The St. Elena tour in late December was an adventurous, once in a lifetime, experience. It was a canoe trip on the Rio Grande river through a canyon with towering 1500 feet walls on both sides. It was just us and our guide for most of the stretch. Having lunch on the river shore between the canyon walls was amazing.

A special callout to Crosby, our well traveled guide, who made the trip worthwhile by guiding us incredibly and sharing all the exciting information.

Highlight of our family trip. The guides treated our kids (4,7,9) like VIPs which allowed my husband and I to enjoy a fun and relaxing day on the river. Great guides, solid business operation, and overall outstanding experience!!

We did a day canoe trip on the Rio Grande in Santa Elena Canyon with Eric as our guide. The experience was beautiful, invigorating and enlightening. Eric was a wonderful guide--relaxed, competent, instructive and informative. Highly recommend WILD.

We had a wonderful 3-day trip through Black Gap in April! We really enjoyed the beautiful blue green water of the Rio Grande, awesome landscapes, and the expertise of our guide with the natural and historical information about the canyon. We ate well, slept peacefully, and enjoyed the gracious company of our guide, Eric. Great experience and memories made here in southwest Texas!

Five women went on the Boquillas Canyon canoe and hike trip. We couldn’t have had a better time. Our guides were awesome - low-key and easy to be with. The scenery was spectacular. And just disconnecting for a few days gave us the opportunity to bring it down a notch and laugh and relax and enjoy being with each other. I couldn’t recommend Matt and the trip more.

Hands down must do experience. This is an excellent way to really experience Big Bend and the Rio Grande. The scenery, sunsets, and sunrises are stunning. A bit more private and out the way, we absolutely loved the Mariscal Canyon trip.
We did a 3 day/2 night trip, with our guide Matthew, who candidly, made this trip greater than we could expect. This was the first river trip like this for us, but not our last. From the time we inquired about the trip to the end of the trip, Matthew was genuinely attentive, taking time to get to know us us, and really making us feel welcomed. He was helpful with anything we asked, and it was evident he has a passion for what he does. His love for this really showed.

He was our cook, travel companion, and “River Boat Captain” during this trip and we enjoyed having him guide us through this experience. He prepared some absolutely great dishes that one might not expect when primitive camping, and overall took care of everything necessary to make sure this was a great trip for us.

We were celebrating our 10-year wedding anniversary trip on the first day of the river trip and Matthew helped kick off well. He was very supportive of our not so great canoeing skills (I'm sure he had to laugh at us at some times) and while we started out not knowing how to really navigate or pack our canoe, we feel confident in saying by the end of the trip we are much more capable and knowledgeable.

We would be remiss in not mentioning our concerns with Covid, both as we planned and prepared for the trip, but we can’t say enough about the attention and care Matthew demonstrated to make this a safe journey. From the drive to our launch point, to the dining setup, to the steps taken to ensure everything we might come in contact with had some consideration for cleanliness and safety.

We cannot recommend Matthew and Wild Adventure Outfitters enough, and hopefully we’ll get a chance to do a longer trip on the Rio Grande another time. We communicated with several of the other staff via email and all were easy to work with and very polite. Do yourself a favor and book a river trip.

My wife and I did the 7-day Lower Canyons canoe trip with Wild Adventure Outfitters. It was quite an exceptional journey! Our guide, Matthew was a dependable and experienced guide and ensured that any riskier areas of the river (Class 3 & 4 rapids) were journeyed in the safest way possible by lining up the canoes to get over those areas. He is knowledgeable about the area took extra care to show us hidden gems and make our journey memorable. The plan and itinerary was customized to our needs and preferences (e.g. we wanted to do a couple of canyon hikes during the trip). The food was fantastic. We were well fed and there was a lot of variety across breakfast, lunch and dinner (e.g. Pad Thai, curry, steaks, distinct pasta and stews etc.).

We were impressed with the cleanliness and hygiene standards. Matthew was quite conscientious about COVID and maintained commercial-level food prep safety practices, proper masking and social distancing.

This is definitely a trip for those who love camping, exploring and are flexible to adapt to the outdoors. We had never canoed before or had much river experience but we do have a lot of experience camping and some adventure travel in Colorado and Alaska and felt that paid off. Part of the journey was to learn how to tandem canoe which was challenging at first but after a few days we stopped running into bushes (river cane) and after a couple near misses got the hang of navigating the twists and turns along with a few sporadic rock hazards.

This part of the Rio Grande has a lot to see, high canyon walls, wild cows, turtles, lots of birds, massive boulders seen in canyon hikes, great sunrise and sunset, etc.

If you're seeking a unique wilderness experience, this is a great trip to be remote from civilization for a couple of days while creating memorable moments! Our only regret is we didn't bring moisturizing lotion for our hands. Our fingers were so dry afterward our fingerprints stopped working on all our devices!

Thanks to Matthew, all his unique experience and entertaining stories as well as Wild Adventure Outfitters for an unforgettable trip.

Just spent four days on the river with this outfit. They were superb in everything they did. The guides, Jeff, Kelon, Matt, Sam, Tess and Emily, were fantastic. We had a large group and they accommodated us all so perfectly. The food was fantastic! Definitely highly recommend Wild Adventure Outfitters for your trip. You won't be sorry.

This was the second trip week-long we did with Matthew (and now Cassidy) as our guides. This was a relatively easy trip in canoes through the 75-mile stretch of the Rio Grande known as The Great Unknown in February. Matthew and Cassidy's experience and knowledge of the area is unsurpassed. We made a couple hikes which included an impromptu lesson on the geology of this unique landscape, a visit to the "Hermit's Cave" in Mariscal Canyon, as well as hikes up to ridges where the 360 degree views were breathtaking.

Wild Adventure Outfitters is somewhat of a boutique company that strives to create a customized experience unique to each customer. It's very different than the large river runner establishments that count of drive-up tourists for business.

Highly recommended for anyone / group looking for a more personal, unique paddling experience.
