We were driving back from Brenham and saw the signs for the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site and I had never been so we decided to stop and visit it. This site is where the Texas Declaration of Independence was signed and it served as the capital of the Republic of Texas.

There was plenty of parking and when you arrive there is a Visitors Center, Independence Hall, walking trails, the Star of the Republic Museum, and Barrington Plantation, where the home of Anson Jones.

This is a great place for an introduction to Texas History.

We skipped the reconstructed "Birthplace of Texas," but the museum is very good. Knowing the history, however, our real adventure was outside, where we gathered pecans blown down by a storm the night before. Adventure is where you find it -- and we did.

It has been several years since I last visited the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site and with an open day I decided to visit it. This site is where the Texas Declaration of Independence was signed and it served as the capital of the Republic of Texas. Found at this site is a Visitors Center, Independence Hall, walking trails, the Star of the Republic Museum, and Barrington Plantation, where the home of Anson Jones is located. Persons interested in early Texas history will enjoy visiting this State Historic Site.

Came to visit my daughter in Houston and looked for something to do, with historical value to Texas. The museum was wonderful. The staff friendly and knowledgeable.

This is where the Texas Declaration of Independence was signed and it's first Constitution was hammered out. Narrator told the story of Texas Independence , not only of the events here but other places such as the Alamo; the siege and battle raged as the representatives hammered out their Constitution. The story also tells you why Washington and it's history and why this building. The building is an exact reproduction although it is on the original site.
Park had a beautiful picnic area and some hiking trails

My daughter & I visited in April 2021 with 2 grand-daughters, ages 3 and 5. It was an extremely pleasant day. With little ones who like to run around, there is something for everyone. We walked a bit & listened to the guide who took the group through the beautiful grounds behind the visitors center & told of the drama that is Texas history. We left the group early as the girls were tired of being quiet, but the guide was excellent & I was loving it. The Barrington Living History Farm nearby is very well done and definitely worth a visit, as there is something of interest for kids of all ages. I also strongly recommend the Star of the Republic Museum even if you have children, as the many displays & artifacts bring the history alive. You can go through it as fast or slow as you like. The grounds are immaculate with beautiful trees & wildflowers. Plan for a full day if you have kids as there is a picturesque picnic area with a small playground. We did not bring our lunches, but did enjoy a wonderful late lunch at Bever's Kitchen & Gifts in nearby Chappell Hill. Overall wonderful as you can plan your stay based on the interest of your group.

Being seniors, we usually we go for the freebies at state parks but decided to pay the $$ to see everything in the park. It was definitely worth the money. Our guide around the grounds was exceptional and knew so much about the history of the park and events that transpired there. It made everything we saw come alive. We also enjoyed going out to the farm and the docents there explained everything there so well. Unfortunately, we arrived at the museum at 4. It was nice to go there last because it gave perspective to everything we had seen and heard all day long. (we were told things to look for in the museum from our first guide). Beware, though, if you go late in the afternoon. We arrived at 4 and started on the ground floor. We were informed by loud speaker at 4:45 that the second floor was closing, so we missed it completely. If you go to the museum in the late afternoon, check out the second floor, first.

This is a historic site and a key part of Texas history. The visit got off on the wrong foot when the visitors center opened up 20 minutes late because a staff meeting ran late. Very inconsiderate as they know when the park opens. It shows what they think of the visitors.

The grounds included a walking tour of the site. The building where the signing occurred was not open (in mtg?). There were signs to show what the village was back in the day.

A visit to a farm house from the last Texas Republic was also on the grounds and worth the drive.

Awesome re-enactment. Good for families and history buffs. Very friendly volunteers. My 6 year-old son worked his into brick making. He LOVED it. After being shown what to do, he made brick for at least an hour. We hope to return some day.
