Stopped here for a break and picnic on way to Yorkshire. Absolutely idea to have an hour's break. Free car park just a short walk to castle. Free admission. Lovely views and lots of area and ruins for the kids to let off steam. Clean toilets and basic gift shop. Unfortunately the cafe seems to have permanently closed but we had our own food and drink so no worries.

Interesting history of the castle, when walking around the ruins. Shame the shop was closed, when the internet said it was open. Maybe need to check the timings on Google

Visited in late November 2021, I visited All Saints Church then went up to the castle and then on into town, the Castle is brilliant and has a great history. There is a variety of means to learn snippets of history from information boards to wind-up audio descriptive boxes and also guided tours of the underground part which I sadly didn't have time for.
There was a lovely lady in the gift shop who answered a couple of questions as good as she could have. I think there could be a larger display room / museum space which could expand on the history you can learn at the castle itself.

Well worth doing the dungeon tour if you're at Pontefract Castle. The guide was fab and told us all about how the castle had been adapted and had changed uses from Norman times, through to Tudor times and the Civil War. I also enjoyed learning about its uses after it was demolished including being used to grow liquorice for Dunhill's famous Pontefract cakes. We heard famous names from history books and how they tie in to the castle's past. It was cool to read the grafitti left by those imprisoned in the dungeon & to run my fingers over them and be transported back in time. Only costs £3.15 for adults and £1.55 for children too.

We arrived about an hour before closing time, it wasn't a targeted visit however saw the signs after visiting Xscape.
There is a free car park with plenty of space, at the bottom of the footpath leading up to the castle.
It's quite an urban, built-up environment directly around the castle, and previous authorities haven't respected the surrounding landscape to protect the castle from buildings which aren't in keeping with the history of the area. Even the lamp posts are modern grey steel.
Once inside the gates though this all changes and if you can ignore the buildings from various eras nestled below, you are taken back in time with the many clear signs and information boards, it's clear a lot of investment has gone into providing for tourists to learn about this castle and its ruins. The grounds are well maintained and interesting to browse around. The views stretch very far towards power stations as its on a hill and includes lookout points. Bring your binoculars or zoom lens.
I wanted to visit the cafe and see the park but the staff member waiting at the gate barked at us and other visitors that nothing was open, so we all scurried out. I would visit again though when it wasn't closing time as this was an immersive and educational experience.

Great hidden gem! Plenty for the kids to see and do, the playground is fantastic and the staff in the gift shop were very helpful. Visited in a bank holiday and plenty of free parking spaces and picnic tables. Cafe wasn't open so can't comment. Loos were spotless, as was the baby change. Will definitely visit again.

Great for children - lovely walk around
There is a fantastic playground within the grounds
It’s a good picnic spot
No parking on-site - we had to find on the street parking not far from the castle
Can be chilly as the castle is on higher ground - brings coats

The only fault is that the disabled parking spots at the entrance are not clearly marked, so we did not see them and had to be redirected by a member of staff after going to the back entrance. However this is a fascinating place steeped in history, lovely to walk around and disabled toilets very clean and accesible. Very peaceful and free entry! We would definitely return, excellent for picnics on a nice day

I would like to know whether dogs are welcome and there's anywhere to walk them.

Dogs on leads are welcome in the Castle, however at the moment they are not allowed in the activity center, the shop or the cafe. You can however have a coffee and something to eat if you wish outside the cafe in our seating area and your dog is welcome outside with you. Hope this helps x
