Nice open serine area. Enjoyed the open space views, the trails, the access to the water. Easy to get to

This is a wonderful natural area that has many trails. The beach is a bit hard to find but it’s worth it. It was a great day at the beach.

If you like history, this is worth doing. And if you want kids to run off some energy, this is also good, though you have to be sure they stay withing acceptable areas (not the earthworks). Peaceful (NOW!) and gives some lovely views of the James River. Good signs.

It's important to read the signs at the front entrance that explain everything as there are not really any signs within the fort area itself. There are nice shady trails to walk. Its a great place to picnic or spend a relaxing day at the small beach on the calm James River. There are picnic tables and bbq grills at the front entrance too. Also, it is dog friendly. There are no buildings to see, but it is an interesting place to visit just because of how old it is and to see the earthworks.

Walking the parameter Boykin provides a perspective on what was facing early settlers as well as the soldiers of the various wars conducted on US soil. The Fort played a role in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. It is surrounded by a "historic park" which highlights the fort terrain that was initially established in1623. Today it reflects an intact example the military setup during the Civil War.
Boykin is the location of what is believed to be one of the largest Black Walnut trees in the state of Virginia.
It will be helpful for all to have some background on the Fort's history, otherwise it may seem like a trek in the woods next to the James River.
History buffs will enjoy the stimulation of the setting. Novices will be introduced to a piece of land that has served the country in significant ways since colonial days.

I knew going in this was an earthen fort so we didn't expect any imposing buildings or forts. But the park is poorly marked with little explanation of what we were looking at. My husband is a history buff and even he was lost. Some signage would go a long way. I get the beach access but we were there in November...

Stopped off here on our last night in Smithfield, a beautiful setting, with woodland walks and the beach at the end of it all, lots of eagles soaring in the sky and apparently John Smith sailed from here to Richmond. Recommend a visit.

If you are a fan of hikes and quiet places this is the place to visit. There is not much to do it is just a trail that leads to a small beach. Disclosure that there aren't a lot of signs telling you where to go so it could be easy to get lost. Perfect place for a bonfire or collecting shells or a good hike.

Do your homework first. Realize what that fort was and all the modifications, expansions and look at the sheer effort put into the earthworks. When that fort was used, it was very isolated and the effort made is unbelievable. Its heavily wooded now so difficult to take in the fort as a whole.

Old growth trees occupy the grounds, some gorgeous oaks, walnut and some very impressive pines cover are every where. Lots of shaded areas with several large open sections of cantonment. It's a nice place to wonder around and look at the animals/birds.

Its popular with the locals for its access to a beach area on the James river. Many people bring their dogs and not every one control's their dogs so be aware of that.

Bring bug spray when its warm and water too. Its a very pretty spot in the winter, very few people to sit down on the beach and just watch a windy river. But it will be cold...but cool

Enjoy

I got pictures of signs discussing the fort which was by the parking lot, but other than that I was unable to find anything to actually see. I walked up and then down some steps-nothing was marked, saw no cannons and no additional signage. I followed a woman and child bc I figured they knew where they were going. It led us down to the beach. Nothing fort related to see there and then I had to figure out how to get back to the car. Definitely not a place a would walk in alone. My husband and daughter stayed in the car. Good thing because there was NOTHING to see! It was all in the woods. Would not recommend.
