Like most of the trails in Vermont this one has a nice surface and great scenery. There are mile markers every 1/2 mile which makes it easy to keep track of where you are at. The grades are easy so the miles go by fairly quickly.

Vermont does a great job maintaining state parks and the rail trail is not an exception. I wish I could have found more information about the trail. There are so many sections, it would have been nice to be able to figure out the features of each. Other trail users were courteous.

The trail is basically flat and tree-lined. The path is safe and the walk is calming. Birds, wildlife visible.

I have ridden the MVRT on three different trips, most recently in July 2019. It is one of the best of many bike paths I have ridden over the years. The scenery is beautiful. The trail passes through farm country, woodlands, and river valley. The trail surface is unpaved, but mostly well-maintained stone dust - watch out for an occasional pothole. I would say a hybrid bike is ideal, but really, it can be comfortably ridden with any but the skinniest-tired bike. (For you bike geeks, at least 700cx28, or 26x1.25 tires).

If you are cycling at a leisurely pace, there aren't a lot of towns along the way to refuel. Enosburg is about the midpoint and has places to eat and a natural foods grocery.

For an overnight, the best place to stay would be St. Albans, VT, accessible easily on I-89 or by Amtrak. Richford is more limited in tourist facilities and attractiveness. If you are so inclined, a nice overnight trip is to ride from St. Albans, cross the border at Richford, and ride another 6 or so miles to Sutton, Quebec. Sutton is a lively tourist town, lots of accommodations and eateries. For road bikers the area around Sutton is loaded with good, though challenging, cycling routes,

Very disappointed with this trail. The first section out of St. Albans is nice until you end up at a big agri chemical silo facility. The air is very dusty, stinky and toxic. There should have been a warning about this facility. The off trail lunch spot only gluten free option besides a pizza is a salad.

The second segment of the trail is eerie. Lots of bee friendly flowers like clover and bee balm along the trail, it's pretty, but it appears big ag pesticide residues may be killing insects, so it's not a place I want to ride. We didn't see one bee! They recently spread a chemical manure mix on the fields, it was quite heavy odor which made breathing difficult. On the way back, the farmer was actually spreading this chemical manure mix in a field along the trail. It's not like normal manure, we live in an Agricultural area that's not factory farming so we never smelled anything like this. The odor was in our hair and clothing as soon as we got off the trail we had to shower and air out our car and bikes. This after taking the precaution to start 2 miles away from the chemical silos.

Very disappointing. We came to VT specifically to ride this trail. We didn't bother to finish it and rather than stay for the 2 weeks to do this and other activities, the presence of big ag, factory farms simply ruined our trip. Tourism isn't compatible with factory farming. This needs to be disclosed because asthmatics may find this a difficult vacation destination. We returned home a week early.

If you want to ride a trail in a similar rural setting and visit quaint rural towns, come to PA, ride the Pine Creek Rail Trail and visit Wellsboro and other small towns in the region. You'll be in a much cleaner and healthier environment!

Water is high and many areas normally accessible without a boat are not. No bugs! Manu nesting birds, make sure you look at the tops of the leafless trees to see huge Osprey nests.

The rail trail is a great place to experience a walk, run or bike ride without having to deal with traffic and noise. Free parking is available at the trail head as well as at spots along the route.
The trail is very smooth and easy to traverse. Road crossings are well marked for safety, and there are mileposts along the route so you can tell how far you've gone. Depending on how far you go, you will see nice Vermont farmland as well as beautiful wooded areas and various wildlife along the route.
This trail is a real gem, we are so glad that we found it and hope to come back again for a longer walk.
If you are in St. Albans you should definitely check out the Missisquoi Valley Rail Trail.

This is a very flat walk/hike. I usually do 3 miles one way (6 round trip). I feel great when completed. View of farm land along the way. Great afternoon when the weather cooperates.

Thoroughly enjoyed a late summer cycle along this well maintained path. The surface is smooth crushed stone and is in good order. There are mileage markers and maps along the way. It is easy cycling so suitable for all age groups. We based ourselves in St.Albans and the trail starts about a mile north from the town center. When you cycle across the trestle bridge at Sheldon Junction you will be interested to know that a derailment on the bridge (and consequent damage to the bridge) caused the closing of the line back in the 1980s.
