This is a great trail. If we had been there a week later we would have enjoyed the summit trail too. The summit is closed in May and June.

No No No No No

Are all these great reviews a case of The Emperor's New Clothes?
This is a terrible hike. It's more of an endurance test, and at places there is no trail at all, other than the tears of those who tried before you. Up is terrible and down is worse. Rocks, loose gravel, no shade, endless black flies...
Go somewhere else. Seriously. There are some fabulous hikes in Gros Morne Park. This is not one of them.

This is a LONG hike, very rough scrabble up the face of the rock scree but the hardest part is the trip down which takes hours, our hike took approximately 9 hours, go prepared! The views were magnificent!

This is a historical event. Both Lewis & Clark had to make a decision and they didn't know which one to choose: The Marias or the Missouri.

They chose the Missoura, which was the best river of all. That was cool!

They chose the right river: The MIssouri.

Both captains were agreeing each other.

There were lots of information about this and we could see a lot of information about this decision.

A must see!

My wife and I do a lot of hiking (for our age--79) and we found the trail to Gros Morn a challenge. The problem was not the elevation gain but that the trail badly needs work. Many sections were eroded and led over medium size rocks so that every foot placement had to be watched. In other places where steps had been provided the wooden frames had all the rock and gravel filling eroded so that there was no good foot way. I heard that the repair of this trail is high on the list of work to be done by the park.
Having said that, we are glad we made the effort. The views were astounding and we will remember them long after we forget the few aches that accompanied the hike.

As someone who lives a rather sedentary lifestyle (I might power walk for an hour 4x a month), I really hummed and hawed over doing this hike. I had so many reservations and even the night before didn’t think I’d actually do it, but I knew I’d regret it if I didn’t. I started out early because I didn’t know how long it would take me and I did it in 7.5 hrs, 3 to ascend and 4 to descend. I was at the summit for only 10 minutes because I really just wanted to get the challenge over and done with, and stopped numerous times for photos. Lots of older people blew by me, but they were all encouraging and I just kept telling myself “one step at a time”. The descent, when your legs are tired and knees and screaming, is much more challenging than the ascent. The only tricky part of the ascent is the gully, especially near the top, as the rock easily slides out from beneath your feet. The views on the backside of the mountain are stunning. I wore good hiking shoes, but would suggest boots over shoes for the ankle support. I drained my 3L water bladder, but didn’t drain my actual bladder once, so it was a sweaty trek. I used only one trekking pole and am glad I did because it was helpful having a free hand to pull myself up onto rocks. Be prepared with a good first aid kit and sunscreen. If someone like me did this trek, then you can too. With the right gear, remembering it’s not a race, and giving yourself lots of time, you will be successful.

Mount Gros Morne definitely represents a destination climb, a bucket list experience. The Gully up is challenging, the return descent down Ferry Gulch is challenging, but the views are magnificent (even on a cloudy day). We did it! This is not a beginners climb, but all sorts of climbers were on the mountain, including beginners and children. Wear good shoes! Mine were not up to the task, although they are athletic type hiking boots, you really should have proper, good fitting mount climbing boots for this climb. And sticks! I wish we had had climbing/walking sticks. The descent is rocky. My toes were not happy! I slowed us down and we took the full eight hours to complete the climb and return to the parking lot. It was not easy, but we are so happy we did it! It is an exhilarating experience!

We cannot say enough good things about this hike, so here's a quick overview:

The trail is broken into 4 sections:

1) 4km through woods
Difficulty: Not too bad, just a bit of incline

2) 3km up a rocky incline
Difficulty: Pretty tough but manageable :) Ensure you have proper footwear and take your time, it does take awhile and the rocks are loose. Honestly it's scarier to look at than it is to climb.

3) 5km down the mountain
Difficulty: Probably tougher than part 2! You're already pretty beat and it's a decent descent down the backside of the mountain. But guess what? It's downhill and you're riding your climbers high, so whatever.

4) 4km back to the lot
Difficulty: It's the same stretch as part one, just in reverse (and downhill)!

This was the best experience my wife and I had in Gros Morne National Park. We're both in our early 30's and in ok shape, but we are not seasoned hikers and managed just fine. The view from the top is out of this world and when coupled with the sense of accomplishment...it's legit hard to beat. Take lots of water, some snacks for the top and ensure you've got 4-6 hours to burn since she's about 16km total.

Sidenote: we went in July and it was COLD at the top. There's nothing to protect you from the wind, so I'd suggest something other than shorts (yes I had shorts on, no it was not the right decision).

Happy climbing!

Hiking Gros Morne Mountain is strenuous but entirely worth it. Once up on the mountain, the scenery is spectacular.

While this is a challenging hike, it is quite manageable if you are fit and prepared. I was a bit nervous as I usually only hike under 10k and nothing with this kind of elevation, but my fitness level is fairly good. The first 4 k to the base are easy. The climb to the top is quite challenging over the loose rock. But that part is less than 1km and only took about an hour. I was glad for my hiking pole and hiking shoes. The views from the top were spectacular and worth every minute of the hike. We also saw a rock ptarmigan and a moose. For the most part the walk around the top and descent down were pretty easy, but there were still some stretches over loose rock that were difficult. Took us about 7.5 hours including breaks and time admiring the views/eating lunch. While it was manageable for me and my partner we saw quite a few people struggling. Others seemed to struggle due to lack of proper footwear, poor fitness level, and not having enough water.
