If you are in the area this is an absolute MUST see! The visitor's center is the place to start. Educational and interesting. The drive under the bridge isn't difficult but not something to do as a lark. It is twisty and sometimes steep and can get unnerving. Be advised.

It’s exhilarating to view the bridge from the view deck at ground level, mid level and at the bottom deck of the 178-step wooden structure!
Awesome view of the winding river nestled in mountains.

The best view of the bridge is from the bottom from the smaller bridge. It’s worth your time to drive down the small windy road to view the bridge from all the view points on the road and the park at the bottom. There are a couple of waterfalls along the road that are beautiful to stop and see.

My husband and I spent a week In October enjoying the natural wonders of West Virginia. We saw Babcock State Park, Hawks Nest, New River Gorge, Grandview of the New River and now wanted to see the New River Gorge Bridge. We always seem to have trouble seeing the bridge. Over ten years ago was our first try. We drove over it back and forth across it without realizing it. Finally we stopped at a gas station where a local told us about the winding road down to get the best view and patiently told us we had been driving across it . This year we didn't find the winding road down but saw the bridge from a viewpoint. The bridge was completed in 1977. It is the second highest bridge in the country at 876 feet above the New River. It has the world's longest single arch steel span at 1700 feet. It is the image on the West Virginia quarter. Next time we come, we'll try to find that winding road down again :-) We saw some good views of the gorge too.

I always wondered why West Virginians selected this bridge for the reverse of the US States quarters. Truly an engineering marvel.
The view from the visitors center is limited, so get other photo shots.

What a great view of the bridge from the boardwalk. It's a but of a hike down to the viewing platform, but it's fun to see the bridge from underneath after driving over it. Be sure to go into visitor center to see the view of the gorge.

The New River Gorge was beautiful! The bridge was very high up and one could drive over it, but there were no walkways for pedestrians to walk over the bridge. Yet, the visitor’s center offered nice views of the scenery. The river and the mountains were downright incredible! The fall foliage was nice despite the fact that the peak had passed. There was ample parking, but there were some wait times to enter the visitor’s center due to the pandemic and the limits on the number of people allowed to enter it at once. There were boardwalks which one could descend to see the bridge, but the boardwalks were slippery from some fallen leaves. Summersville and some of the other adjacent towns were HUGE speed traps of U.S. 19. As long as one obeyed the speed limits, and possibly went below it as I did, one was, in my belief, unlikely to experience any trouble.

Sad that the indoor museum and theater weren't open but the views, both from the visitor center and from the observation deck (just a short walk from the visitor center) were stunning. Highly recommend. Wish we had time to explore more of this beautiful park.

We came for a visit on Tuesday, October 12. The New River Gorge Bridge is the longest single arch bridge in the western hemisphere.
From the Canyon Rim Visitor Center, you can have 2 different vantage points - panoramic view from the top or the arch (lower) level. The Lower Overlook is 178 steps to the bottom viewing platform.
We also did the Endless Wall Trail which allowed for views of the bridge and is a great 2.3 mi (roundtrip) hike to Diamond Point.

Beautiful! The hikes around the area are easy with beautiful views. Can’t wait to do the bridge walk under the bridge. It is supposed to be awesome if you are not afraid of heights.

How do you get to vantage points from which to view the bridge?

You can see it from a walkway and overlook near the visitor center. And if you want to drive down underneath, you can take the one way road - Fayette Station Road. I highly recommend that.

If you drive from Fayetteville to the Canyon Rim Visitor Center, do you go over the bridge?

In light if the covid19 health crisis, is the national park open? If it's not open when we come through the area in late June, is the bridge & road still open? Is there a tentative date, or phase during which the park will relpen?

I hear that during a weekend in October, that you are allowed to parachute off the bridge, base jump. Is this thru a company. Does anyone know anything about this. Thanks...

It was this past Saturday; it’s always the 3rd Saturday in October. Mostly it seems to be through clubs, and there is some type of raffle to determine what “spot” you get on the bridge. You go as many times as you can get down and get back on the bridge. That’s what our tour guide explained when we did the bridge walk.

I believe that it is, but it is best to call the national Park service in the area to be sure. I do know that you can see the gorge from inside the visitor center.
How far is it to walk down into the gorge?

The Kaymoor Miner’s Trail is a very strenuous trail. There are 800 steps down and 800 steps back up. There are so many trails in the area that have awesome views. Consider the Endless Wall trail or Long Point Trail. The Bridge Trail off of Fayette Station Rd allows you to walk to and under the New River Gorge Bridge. All of these trails allow you to walk up, down and around the gorge. Have fun!

Is this a good choice for senior citizens who can't walk too far.

There are two walking paths down. The better one is a boardwalk style staircase that takes you to a viewing location. It is fairly strenuous, but does have resting stations along the way. There is also a paved path that is pretty gentle. it is much easier. If you want really easy access to the views of the bridge. you can drive to the bottom. We did all three on our visit to the bridge. The best views of the bridge were on the drive. Over all,the best views of the river were on the boardwalk path. So if you want some nice views of the bridge take the driving tour. It takes about 45 minutes to an hour and you will see small water falls and rapids as well.

Is it possible to park and view the bridge outside of visitor center hours? I'm afraid it will be closed when we come through
