This was a much better drive to see canyons than Palo Duro. Much better colorful scenery and lots of buffalo and other wildlife.

We spent the day at Caprock Canyon State Park. While the terrain is stark, the red canyon rock layered with stripes of gypsum is impressive.

The ranger staff are very knowledgeable and helpful with directions. We hiked to Fern cave. The ridge trail is pretty tough at the climb but offers the highest views in the park.

We visited the overhang known as Fern Cave. It was a nice spot for a little bouldering and maybe lunch but not very special.

We returned via the North Prong trail. The upper section from the Fern Cave is marked by a series of white poles to help you navigate the trail leading you to a very well maintained trail for the remainder of the hike. The Last Dance hoodoo was easy to spot.

Tips: Much nicer in March than in summer.

The prairie dog section was fun but best observed in the morning before too many people arrive.

The buffalo herb was also by the road when we first entered.

Although very friendly, they do enforce the “No parking on the side of the road”.

We drove a total of three hours round trip to see this park. We were staying in Palo Duro Canyon. It was worth it! We saw the bison herd, chipmunks and deer. Drove though the park and did a couple of hikes. Nice and helpful staff. Put this one on your list!

The free roaming bison are awesome. They don’t seem scared of cars so you can usually see a number pretty close up from your car. We saw over 30 Bison just driving the road way. The scenery is stunning like a western movie with red dirt cliffs.

We have been here a number of times with our kids and hiked some of the trails. On previous visits we saw burrowing owls near the prairie dog town.

Be aware certain times of year I think Nov/Dec the bison are rounded up and penned to check on their health so during this time of year you might see very few or no bison. We can’t in November and only saw 1 at a distance.

We will definitely be back.

This is a fantastic state park to visit. There is wonderful scenery, plenty of trails, and you get to see Bison up close. There is also a section where you can see Prairie Dogs.

Lovely little park, saw a bison almost straight away & another a little later on. Saw cute prairie dogs & a road runner. My only criticism is that the State Parks maps are not that user friendly & it is easy to miss trails due to unclear markings.

This is the location of the Official Texas State Bison Herd Gracing Prairie. Where else can you see bison, prairie dogs, and roadrunners within minutes of entering the park? There are great options for hiking, from easy to challenging, with great vistas of the canyon and it's rock formations. There is camping allowed in the park as well.

Do yourself a favor and hike from the bottom of the canyon to the top, if you can. That's where Caprock's breathtaking beauty lies. i've been 3 times. The first time was about 10 years ago and I didn't know much about camping or hiking so I camped near the lake next to a pretty rowdy group. The star were beautiful that night. I saw bison and walked to the overlook as the sun went down. I also hiked about 30 minutes into the South Prong trail in the morning, and it was cool to see the orange rock layers interspersed with sparkling gypsum, but not a mindblowing hike. This was in early/mid September and it was cool and pleasant at night and very hot even in the morning.

The second time I was more experienced and planned a backpacking trip in late September 2020, hiking to the South Prong campground the first night then hiking to North Prong campground for the second night. I don't really recommend the South Prong campground because it's small and very popular, so there was absolutely no privacy - people's tents were like 5 feet away from each other. But the North Prong Campground was just what I was looking for. There was only one other couple there and it was quiet and maybe a 10-15-minute hike up the Haynes Ridge Overlook for one of the best sunrises of my life! I also caught the sunrise as I was going up the canyon from South to North the morning before. Unreal. I love that whole "Prong" loop. The fern cave is beautiful though it's definitely prettier when the ferns are alive, so maybe don't go out of your way if it's winter or spring. Even in early April the new ferns hadn't yet unfurled. I couldn't hike between noon and sundown at this time of year (last weekend of September). Please be very careful, dress appropriately, don't hike in the middle of the day or early evening, and drink tons of water. I escaped to the visitor's center once just to get some AC.

The third time was this year in early April. We camped at Little Red Tent and I loved having a private mini canyon in our "backyard." It was quiet but we did go on a Monday. It got very cold and windy the first night, down to about 38. The desert is unforgiving! Hiking temps during the day were great, but it did get pretty hot in the afternoon still. We hiked from the North Prong trailhead to the Fern Cave, then to the Haynes Ridge Overlook for sunset (stunning), then came down in the moonlight and went back out the way we came. We also strolled down two other trails during our trip that I would say are interesting but don't hold a candle to the Prong loop: Eagle Point and the Canyon Rim trail.

I have a feeling that most people, like me my first time, stick to the Rim trail or end up on the canyon floor walking around for awhile without much terrain or elevation change in the oppressive heat, or camp by the lake which in my opinion is not the greatest spot. And the RV camping area isn't noteworthy from what I've seen. So that's why I think hiking from the bottom to the top is what makes this a truly worthwhile place to visit, and it's one of my favorites!

Een vrij rustig maar mooi park. Enorme mooie natuur en veel verschillende dieren. Zeker en bezoek waard! Wegens zeer warm jammer genoeg enkel de scenic drive gedaan.

Had a really nice visit to this state park. The bison and prairie dogs were right on the side of the road making them very easy to see. We also saw a roadrunner. There is camping and hiking. And the scenery is absolutely beautiful. The visitors center is closed from noon until one for lunch (restrooms are clean and still open during this time). There is a pay station outside (on the edge of the parking lot) .
