This place is a treasure for everything having to do with wooden boats. There is a large shop where boats are lovingly restored by some incredibly talented craftsmen and women. Visitors are welcome inside the shop so you can watch as old rotten planks are replaced and what was once a hulk is restored to an elegant craft.

There is a store that sells charts, clothing, Boat fittings, line, books, and nautical gift items. I always seem to find something unique that I really need.

There is a pretty nice coffee shop attached to the store. The views of the marina, the sounds, and Mt. Baker are pretty incredible. The pastries are almost as good.

The Center hosts the annual wooden boat festival in September and several sailing races including the race to Alaska.

This is just a cool place to visit when in Pt. Townsend

Touring the maritime center is intriguing. Learned lots about boats, the water and navigation. The center has many learning opportunities for local school children.
Really a great asset to the community.

We visited this Maritime Center as casually walking by and were amazed by what we found inside. There were several individuals either building or making substantial repairs on wooden boats. As were were wondering through the facility, several of the craftsmen stopped to chat with us and answer questions about what they were doing. There are old wooden vessels hanging near the ceiling, appearing just waiting for someone to love and rebuild the vessels .along with numerous interesting artifacts on display. Being in a workshop of this type was just great; there was a lot to see and discuss with the volunteers here. A adjacent boathouse stores beautiful and amazing wooden rowing shells that are all works of art. One is the actual historic boat rowed by the University of Washington eight man team that was portrayed in the book "The Boys in the Boat". This boat is very narrow, over fifty feet long and was a wonder to see.. On the day of our visit the Center was offering a free half hour boat tour of the Port Townsend Harbor captained by a knowledgeable volunteer; this was a special treat. Unfortunately we missed the interactive boat captaining simulator, but did take advantage of the chandlery and gift shop.
I would recommend this center to those interested in boating or carpentry, ( As a result of this experience I am contemplating returning in the fall to enroll in a one week beginners class on boat building.)

This is a good spot to get information on anything connected to the sea around Port Townsend and the place you want to go to for tickets to the Wooden Boat Festival. Plus it’s a great spot to buy a souvenir with good T-shirt’s and hats and even gifts for children
You can join which supports the Center and gives you discounts on a variety of things. Great selection of guide books for the waters and maps too. And right next to it is the coffee shop Velocity

A must to visit! Actually see craftsman working / restoring old wooden boats of various sizes. A cozy coffee shop, and gift store inside. Many nautical supplies: line, cleats etc. A library upstairs, and the third floor at the end of the building has a simulator of a ships bridge. A computerized screen (one of three in the country) training device for real sea Captains! You have the chance to skipper various size ships at this simulator. Recommend this at the top of your list. Check the schedule as to when the Ships Bridge is open.

There's a very nice chandlery, sure, and some boats displayed on the tarmac and some shells displayed in the shell barn, and the Velocity coffee shop.. Very pleasant building, a pier, and great waterfront ambience. All very nice for the visitor. But the real value of this organization is the staff and the volunteers that make its programs work. Such as kids sailing lessons, navigation classes, music events, cider and oyster events, the Race to Alaska, the racing shell storage, and the season's capper - the Wooden Boat Show the weekend after Labor Day. This is our community gem and we love it!

Check it out. It is volunteer operated but the staff come with different backgrounds and passionate with their work.

If you love boats, you'll love this place. Take the tour - well worth it. Especially the captain training center upstairs - don't miss that. A computerized training system for boat captains. And all the wood and hand-built boats. You will want to start building one before you leave the place.
