The hike itself to the Shakespeare Arch at Kodachrome Basin State Park takes only 15-20 minutes one -way but getting there from the entrance of the park is 1/2 the challenge as it was all the way unpaved from the junction off the main road. It is relatively all gravel and if you have a vehicle that does not have high clearance, you may need to go slow to avoid the pebbles and rocks along the road.

Our rental car, a Chevy Sonic had been experiencing a rather slow leak in one of the tires; therefore, we were on high alert for not puncturing or damaging any the tire(s) any further. It took us awhile to maneuver through the drive but luckily there are few cars and visitors in comparison to Bryce Canyon & Zion National Parks. We took our time.

At the end of the junction for the Shakespeare Arch hike, there is a small parking lot that can hold around 10 vehicles. There was just only one other vehicle besides ours. It is worth to take a detour and head out to see this hidden arch- it is located above on a cliff and is somewhat hidden in the cliff itself. You need to really focus to see the arch as it is camouflaged within the sandstone walls. The walk is level and you will need to walk through a locked cattle guard gate to get there. Just need to make sure you close it when going in /out the trail.

A unique sight by itself !!

So this is an easy and very rewarding activity to do while at Kodachrome State Park. It's just 1.7 miles round trip and offers great photography at both the arch location but also of Bryce Canyon National Park. Very pretty colors throughout the day with overlook locations along the trail. Very much worth the quick drive out to the trailhead. Bring water.

Located in a corner of Kodachrome Basin State Park, the Shakespeare Arch - Sentinel Trail is reached via an unpaved road (be sure to get a map from the Park Visitor Center). Once there, you’ll encounter a short (1/2 mile up and back) trail to the only natural arch in the Park.

NOTE: Even though the trail is short, it is almost completely exposed, so you should wear a hat and sunscreen. The trail itself is rocky in several areas, so proper shoes are strongly recommended.

As mentioned in the headline, the hike to the viewing area for the arch is not terribly tough and you’ll get an interesting view. If you’re feeling ambitious, you can scramble up the side of the hill next to the arch and continue along behind the arch on the Sentinel Trail, which by contrast is rated strenuous.
