We were looking for something that would take us about an hour or two and get us some fresh air and stumbled upon this little gem. Beautiful hike through the woods with lots of bridges and lakes.

This is a well maintained and enjoyable scenic walk. We started at the Mariner's Museum and walked the loop. It was a 5 mile walk and it was just enjoyable. The tree canopy really helped to cut down on the sun to make the walk more enjoyable. I would have no issue walking this trail again and again.

Over several days of my visit, I was able walk the whole trail. There are several entrance to get onto the trail. This walk has some gentle hills but overall an easy hike. It goes along a lake so there are lots of birds to see while walking. Beautiful!

Walked the Noland Trail at the Mariner's Museum in Newport News yesterday (9/10/21). It is a great, well-marked 5 mile trail around Lake Maury. (We actually walked about 6 miles because we went out to each overlook along the trail.) There are options (study the map at the trailhead) for shorter hikes to leave the trail. Tree roots are marked with bright paint and the trail is well maintained. Perfect for all ages though not wheelchair friendly. So nice to have a walking/running trail like this in the City. We felt like we were in a nice shaded forest the whole walk. Highly recommend a walk on the Noland Trail if you are looking for exercise or a fun nature experience.

We were visiting relatives in Newport News, and asked for a nice walking trail, they recommended the Nolan trail. This is a nice shaded trail that winds around a lake, very clean and well marked and maintained. I believe the entire loop is 5 miles, we did a 2 mile course, and did not have to go in and out, which I like. Would do this again for sure! Great for dog walking, jogging, and/or small children. There a few inclines if you choose to take those trails.

Great for a long walk or a challenged 3+. Just be careful of all the railroad ties that are emplaced through the course. Very scenic but dangerous if you are moving quickly. I've been witness to more than a few falls!

Noland Trail is a wonderful 5 mile trail through woods and along several lakes. It is not totally flat, so you get a good workout; however, keep your eyes on the trail because there are a lot of raised roots all along and you can easily fall is not alert. Crowded on the weekends but still nice.

We walked clockwise around the five mile trail on a cool, sunny winter's day. At this time of year there are good lake views through the trees and the winding slightly undulating trail with many high quality bridges is a delight. There is a natural break around three miles at the Lion Bridge and one can walk over to see the impressive James River, where the first settlers sailed by on their way to Jamestown in 1607. The trail was not muddy even after recent heavy rain. It is a wide, well marked and cleared trail with many tree roots.

Is this trail ok to hike after some rain? Or does it get muddy and hard to navigate? Thanks!

How long is the trail? How much time should I allow?
Skrevet 19. august 2019
Of course, if you don’t have time for the whole trail you can just do part and return...we’ll worth it!
Skrevet 19. august 2019
I was by myself on the trail. The trail is about 4 feet wide and very clearly laid out. If you are concerned about very alone, then suggest you start at mid morning or mid afternoon when more hikers are on the trail. Enjoy!

Part of the trail can be accessed with a mobility scooter other parts are more difficult to navigate due to roots and there are steps in some areas

I have never noticed lights on the trail. However, the trail closes at at sunset, so you won't have the opportunity to walk it at night. I think it closes at five this season.
