Geocaching brought us here, history kept us for an hour or so. Beautiful area, nice walk. You can see the river through the trees. Lots of signage to teach you the history of the fort. No permanent buildings on site, there are some port-a-potties if nature calls. Bugs were not an issue when we visited, but I imagine the summer months you would need bug spray. This was a great place to visit during Covid pandemic times since we had the area all to ourselves!

Nice open serine area. Enjoyed the open space views, the trails, the access to the water. Easy to get to

The name attracted us - we're from SC, and SC produced a family of Huger patriots . This fort, intended to protect Richmond from Federal incursions up the James River, let us see its importance in Confederate defense, but also its powerlessness once ironclads entered the picture. Signs explaining how the rather large fort was designed help you visualize the scene. We were surprised how very wide the river is at its mouth and even this far up...so it was well worth the trip. Use your GPS to get there - Highway signs not always great - and walk a bit from the parking lot to the fort. That walk helps you see the terrain that was a protection from the land side.

A Sunday drive from Norfolk led me to Fort Huger, located on the James river a little northwest of Smithfield. This Confederate fort was built early in the Civil War to help defend Richmond from incursions by the Union Navy. The fort was abandoned by the Confederacy and occupied by the Union in 1862 and more or less lay abandoned until recent preservation efforts have breathed life again into this historical site. The fort is, at least at the time of this writing, somewhat remote, though I fear this may change given the signs of a residential subdivision being created from the surrounding woodlands, As to the fort itself, it's quite visitor-friendly with well-marked paths, signs, and markers noting things of interest. The wooden footbridge leading over the lowland swamp an into the fort at its one entrance was a standout feature. If you visit, maybe plan for an hour (or two if you're a history or nature nerd who really wants to soak in the ambiance). I would recommend combining a visit to For Huger along with Fort Boykin in Smithfield, and perhaps Bacon's Castle in Surry County for a good historical day trip.

Drove up from Va Bch for a day of historical site seeing. Decided to check out Fort Huger after a local told us about it. Its tucked far back down the road, looks like they are getting ready to build back there. Very easy to locate the Fort entrance. Some signage and a pamphlet with plenty of parking. No bathrooms but there was a port o potty on site. There is a little bit of a walk from the parking lot to the fort. Slight incline, some gravel and a big bridge. Very pretty walk, nice and shaded but extremely secluded. This fort isnt like typical forts with a big cement barrier. They used the land to hide behind so it's a little raised, with peak a boo views of the James River. Several cannons on display with lots of literature explaining everything. It was neat to see but definitely not as amazing of other forts we have seen. Would recommend checking it out if you are in the area.

I visited several years ago, and was decent, and could get a good view of the river and the ghost fleet. Visited again in June 2018, Now tree's and brush block the view, everything is overgrown. Disappointed. Bring bug spray, lots of bugs in June.

My husband and I visited. Its a short walk throught the woods to the old fort. People should understand there are no buildings out there, but it's great to see the earthenworks and and cannons. Check out the views from the decks out there and look for the Navy's ghost fleet (decommissioned ships waiting the be disassembled for scrap).

Learned about Fort Huger while visiting Isle if Wight museum in Smithfield. Made the drive to the fort and enjoyed about an easy 3/4 mike stroll on an nice footpath. Only takes about 20 minutes to see the earthworks and cannons and that’s if you read all the interpretive signs. Small, but well done. I was hoping to have a better view of the James river but woods were blocking the view.

About 3/4 mile out and back on a very even path. Worth the walk to see the earthworks, cannon, and view of the James River.
