Tripadvisors tilnærming til anmeldelser

This is a real hidden treasure. Definitely worth exploring if you’re into beautiful scenery and petroglyphs. Recommend as a morning outing and allow 2 hours to explore and appreciate the ancient artwork. Signs warn of video monitoring so please don’t even think about defacing this treasure.

This is an out-of-the way trail that is slightly hard to find. It is not a difficult trail, but there is no shade. It was 96 degrees the day we did it (in April), and thankfully we had plenty of water. The hike itself is not that special other than you do feel like you are out in the middle of the desert, which is unusual in and of itself. However, if you walk back into the rocks, there are many petroglyphs and pictographs to search for. It is really cool to see them, and our teenage boys thought that was one of the best things during our visit to Big Bend.

This trail is accessible in Terlinua, without even entering the national park. A small dirt road leads you a open area where you can park your car and walk a few hundred feet to the trail head (fenced area with a small opening). The rocks here are so unusual in color and shape than the rest of the Big Bend area. We went to see the ancient drawings on the rocks but that was not the highlight as you have to look really hard to see them. The sheer size of the rocks along with the close up views of the plants in the area makes this a small hike not to miss. Easy terrain and max one hour needed, drive time down the dirt road plus the hike.

I’ve been to big bend many times and didn’t know about this little gem. It’s a few miles down the road from the lodge. High clearance vehicle needed but didn’t need 4WD. We stumbled upon it and thought why not. Enter the small gate to the park and turn right you will see the trail. Was a very pretty day just make sure to take plenty of water. Indian petroglyphs are very interesting. The huge boulders are amazing. Enjoyed resting under the shade of the boulders. Ok hike for almost anyone very easy until the water fall. It was dry but that section was a bit treacherous. Beautiful area if you need a shorter hike about 2 miles out and 2 back might give this one a try. Take plenty of water.

Don't go there if you even think it's going to rain, in fact, might as well be prepared to be stuck there for the duration.

A very scenic trail close to Terlingua that borders a volcanic ridge with craggy cliffs and huge volcanic boulders that are often filled with myriads of gaseous bubble-holes. There are great views of the Chisos Mountains and quite a few Indian pictographs to photograph. Lots of places to explore and enjoy amidst the huge boulders!

Shorter trail to see some petroglyphs, but the fallen boulders are much more impressive. Make sure you bring water. Apparently usually deserted, I did run across a park ranger doing some surveying.
Getting there can be a bit confusing but follow the most well worn dirt road and stay on it for 2-3 miles and you will easily find it. Indian Head Road is easy to find with any GPS. The dirt road is a bit rough but during dry weather should be accessible by any car. There is a small pedestrian only gate. Ranger confirmed that you do not need a National Park pass, though it is on Big Bend land.

If you are not a regular hiker watch out for these trails that seem easy, but they are very rocky and include going up hill and down hill. Some parts are very narrow. Don't be caught without water.

We loved going over to the Indian Head Trail. No one else was there and we got to climb all over the rocks. You have to go about a mile down the trail before you find the old Indian markings.

A nice hike that takes you back in time. See petroglyph on boulders of beautiful colors. Very little lives there now because of white men, but you can see the creek that provided fresh spring water to live.

It says you can rent motorcycles for an unique experience but what if you already have one, can you use it?

Did anyone see the rocks that were worn into the shape of a bottom because native people had sat in that exact place to grind corn or grains for so many years. I saw two of these during a visit in 2013. We have friends headed that way next week, and I would like to give them some guidance on where to look for this amazing feature. Any guidance would be appreciated. Linda

I was wondering do you need a 4 wheel drive vehicle or high clearance to make it down this road? Also great description I can't wait to check this out!

We did just fine in a Ford Flex which is kind of like a mini van. I suppose you might use caution if you've recently had rain ... not very likely there.
