This rather stark, historical Fort is home to multiple contemporary art exhibits. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Depending on the time of day you come some of the building may be closed (they are not air conditioned). I thought that it was interesting and the walk was serene, although the children were bored.
Purchased a ticket for a set time prior to arriving, but the tickets were good for the next 2 days (nice to know).

An art installation by Donald Judd on an old Army base complete with tumbleweeds, aluminum and concrete cubes, fluorescent light installations and Army architecture. It’s utterly fascinating, as is Donald Judd’s cult of personality. They actually have WWJDD? bumper tickets.

This museum didn’t showcase minimalist art: instead, it just had minimal artwork, period. I love the concept of an open air museum with pieces you can see through windows. But the execution was lacking. There were hardly any art pieces: why didn’t they have some sculptures or more pieces of art in the building? The one building that was open was underwhelming at best. The staff was friendly. We also saw three snakes and got tons of burrs, so I’d recommend close toed shoes if you visit.

Walking 2.5 miles in a field of sticker burrs to see 10-15 concrete boxes is not my idea of art or fun. Terrible is the correct rating. I would definitely not recommend. Total waste of an hour that I’ll never get back.

Bearing in mind that we had had a long day of travelling to get here it was disappointing to find that you have to have a booked tour guide to see the galleries. The alternative offered to us was $15 to do a self-guided tour of the concrete blocks that you could see from the car park.

This is a museum of contemporary art, located at a site that was built as a US Army facility many years ago.
The site consists of four major elements:
A row of about 10 U-shaped barracks buildings which are restored. Most of them have no windows, or the windows are too high to be able to see inside.
A row of workshop buildings parallel to the barracks, but not restored, and mostly empty or with windows too high or dirty to see anything.
Two large Quonset hut type buildings with glass windows, which appeared to be recently constructed. The doors were locked, but there was an installation consisting of rows of steel cubes.
A row of cast concrete structures, grouped into a dozen or 15 clusters stretching over about a half mile.
Most of the buildings were locked or empty, so there was little to see, at least on the self-guided tour. There are guided tours available, though I don’t know much about those.
Admission was $15, or $10 for seniors.
Overall, I would have to say the site was very disappointing, at least the self-guided tour, and certainly not worth the 150 miles out of my way I traveled to get there.

I had a great time walking around the exhibits and snapping photos here. I was on a timeline so I wasn't able to see everything but spent most of the time in the field with the concrete blocks. Very peaceful and thought-invoking.

Minimalist masterpieces in the most amazing setting. Truly 4-dimensional art: the work is an expression of its form, the observers’s place, the natural surrounding, the time of day, and day of year, and some day (one imagines, hopes?) year of century. You’ve likely never seen or thought about light, shadows, angle, form, and placement in relation to “the other” in the same way.

What brings most people to Marfa is the art. This is epicenter of it all. Book your tickets before your trip for the safe, socially distanced outdoor tour to see the amazing works of Donald Judd.

We visited in August, 2020 during the middle of the pandemic. You have to make a reservation online and can only see the outdoor exhibits.
