Steep 2 km climb to the top with the reward of breathtaking views. We took the serpentine 6 km long route down and think that combination is probably the best for most hikers.

Our National Parks need more funding!
The lack of funds leads to understaffing and a neglected appearance.
The Visitor Center building is attractive; however, it is open only in the summer, I believe. The condition of the “pioneer farm” has really been allowed to deteriorate in recent years.
The hike to the top of Humpback Rocks is rather short, but steep(challenging). The western vista at the top is great; however, one must be careful because it is dangerous. (People fall to their deaths here almost every year.)
As others have said, if you go late in the day to watch the sunset, take a flashlight, because the descent is treacherous.
Suggestion: take food and beverages and have a picnic at the top.

This is mostly an uphill trek to the overlook. Best to hike it when dry. Advise parking at the trailhead, not the visitor’s center which is about a quarter mile away. We were a group of two in our early 20s and three in our late 50s. We are all in great shape but it is definitely a challenging hike, both up AND downhill. Recommend walking sticks if you have them. We did not hike late day to watch the sunset, but if you do, be sure to bring flashlights for the walk down. Beautiful view at the top.

We came here in late April - a few days before the Blue Ridge Parkway reached its open season, but we were disappointed by the overall lack of facilities and information to be had here. There was no indoor access to the center, and the bathrooms were still closed for the season. We were able to get an official map from a map stand, and we were also able to use the nearby Humpback Rocks Picnic Area (which itself has closed latrines for the season). For being the first facility at the nothern end of the Parkway, we were expecting more.

Visitor center closed; however, there was a Park Ranger outside, with table set up on the sidewalk with park maps and stamps for park-passport books. He needed a shady spot! It was near 90 deg and he was in full sun. Hot for him and hot for those he was talking to. Restrooms were opened, but needed cleaning. Very damp with wet floors. The short trail to the farm was very interesting. Signs were posted what each structure was about.

We parked at the visitor center (closed and boarded up), walked through the farm (neat-ish though we didn't linger and there wasn't much going on), and then down the road a bit to get to the Humpback Rocks trail (our real goal). We should have just driven around the curve to the trailhead parking lot - will remember that next time. The trail was rigorous for us, after some rain and a year of pandemic couch-zooming. There were rustic benches along the way, which were welcome and much needed for us on a trail that goes up in elevation perhaps more than horizontal distance. In addition to steep inclines, the trail includes climbing over fallen trees, dancing over slick rocks and often choosing between mud pits and steeper rocks nearby. The trail also has deep steps up and down built into the trail to avoid erosion that can be rough on the knees and winding. As you get to the top, the climate changes around you, cooler and windier until you finally reach the payoff - jagged rocks projecting out into open space - the highest elevation around. The view is stunning - if a bit vertigo inducing - and worth the climb. Take your time, hike safely, and be prepared. Take a seat from time to time to enjoy the peace and quiet despite it being a fairly busy trail.

On Sept. 8, 2020 my wife and I visited the parkway. We often visit and always before had great experiences. This day was totally different. The programs at the VC are great, we look forward in particular to the music that is often offered. We tour the nearby area and look to the VC for support when necessary. This day the VC restrooms were closed, there were 4 Portapottys available, 2 at either end of the parking lot, and they were in great and dire need of cleaning. We did not use them. Thank goodness for the restrooms at the nearby picnic area, they were fine. If there was a mechanical reason for the VC restroom closure it could be understood but this information was not made available. So on a busy Labor Day weekend what was provided was totally inadequate and VERY unhealthy. Cleaning was not being done at all. What a shame and what a mis-use of funding. You should be ashamed of yourselves and of the poor quality of services you provided this day.

I can't say anything about the other features at this visit center, but I really enjoyed the hike that we did. We went in the dead of winter and it was super cold, but also just lovely. Would recommend hiking boots in a major way, since it can be slippery, but also there are some big pushes up the mountain. Short, but steep. Great views await you.

This is a wonderful stop with much to do. You can simply explore the exhibits in the visitor center if you're strapped for time. You can take the steep hike to the Humpback Rocks for an incredible view. You can hike over to the reconstructed 1890's farm to see what life was like in this part of Virginia then. Whether you're starting or ending your Blue Ridge Parkway trek, you'll be glad you stopped here.

A grand hike into the top of the Shenandoah mountains where we went just before sunset where we were rewarded with the most amazing views of the mountains and valleys .This hike is a bit rugged and spots and would not be advised for anyone that has trouble walking at elevation or over varied terrain

Is it too steep for a 7 year old? Haven’t been in 19 years

My daughter was 8 years old when we climbed last year. She did fine, much better than me! I was huffing and puffing and had to pause to rest, but she and her older sister practically ran to the top. We had a great time!

Has the mountain lion that attacked the hiker been found? Do you have any recommendations for other hikers as a result? Thanks.

I hiked the rocks for years. Part of my packing list was always a small air horn to discourage wild animals from approaching. As an avid outdoorsman and retired infantry soldier, cats tend to hunt at different times depending on weather and region but mostly times of limited visibility. Know what is in the area where your hiking and prepare accordingly. Don't let a freak accident discourage you from hiking the mountains at all times of the day.

Because the weather looks clear and 44 degrees for Jan. 2, we would like to hike Humpback Rocks. Is this a totally stupid or reckless idea? Thanks for your input.
