This lovely island is served in the summer season by daily ferries from Oban, but there are just two days in the week when a day trip by ferry from the mainland is possible. That is not from Oban, but from Kennacraig on the Kintyre peninsula, calling at Islay en route. These day trips are available on Wednesdays and Saturdays only.

The splendid gardens of Colonsay House have for many years been open to the public on Wednesdays, so that day trippers and others can enjoy them, and one Wednesday this summer we caught the ferry from Islay, looking forward to revisiting the gardens.

So having walked over the hill from Scalasaig we were shocked to find that the gardens were closed, and a sign announcing that they were now open only on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

This is so sad. Having for so many years shared their lovely gardens with day visitors, it seems that the Strathconas have now ldecided to exclude us. But why?

The garden wasn't anything special. There were some fine specimens and lots of variety but nothing was labelled so you didn't find out what they were. It wasn't all that well maintained, including overgrown areas and bridges that looked a bit rotten. The cafe was pleasant, as we're the staff, but the baking was very limited and the quality was amateurish. Baked goods with cream on them were uncovered and unrefrigerated on the counter top and there was a large dog in the kitchen area. Customers dogs were welcomed though, which is always nice.

We admired the fabulous rhododendron and woodland garden with many rare trees and shrubs. A great feature is the cafe, with its sunny outdoor terrace serving delicious lunches and afternoon teas.

Cost £3 , which is right as not fantastic huge garden, but pleasant enough and you can spend 1 hr looking around slowly. Only open odd days. Good trees for children to play in and colorful in May. Nice and wild, and not over manicured, without looking neglected. Cafe is at entrance to garden, with great cakes, soup and ice cream. Can easily walk to Kiloran beach from here. Garden has steep slopes and rough ground so not go for disabled.

We visited the gardens and cafe on a sunny but windy day in early May.
The most sheltered place on Colonsay!
The gardens are beautiful, with mature and interesting trees and shrubs, streams and bridges, an ancient carving (moved from elsewhere on the island), lots of good sitting places, and Colonsay House - not open to the public - making an attractive background. The walled gardens are a fascinating blend of their former formality with current projects. The rose garden is not what the name conjures up, rather a collection of shrub roses in grass - much better. I would love to see it in flower.
This is not a manicured garden! It is a relaxed and happy place, with lots of ground elder. Also what I think is a huge patch of naturalised Chilean guava, which must provide enough little strawberry-scented fruits for a whole dynasty of Queen Victorias (it was her favourite fruit), or for the whole island to have with their muesli.
We had lunch at the cafe, sitting on the terrace in the sunshine. Leek, potato and wild garlic soup, bread roll, tea and lemon drizzle cake, all home-made and delicious, and served by a charming young couple.

When on Colonsay you must visit the gardens and see some amazing trees, plants and flowers. Great homely food in the cafe served by two lovely youngsters from Latvia.

We visited Colonsay House Gardens on a beautiful spring afternoon. The cafe set up is very strange, a crammed, messy little space tacked onto the house. We had cake and coffee on the deck before heading into the Gardens.

The cake and coffee was pricey enough and then we had to pay extra to walk around the gardens, which we could see from the deck. The gardens have a wild charm to them but seeing areas of dead plants, was disappointing.

I understand you can rent apartments in the house but it seems strange that visitors to the gardens have no access to the house and no information about the history of the house.

I got the feeling the owners don't really want visitors so they put in minimal effort with the cafe and gardens, while keeping the house off limits. I think the house and gardens could be a really lovely attraction, if some more care and effort was put in.

It may well be, as the advertisements say, that this is one of the greatest collections of rhododenrons and azaleas in the country but the neglect is apparent. We visited at the peak of flowering time but the site is so overgrown that the large specimens are flowering way above one's head and it is impossible to stand back and view them. A little investment would go a long way here but apparently his lordship has other priorities. Incidentally there is allegedly no charge to visit the woodland garden but great care is taken to conceal this fact, and the map you are given does not relate at all to the woodland garden or the collection. The tearoom (it's not a cafe) is housed in a shed with a ramshackle collection of tables and chairs and the lady running it is to be congratulated on producing an excellent cuppa in trying circumstances. Enjoy the walk around the woodland garden by all means but don't be induced to part with a fee to view a neglected formal garden.

It’s not often I actually review places but thought I should write one down! The gardens themselves were gorgeous after paying a £5 entry fee to see the gardens... map is extremely unclear and NOT TO SCALE!! We weren’t even sure where in the gardens we could go due to large private signs being on every gate.... the cafe itself was okay. Not much of a selection for actual food! We had the wild garlic, feta cheese and red pepper tart. Which was nice but the “salad” you get is a joke. A handful of lettuce leaves, some cucumber slices on the side.... that’s it!! Not even a choice of any other sides and seeing as both myself and my daughter don’t eat salad... fair enough to say we were still starving after our food! We tried the cakes. They were nice. The chocolate and “almond” cake had no almonds? Scones were lovely. Not sure I would pay the price we were charged again.. almost £5 for a roll with some ham or cheese on?!?! Won’t be back for the cafe again.... just the gardens if they sort their map out!!
