It won’t take long to see the entire park, but it’s a historically significant location that’s worth a visit regardless. There are no remaining fort remnants, but the earthworks are very well maintained, and provide a great visual representation as to how the site was used for strategic defense. There are about a dozen display signs along the 1/4 mile walkway, covering Native American history, Revolutionary war, and Civil War action at this location. There are a few benches and picnic tables, and while there are no playgrounds, it’s a great place to take the kids for a short walk or game of tag.

I get excited when I see Virginia Trail signs. I love to walk and see new sights. One day I was dog-walking "my niece" and we decided to adventure a bit. We found the trail and it felt like maybe a quarter of a mile long. Bamboo forest, nicely manicured grass, hills (battlements?) and a sign that told you some history of the York River and the battle. Not impressed at all but I'd be lying if I said I hadn't learned something about the history of Gloucester.

I've lived in Gloucester for 13 years and never been to this park. We learned a lot about local history. Many of the signs were hard to read because it looks as if they need cleaned. But otherwise the park is well-maintained. It would be nice if the park had bathrooms.

We drove by on a cold day in December while we were in nearby Yorktown for the Christmas market and boat parade. It looks like we could take the dog and eat on a bench there, but we did not actually check for signs.

Any fan of the revolutionary war must stop here to broaden understanding of the Battle of Yorktown. One of the very few sources for what happened across the "rivah"

If we Americans hear "Yorktown" we think about Cornwallis surrendering and the Revolution being won. But that is only the beginning of the story. We go to Yorktown, we view the cannons, see the Visitor Center and step through the trenches and redoubts. But almost no one goes to where this battle REALLY ended. The surrender of Yorktown happened on 19 October. But as the British marched out of Yorktown, there were still British unsurrendered on this battlefield! They were across the York river at what is now Tyndall's Point Park. The park was named for an early 17th century English navigator and mapmaker, but during the Revolution it was the site of major British fortifications, and Cornwallis' possible escape route! Virginia militia (1500) under the command of General George Weedon and Lieutenant Colonel John Mercer and French Cavalry and fleet Marines (1400) under the command of the Duc de Lauzon and the Duc de Choissey assembled near Gloucester at Ware's Church (which still exists along John Clayton Highway) and then moved south about 9 miles to Seawall's Tavern in Ordinary Town (which still exists on the property of Auto Max in Ordinary). The British positions to the south had become a major source of food to the besieged redcoats in Yorktown. On October 3 the British cavalry set out looking for meat in the form of cattle and sheep along with other food, and forage for their horses. They ran into the French cavalry near a field just to the west of the junction of U,S, Highway 17 and Guinea Road (immediately to the west of Hardees and the Walgreen's Drug store). The French helped to drive the British back, but the latter were intent on renewing the battle when the Virginians suddenly showed up and settled the matter, forcing the redcoats back 2 miles to their own lines. And so the siege was sealed here as well. The surrender ceremonies at Yorktown occurred at midday to 2 pm. The surrender at the British Fortifications at Gloucester Point took place one hour LATER. So this small, unnoticed Park, with Civil War trenches and other works overlaying the Revolutionary defences was truly the place and time that the Yorktown battle ended. Visit the places above to see a part of this epic battle that have been overlooked. Enjoy!
