This is an outstanding historical site. The prices are reasonable, the tour guides are informative and friendly, and the museum is simply top notch. I can't say enough about all the information, the interesting videos, the "be George Washington" experience, and everything else. I truly learned a lot and had a great time. The grounds are beautiful, although it was a bit cold when we went. We'd love to do the river tour next time. I think next time we'll also pay a bit more for a private tour; they were sold out this time. I also want to give a shout out to the cafeteria, which had several gluten free options. This was a true blessing. The gift shops were also of high quality, especially when compared to other VA historical sites. George Washington truly was an amazing man and our country would not be here without his bravery, modesty, and intelligence. Wonderful tribute.

The grounds pass worked perfectly to get us onto the grounds. There's a lot to see if you're a history buff, and the grounds are lovely, especially the view of the Potomac from the back porch of the mansion. We spent 4 hours, but could have spent most of the day to take in everything. We enjoyed seeing many of the things Ron Chernow described in his biography on George Washington.
Note that the grounds pass admits you to the grounds only. So you will still need to acquire a (free) pass for the basic mansion tour. We arrived at 9 am on a cold morning the day after Thanksgiving and had no one in front of us at the window to get the mansion tour pass. The Enslaved Persons guided tour, however, was sold out. So you'll want to book that in advance. That being said, there is a self-guided version, and all the enslaved persons structures and memorials are accessible without it, as are all the open structures on the grounds.
Another thing you'll want to be sure to consider seeing is the Interpretive Center. We were fortunate to experience Mrs. Washington's personal servant, Ona Judge, talking about her life as an enslaved and escaped person, and answering lots of questions from the audience - all in character. Different characters are in the center at different times. The Blacksmith shed is also interesting if the blacksmith is there working. He's also a wealth of information.

We visited Mt Vernon with family on Nov. 22. We've been there before and always enjoyed our visits but there is room for improvement. First, the guy at the entrance wasn't the friendliest greeter but perhaps he is one of those employees that hates his job. The tour inside the mansion felt rushed, except for the initial room, green, when you walk in. The other guides spoke for a minute or two and then you are told to move forward. Very rushed. Also, disappointing that there was little mention of the slaves who were part of the legacy of Mt Vernon. The stories felt "white washed" and not very interesting in the way they told them. Not worth the $28 admission charge in my opinion. I'm going to look into getting a book on MV to get a better perspective on live and history Mt Vernon since the tour was so disappointing.

For the price, it is completely not worth it. The tour guide was not knowledgeable or enthusiastic about history - which was a huge disappointment to our kids who have been reading about early US history. We just came from Colonial Williamsburg where my kids would engage the folks there in 10-30 minute conversations about history or the time period. So, to have a tour guide not really interested in the content was a bummer. She avoided questions and if someone asked, she didn’t know the answer anyway - basic questions (how did Washington get his wealth? Generational wealth; inheritance; he’s one of the most wealthy presidents in the US. Why is the dining room green? Folks thought it helped with digestion- you see it in Hamilton’s home in NYC and upper class in Williamsburg).
The grounds were nice. The museum would have been nice, but it was unclear what time it closed. The website and map said it closed 30 minutes after the grounds closed, but they told us we had to leave 15 minutes early. Sure, people want to finish work on time, but update your materials.
I appreciate how they are trying to bring in a more balanced history of slavery at the plantation, but more work is needed.

Went here with my husband , son and his wife and 3 children. We had a great time and my grandkids loved it. It's so beautiful and all the people working there explaining it to you are extremely friendly and helpful and afterwards you can ask questions. Well worth it . Plan on spending at least 2 hours there.

We took the metro from Alexandria to Huntington, then a bus from the metro station to Mount Vernon. It’s an easy trip on public transportation. We explored the grounds/farm on our own and took the guided tour of the mansion. It’s worth the time and cost. The tour guides were knowledgeable. I think the guided mansion tour could be better if it was done in the same manner as Monticello, but nevertheless, it is still something everyone should do.
A plus was the lunch cafeteria which was very good and super reasonably priced. With walking around the farm and the mansion tour you will easily spend 4 hours at Mount Vernon.
Being there in person helped me gain a real appreciation for our first president.

This has been on the agenda for years and finally accomplished; and it was worth the wait. A beautiful fall day, midweek. Still very crowded with lots of school groups! The Mansion is a treat in itself, but the grounds are a real education. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and be ready for a few steep climbs — esp if you take the forest trail walk back from the replica slave cabin (there is a shuttle bus that runs in the warmer seasons). The museum is a well designed modern place with lots of video, audio, and immersive "4-D" experiences. And the story of the great man himself is an inspiration in our days of grasping politicians.

Loved our visit to George Washington’s Mount Vernon. The tour of the mansion and grounds is just fascinating. We were there for about 5 hours which felt just about right. You definitely want to save time for the museum and the films they have there. The food court has reasonably priced food that’s surprisingly good. Lastly, if you love a good gift shop like I do, this one doesn’t disappoint. We went to Mount Vernon after a few days seeing the sites in DC. While you can take the bus and metro to MV, it was 2 hours from Silver Spring. We just took an Uber instead. The MV staff was so gracious and they locked our luggage up for us in the gate house. We took an Uber from MV to Reagan Natl Aiport. Order your Uber ahead of time as there wasn’t one close by. There were taxis sitting at the entrance to MV though so that’s an option. Anyway - MV is definitely worth a visit.

Does The 3rd floor has a black hand reaching down on a picture, while white hands are reaching up on the picture?...and why is the third floor is always under construction

Huh?? The 3rd floor is not accessible.
What is the difference between the Standard Mansion tour included with a grounds pass and the “In-Depth Tour?” Is it recommended to do both, or would the standard portion be repeated by the “In Depth” version?
We are planning to do the “In-Depth,” and just want to know if we should also do the standard tour.

Is the second floor closed because of covid? What was allowed to be toured before covid? Will those areas be re-opened?

The second flloot is closed because of COVID. My understanding is that it was previously open and will hopefully open in the future if COVID restrictions are lifted.

How did you book that private tour?

Toronto, Canada27 bidrag
The tour of the mansion is not a private tour; however it is a timed-tour. You will have to purchase tickets from the box-office for a specific time. The earlier you arrive at the site, the better of a chance to get in at a decent time. The rest of the property and museum is "walk trough at your own pace and it is mainly outdoors!" Well worth the walk around as the grave of Washington is part of the walking outside tour.

I see there alot of add-ons available to the general price of admission (slave quarters, audio headset, etc). What exactly is covered in JUST the price of admission? Can we see any of the add-ons without paying extra?
Chris L
Niles, MI788 bidrag
A simple answer is no to having the add-ons included in the general admission price. We did not use any of the add-ons and still found the place quite interesting. There is a lot to be discovered on a self-guided tour. You need to look closely at what the add-ons include and determine if they are worth the extra cost. Our general admission gave us a very nice overview of Mt. Vernon and in all the places there is signage to help you understand what you are looking at.

We will be staying in Arlington with no car in the summer. I am interested in the Mt. Vernon tour but it doesn't seem very easy to get there from Arlington and not very close (almost 20 miles). We will be spending most of our time in DC so is this out of the way. Is the trek worth the visit if we are short on time?

Take the yellow line metro to Huntington Station. Catch metrobus 101 (at shelter E at bus station). Takes you right to Mt Vernon. Easy! Definitely worth seeing.

It wasn’t that good anyway and it was a waste of time and money to do the tour and the boat ride. They rushed you through the house and the guy on the boat read from the book.

How long does the tour of the actual mansion take place? I have tickets for 1:00 for the national treasure tour and just want to know what time to book the mansion tour for.
