Magnifique

Not being sure of what to expect, we were pleasantly surprised. The interesting geology and the incredible colors was cause for many stops for pictures. Well worth the time to meander down the road

My friend and I were headed to the Paria “ghost town” but we were never able to find it. That didn’t matter because the drive down the dirt road was gorgeous.
We were there on a Saturday and only saw about 4 other cars. The dirt road was pretty good except for a couple sections with some potholes that you had to watch out for. My crossover did just fine.
We loved the drive. There were stunning views of the colorful cliffs. It took us about 60-90 min overall with stopping along the way and eating lunch.

I thought I’d highlight this area and it’s fantastic day use area Paria Beach located in Lee’s Ferry, AZ. You may not realize the beach area is the start of the Grand Canyon as noted by the beach sign. An overnight stay on the beach requires a permit. I stayed on the beach @ 25 years ago before the area was improved. Had a great time camping and fishing. Has improved camping now adjacent to the beach.

So unexpected. So beautiful. Definitely a must do. Well worth the time.
Loved the varied sites. Went all the way to the end. Each bend had a more spectacular view. Walked around the cemetery too. A great way to spend an afternoon.

The short drive on a dirt road was well worth seeing this spectacular view. When dry, a regular passenger car can go all the way to the end. Very peaceful and serene place with brilliant color and some artifacts. Great place to relax.

Stopped here by chance to read the plaque—had no idea we could drive the backroad off 89. It was out of this world beautiful- ever changing scenery as we rounded each corner. Our Prius handled the road fine, in spite of the one pretty steep section. Highly recommend.

Beautiful hike. Bring water shoes. Was muddy in January. Started from Lees ferry end in March. Not muddy but need water shoes.

A very scenic six-mile drive from US89 takes you to a picnic area n the Paria River. The road is in good condition but I would not drive it if it were wet at all because of the clay will become extremely slick.

Some serious washboarding of the road but you don't have to travel too far. The colors of the cliffs are amazing

Can you just drive in a little and look around? I see some notes about permits. We are all seniors and will do a short walk, hike, but not long. Staying in Orderville for 3 days and sounds like a nice sidetrip in conjunction with Pipe Springs NM. thanks, Bob from Florida

If you have 4-wheel drive, you can but if you only have a sedan, I wouldn't try it. Be mindful if you go and make sure rain isn't falling in another area...there are some low points that could fill with water, I think. If you do make it to the river area, it's quite nice. Another good place that's closer to you would be the Coral Sand Dunes State Park area.

Where exactly is the road off hiway 89? When I search for 'Paria River Canyon' on Google Maps, it shows me a road that is 40+ miles off hiway 89. Is that the right road, and it's just not necessary to go all the way to the end to see the colorful rocks? Or am I looking completely in the wrong area? Thanks!
Skrevet 16. april 2018
Ahh, found my answer! Thanks to those who responded! It's the Paria River Valley Road at mile post 31 from Kanab, north of hiway 89. I can't post the website, but google "grand_staircase_escalante/paria" or "US 89 and the Paria Ghost Town" and you'll find more info

Come si chiama la strada sterrata da prendere?
Vedo scritto ovunque che parte dall'89... ma in quale punto preciso?
Grazie

Do you need a 4 wheel vehicle to go here?
Skrevet 10. oktober 2017
Not to go to the Old Paria movie location site, where the colorful layers can be seen in all their glory. The dirt road is easily passable to normal vehicles unless there has been recent rain.
Skrevet 10. oktober 2017
Would love to see the colorful rocks but I'm concerned about the unpaved road. How many miles is the unpaved road to the colorful rocks? How wide is this road-2-lane or 1-lane(I'm not crazy about heights) Doable in a minivan? Thanks.

We attempted the access road from US89. The road is dirt and severely rutted. Less than a mile we gave up. A mile or so to the east and on the opposite side of US89 there is a place to drive down and see beautiful painted canyons. The road is much better.
Skrevet 6. september 2017
How do I get there? How long is the trail to get in to the canyon shown in these pictures? easy or difficult?
Skrevet 19. april 2017
How far in are the rainbow colored rocks?
Day hike?
Where is the trail head?
Skrevet 3. mars 2017
It is a rainy day. Can you see the beauty of the area as just a drive through?
Skrevet 20. september 2016
I agree with the above answers, and of course slot canyons can be dangerous in the rain so be careful!
