The story of this site and its historical inhabitants is mostly contained on 4 + free standing text exhibits arranged in a circle in a grassy field. The exhibits are faded to the point that some of the writing was illegible. The tomb area was just as represented. Some interesting history here, but this site has not been maintained and allowed to run down. Unless you're into the specific history surrounding the man and the land, I'd skip making a visit here.

There is not much to see, but reading the story of Bacon's Rebellion was interesting representing a bit of American history that is not well known. If you are a history buff and in the area, reading the story on line before visiting makes it worth a quick stop.

If you are in the area, it's worth a look, otherwise not much to see. The setting is beautiful, however the cornerstone signs are difficult to read and definitely need to be replaced. I do love historical sites, so I did enjoy it.

We were on vacation on the Eastern Shore and decided to stop by Custis Tomb. My children wasn’t interested in it but it was a beautiful view.

The Custis tombs and plantation are a 12 minute drive off of Route 13. Nice farm country and pretty scenery, all the way to the beautiful waterfront location. This trip is only worth it if you do a little reading on Bacon's Rebellion of 1676, the precursor to both the American Revolution and the Civil war. Very humbling to stand on the ground where Accomack Indians once ruled but were displaced by the British immigrants of the early 1600s who were barely out of medieval times...these were the forebears of George Washington and Robert E. Lee's families. The tombs of John Custis II and IV are in surprisingly good condition in a scenic setting near the water. Too bad the signage is in such poor repair, albeit legible. Most highly recommended.

The ride through the farmlands to the Custis tomb is long and beautiful. The tomb is located north of Cape Charles, VA on the Eastern Shore. There is a small sign on the main road saying "Custis Tomb." It is a meaningful opportunity to recall our nation's history. John Custis' son Daniel was the first husband of Martha Washington. This is a peaceful location beside the Chesapeake that we enjoyed visiting.

We saw a sign for the John Custis’ Tomb so we took the drive and came upon the old homestead property. All the signage is in disrepair but it’s still worth the time to go and read how we mistreated both the Native Americans and the African Slaves in this part of the country. I’m glad that they have the tribute marked and saved but I wish they would upgrade the placards.

We stopped on the way back from a driving tour of Virginia's Eastern Shore. Being from Arlington, we thought it would be fun to see its namesake.

It was definitely worth a stop but you do need to use your imagination and not have high expectations. The tombs are a short walk from the parking lot. The house is gone but there were a series of informative signs telling about the area and its significance.

Be warned: the drive from the main road takes longer than you will spend seeing everything.

If you are loving American history, make a stop here. It wasn't far off Route 113 on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Tomb of Martha Washington's first husband. Amazing to imagine where they lived. Corner points of the house are marked off. Small gravel parking lot. No one around. When we were leaving, another Florida car came in the lot. A lot more people look for historical places that are not as famous, just like we do.

The John Custis "Tomb" is actually the burial site of both John Custis II (d. 1695) and
John Custis IV (d. 1749). This is a National Historic Landmark.

You turn in at the sign and park on a grassy area. Then, you should walk toward the next house on the road, but via a grass-cut path. There, within a low brick walled area, are the two "tombs." The Custis family is probably best remembered for two Custis women and their famous spouses, George Washington and Robert E. Lee.

Out in a field are four historical markers put up by the Arlington Foundation, Inc. They are in terrible shape and not really legible. It's a waste for them to be there.
