A fantastic hike which has breathtaking views of both Port de Soller and Palma from the famous ridge as well as wild goats, ancient holm oak woodland and shaded picnic spots on the cliff edge. However, due to recent damage from the February storms, some of the paths have been damaged, particularly towards Deia and you will need a permit to enter areas of the path which go through 'conservation protected areas.' As a solo female traveler, I recommend doing this hike with a tour group and if you start in Valldemossa, you can take advantage of the great bakeries open as early as 7am to get a freshly made sandwich for the picnic.

This is one of the most spectacular hikes in Europe but you need to be mindful of access issues and the truly dire way marking. We have walked this area many times and strongly recommend it but you need to be confident of your ability to search out a route and be happy on some steep, unstable paths. A few years ago a large part of the area above Valldemossa became subject to restricted access. Many of the paths are very good but they can switch from wide, stone paths to narrow, leaf covered routes down very steep slopes with little advance notice. By far the best paths up are through the restricted area.
You need to contact the Montanya de Voltor organisation for access at least 48 hours in advance - but note you can ask them earlier than this. The restricted area is well worth getting a permit. The easiest way is to use WharsApp on +34 619 59 19 85 - you just need to give names and the date you want.
In theory there are routes up to the start of the Cami de Archiduc that stay outside the restricted area but we have found they are badly signed and hard to follow even if you know the area.
Lots of people have already mentioned this is strenuous hiking so I won’t repeat that but in recent years the old signage and paint marking (which was good) has been replaced with sparse and inadequate fancier signs that are restricted to major junctions. Many path names and points of reference such as the colls have been changed so most walking guides are out of date. Some paths are indistinct especially on steep sections. In all cases small cairns will mark the route if it is not clear but you have to pay close attention; if you are unfamiliar with the area and/or the cloud comes down it would be a challenge. We walked down the Cami des Basses this afternoon and there was one sign at the top and one towards the very bottom - the rest was unmarked other than small cairns in the most challenging parts.
For whatever reason the local district seems to want to discourage hikers - poor maps/rubbish way marking etc in stark contrast to most of the rest of Mallorca. Don’t let it stop you as it is worth every bit of effort.

Great hike but bring your GPS as the trail is sometimes hard to spot. Views are all worth the steep up hill trails in the beginning.

Hi,
I am hiking the GR221 from Valldemossa to Deia and then Deia to Soller this August (20-22) and wonder if you can help me:
I have a rental car, do you advice to take the bus from Palma to valldemossa and then start the hike there or drive and leave the car in valldemossa? if I park the car it will stay there till we get to Deia , do you know if we can leave the car in the parking/streets overnight?
also, where can I get the permit for the walk? does it start from the end of carrer de Olivera?
would appreciate any help.

Hi Tina, when we completed the walk we left our car in the car park (close to the information centre) off the main road going into Valdemossa. However, free parking is possible on the residential roads around Carrer de les Oliveres near the start of the walk. Personally I would be happy leaving the car overnight in a suitable place in the residential area, not sure if overnight parking is allowed in the public car park or how much it would cost.
For a permit plus map showing the restricted area, look up Muntanya del Voltor on your web browser (Trip Advisor does not allow web addresses to be added to posts). Once you have found the website, your preferred language (English, German, Catalan, Spanish) can the selected on top right of page. I would recommend taking the path through regulated area (permit required) to Mirador de ses Puntes and on to the Coll de Son Gallard via Talaia Vella. The path drops down to the hermit cave (Cova) and out of restricted access land. Continue along the archduke's bridal path turning off just before you reach the peak of Caragoli. Enjoy the walk, it is a beauty!! Gareth

My fiancé and I want to do this hike but have limited time. We land at 1:15pm and would like to this that same day as I am a sucker for views and it looks amazing. Is this possible November 4th or 5th or will it get dangerously dark to quick? Guessing get there at 2:30pm after renting a car.

It will take you longer than 2:30pm to arrive at Valldemossa from airport. It is a fabulous walk, may not get to the archdukes pass in 2 hours

Any route planner or GPX for this walk available - or a detailed map with the walk?

Hi! is there a shorter loop hike or out and back in the 2-3 hour range that will still give you great views or the ridge on the Archduke Way? Thanks!
