Who knew that some of the coolest museums we'd ever end up visiting (and we've actually been to quite a few...) would be in Lubbock, Texas? (The others? American Windmill Museum, National Ranching Heritage Center, the Texas Tech Museum, and wish we had time to have seen the Silent Wings Museum...)
Like many reviews, we knew some of Buddy Holly's story (Mostly through Don McLean's song...), but this museum gives the full story about this tragically-short-lived musical genius. It's plenty big for the stories it tells, and the film shown in their theater is great.
Friendly & helpful folks made our visit even nicer and honestly...If you find yourself in Lubbock, TX, please do whatever you can to take in this very-reasonably-priced piece of American musical history!

This was interesting, but I thought it would be bigger and three would be more to see. If you are not there for events of shows, it’s not that great. There are only two galleries of display. There are personal items, and a lot of reading on the timeline presentation. The second gallery is some personal furniture, one room. No photos allowed. They did give a coupon for half off the admission to the glider museum at the airport.

This Center is a gem in Lubbock. Top notch shows in a wonderful atmosphere. Plenty of restrooms, elevators available, and the smaller Cricket theater.

We drove down from Spokane arriving on Saturday, September 7th, having no idea we’d participate in Buddy Holly’s 88th Birthday. What a great time and learning experience. We highly recommend the facilities and staff, as all were well worth the time and money!

Just happened to visit on his birthday, 9/7. Very well done and organized museum. Only wish you could take pictures of his gutters, etc. Statue and Hall of Fame across the street. Street named Cricket.

Mostly like reading a book. Not much to see except a few guitars and glasses plus lots of text you could read online. What about letting people listen to the songs through headphones? Gift store was best part.

Very well done museum that shows the big impact Buddy and the Crickets had on Rock and Roll Music!!

A really cool history lesson at an affordable price. I admit I didnt know much about Buddy Holly but I do now after our visit here. A really great visit with a bonus at the end of the house where some of the songs were written.

We took our 15 yr old Buddy Holly fan here and it was amazing. It was great to see all the original artifacts and the staff were incredibly knowledgeable and helpful.
If you are a fan, this is the place.
You can also visit the cemetery which was simple, but moving. It's a beautiful cemetery. There is also a statue nearby and a walk of fame. Lubbock is a friendly place and it was worth the 5000 mile trip to get here.
We also got to see the original house that was used in Buddy's song writing days.
A very reasonable entry price too.

We were in Lubbock to visit the Buddy Holly Center. I always listened to Buddy Holly as a kid, my Dad was a big fan. He always said that if Buddy Holly hasn't died, that he would be bigger than Elvis. The museum is so well done, I learned so much about Buddy Holly and the origins, early days of rock n roll..I thought I knew a lot, but didn't know as much as I thought. The story of Buddy Holly is bittersweet. A very very young man at the height of his life. Successful, a new husband, about to be a father. He only had an 18 month career, but he accomplished so much ! Paul McCartney says, no Crickets, no Beatles! Across the street is the Buddy Holly statue and Texas, Walk of Fame. We also toured the home of AJ Allison , the Crickets drummer
It's on the premesis. There's also a very good art exhibit and gift shop. We were there most of the day.

I was wondering if you have to buy the tickets online before you go? Now that's covids out, alot of other places are doing it, so I thought I'd ask.

Hi, I went to the Buddy Holly centre last December well before Covid-19. and the procedure we adopted was to email the centre to see if they were open, enquire what times they were open and finally just turned up. Its a very small venue but very friendly unfortunately no photography is permitted. Very nostalgic if your into Buddy and the Crickets as I am. Good luck, ENJOY!! Cheers, Tony.

Travel from the UK is it easy to get to.
How to get there and any hotels etc
Thank you

It’s very easy to get to.
Plenty of parking and a wonderful restaurant just across the street. Regarding hotels: I recommend the Quality Inn a few miles away from the museum.
Best,
Jody

Buddy Holly Center site lists:
"The Day The Music Died
February 3rd marks the anniversary of the tragic plane crash that claimed the lives of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson (The Big Bopper), along with the plane's pilot. The Buddy Holly Center invites the public to this event each year to celebrate the lives and legacies of these young musicians. Admission to the Buddy Holly Center is free on this day."

It took us about 2 hours, but we didn't do any of the tours in the other places.
Skrevet 31. mai 2017
about how long does it take to see and read everything about buddy holly?
Skrevet 13. januar 2015
As other reviewers have said, the exhibit hall is not that big, but is is full of Buddy Holly items. If you read all the information provided, I'd say it's about an hour. I also toured the temporary art exhibit down the hall and walked across the street to see the statue and the walk of fame. Altogether, maybe an hour and a half, with photo ops.
