Our visit to Historic Jamestowne started with a walk across a wooden boardwalk across a marshland. That in itself was enjoyable, as there were many marsh birds, turtles, salamanders and other critters visible from the boardwalk, along with swamp grasses and cypress.
Walking around Historic Jamestowne was fascinating. Sites to view ranged from a beautiful, fully restored chapel to the remains of the perimeter fencing and some cannons, to "barely there" remnants of building foundations. The handout brochure includes enough information to be able to readily identify most of what you are looking at.
One very interesting observation. They have a photograph of a portrait that was painted of Pocahontas while she was living in England (1600s), and a statue of Pocahontas that was made in the 1800s. The portrait painted in her lifetime shows a woman with a broad face, a heavy jaw, and somewhat blunt, angular features. The statue shows a lithe, Disney-esque "Indian Princess" with doe eyes, high cheek-bones and almost elfin features. A little cultural revisionism?
We had looked forward to spending time at the museum, but as we looked at the description of the exhibits it appeared to be really geared more towards kids, so we passed on it.

We rushed to the Jamestowne site after lunch, with the intention of grabbing a scheduled guided tour of the site. We're glad that we did, because the experience with our guide (Mark) was thoroughly enjoyable and educational. We got to learn about the archeological record of the Jamestowne site, as well as historic interpretations that you just really can't get by doing a self-guided tour. Our admission also gave us access to the artifact museum on-site, which had a many objects to admire (including skeletal remains!).

It took us a short while to understand the admission structure to this site; part of your fee goes to the National Park Service for a 7-day pass (also giving you access to the Yorktown site), while the part of your fee goes specifically to the Jamestown non-profit that conducts archeology on site. We took a moment to briefly observe an active dig site, which we also found interesting.

This National Park is amazing. It is alive with history that is not always taught in schools. The tour guide was dressed and talked in the maner of the English of 500 years ago. His 90 minute talk and tour of the original fort kept us engaged and entertained.

Thank you for visiting Jamestown! Our Willie Balderson is a brilliant colleague. We are so fortunate to have him with us. His portrayal of Anas Todkill is always fantastic. He is a gifted interpreter. We appreciate your kind words and hope you will visit again soon. Historic Jamestowne is part of the National Historical Park system but is also managed as a private-public partnership. Preservation Virginia, a private nonprofit, has owned and operated 22.5 acres of Jamestown Island since the 1890s and was joined by the NPS when they acquired the remainder of the island in the 1930s.

The Historic Jamestown is ran by the National Park service. There is so much to see and learn, with some of it being rather sad, as these early settlers had some very tough times. Sadly, due to COVID, the exhibit at the visitor center is currently not available, which will hopefully eventually change. It is definitely worth the visit.

So much to learn from the historians who are there to tell you the stories of the olden times. Lots of walking here but much better because of the walkway through the trees. Indoor museum too.

We enjoyed this experience very much. We were there on a Saturday, so the archeologists weren't working and some sites were closed because of the pandemic. The programs were fun and informative. We took a tour focused on the life of an enslaved woman, and then met the actress who portrays her for another program. All the interpreters were knowledgeable and enthusiastic. We enjoyed our visit!

This is a well laid out park with nice walking trails. A big plus was being able to bring our pets along. Well worth the entry fee.

First of all it is very cool because this is the site of the first British settlement in the America’s. Second you will see a stature of John Smith. Third you will see a lovely old church too. Lastly, it is a pretty setting.

We were here about 15 years ago and the excavation hadn't begun much. When we came back so much had been completed, including the Culture Center, that we came back a second day to wander around. Wells and foundations have been searched and there are some very fascinating artifacts found. I would go again.
