if you want to take a picnic, we kinda felt short changed.

We visited this National Trust property and it has a lot to offer. A courtyard with a shop and toilets. Extensive gardens with beautiful borders, fruit trees, walkways, arches and grass areas. A wonderful seating area for the cafe. It was very popular and easy to see why. A massive project to rejuvenate a garden area also an enclosed courtyard with an oblong pond. The house just enough of the old to be interesting with an exhibition of black and white photos of Venice and the hall. We particularly liked the balcony over the great hall and that in the past there use to be a walkway linking the two. I was immensely struck by a large photo of servicemen by the front door. Little change in 80 years. If you go ask about the graffiti in the fireplace!! Enjoy we were lucky with a sunny afternoon.

Benningbrough Hall itself lacked the “wow factor” as you entered the hall, with the entrance bare, except for a piece of modern art that looked out of place. To be honest we thought the hall was a bit disappointing, but the walked gardens were very nice and well kept.
Another really big disappointment and something that the National Trust needs to seriously look into is the cafe/restaurant staff and serving. A lack of prices on many items, and accompanying side dishes with items like Macaroni cheese not even offered by the staff. You expect the prices to be a bit more expensive, but the size of some food items such as brownies and cakes were scandalous for the prices paid. My wife was just given a Macaroni cheese with no side dish and after speaking with another customer, they were just given a little bit of cucumber, but no Coleslaw, as they had run out. Yet we were charged the full price for one Macaroni cheese with no side dish. I complained at the counter and demanded a refund of some of the £17 I had paid for a tea, coffee, Macaroni cheese, and Cornish pastie. The lad at the counter spoke with his manager and surprise, surprise, a new dish of Coleslaw suddenly appeared. Along with some cucumber.Another lady returned a small piece of brownie that cost £3.25. and was barely a mouthful. Also complaining the lady was then given a proper size piece in place of the tiny one.
The quality of the food is good, but the portions of many food items are small, and poor for the amount of money charged.
