But Mt Si is always beautiful. With clouds around it, it looks very Japanese. With snow, it is majestic. And when the sun reflects on it, it turns bright orange and you will think you are in Sedona. It is a magical mountain- always changing it 's personality, but never being less than stunning.

Trail head restroom is beyond disgusting. It is an ammonia factory. All involved should be ashamed. Hike is great for training, and views from the top can be very rewarding when clear. I've done it several dozen times and older knees will be unhappy upon decent. If you like being alive, don't attempt Haystack if there is the least bit of moisture unless you are roped. If you see someone running down in crampons that is probably me.

Why oh why am I the only reviewer who dares to say: "The Emperor has no clothes!"?
Yes, my friends, it is true: this hike is nothing to write home about. Let me preface this by saying that my wife and I are fair hikers, having spent years hitting the trails of Rocky Mountains National Park. So, let me explain in a few lines why this Mt. Si hike is a "bomb."Reason number one: It is an arduous hike, not recommended for children or amateur hikers. This is the case, not necessarily because of its length (a respectable 3.5 miles one way), but because of its steep, rocky path and countless switchbacks. Reason number two: the typical Northwestern dense forest completely blocks the view in every direction, to the point of monotony (after half a mile one has developed enough appreciation of it: after that, it is just sheer "deja vu"). Once the view is blocked, one cannot accurately gauge a sense of how much road has been traveled and how much is left before getting to the darn top. Truly, the physical exertion is constant without the sweet reward/consolation of a sense of accomplishment. Reason number three: the humidity. We are not talking Amazon jungle here: and yet enough humidity to cause minor discomfort: a constant reminder of the nagging question: :"Why did we even come here in the first place?"
A final thought: at the entrance of the trail there is an out-house. I have NEVER seen anything more putrid, disgusting and disgraceful than that. It is shameful that one has to pay a fee to enter the trail, but then be deprived of the comfort of a decent public toilet!

This hike is a difficult one for novice hikers. Even though trails we well laid out and easy to follow they are steep and many times rocky. There are very little markers to help you know how far along you are. This means mental stamina is huge. The first two pictures represent the two types of paths you will encounter. The only view until the top is the picture after the trail map. Many switchbacks on this hike and you can see where you are headed next. The final three pics are at the top (not the haystack top), sure it’s nice but probably not worth the hike up and down unless you want the workout.

As many others said this trail is done by many people, many ages, and many sizes plus people training and people just enjoying the hike. So on weekends be prepared to encounter many others on the trail.

Switchbacks. If you are in the mood for switchbacks, then this is the hike for you. It is fairly steep - probably a 10-15% grade. From November to April, you should be prepared for a bit of snow near the top of the trail. The trail is fairly busy and parking can be difficult to find on weekends by mid-morning. You will need a Discover Pass to park here, which can be obtained at many area grocery stores, at REI, and at ranger stations (or at the DMV if you are a Washington resident).

Tip #1
If you continue along the ridge at the top, there is a nice rock scramble to the true summit called the haystack. That last bit will take about 45 minutes.

Tip #2
There is an “old trail” up Mt. Si that starts from the Little Si trailhead that is much less trafficked, more rugged, steeper, and less switchbacky. To take it, start on the Little Si trail. A few hundred yards in, you will see a junction with the Boulder Garden Loop trail. Continue past it on the Little Si trail until the next junction, also with the Garden Loop trail. Take a right turn on this part of the Garden Loop trail and continue to the Old Mount Si trail junction. It is not marked, but it heads directly up the hill and is significant enough that you shouldn’t miss it.

Magic mysterious Mountain.
An Indian legend talks about 2 young lovers who leaped off the Mt Si peak when they could not get married. A Great Eagle was sent by the Great Spirit to catch them and save them from death.
White foggy Clouds or snow decorate the vertical cliffs most of the year.
The "Haystack" peak offers great views but more than a few have slipped fatally on the steep rock face.

I was looking for a day trip from Seattle and found the hike recommended. Even on a wet November day, with all-day rain forecast, there were plenty of people making the two hour hike to the top (about 90 minutes to get back down). There's nothing to see except forest until you reach the peak, and for my trip I simply saw the inside of clouds from the top. But the trail was easy walking (steep but not technical) so as long as you've got stamina and decent fitness you will make it)

This was a beautiful, tranquil, challenging hike. We didn’t make it to the overlook, but the hike was still worth every minute. There were lots of people hiking, but the trail still felt deserted. The forest is simply amazing!

Great, well maintained trail. You pass through several different microclimates on the way up. The view at the top is pretty spectacular. Very few people in the middle of the week. You need a park pass to use the trailhead parking area. One can be obtained from one of the outdoor outfitters in North Bend.

I did this hike mainly because there is a transit shuttle that runs between Capitol hill link station and Mount Si (the service is called trailhead direct). This hike is an expert level with 3100 ft elevation gain in just 4 miles. the bus drops right near the parking lot where there is a restroom and water tap available. there is no water facility once you start the hike, so bring plenty of water. There is a snag fall land almost in between but otherwise it is just steep elevation. I saw few people with kids but a lot with dogs. There were also few mountain runners. At the end of the hike, try to climb onto the rocks to reach the haystock where amazing view awaits. You can see Mt. Rainier, Snoqualmie valley, even Seattle and Bothell on a clear day. I took 2.5 hours to climb up and 2 hours to climb down given that I am a slow hiker. Look for Gray Jay, Stellar's Jay and chipmunk at the top, but please do not feed them anything. I would highly recommend using the trailhead direct transit instead of driving because this trail is highly busy and parking could be limited. Also it is a way to protect the environment with less cars. Discover pass is required for car parking.
