The drive down into the coulee (valley) where it is located is spectacular as is the scenery once you are on the property. They were hosting a Civil War Encampment on the Sat we were there and we were able to walk through their campsites and talk to the re-enactors before the afternoon skirmish. The Norwegian Homestead was very interesting and there was a guide in the house to explain more about it. What a dedicated group of volunteers to bring it all together! The museum was small but interesting and there’s a gift shop. There are lots of hiking trails that we did not walk but would be interesting to do.

This has a small museum and an associated collection of farm buildings (mostly) set in a quiet valley (coulee) that were built in the area in a style used by Norwegian settlers at end of 19th or beginning of 20th century and then moved to this site. A tour is available and worth waiting for the guide as it gave more insight into living there, how the farms and families grew and what crops they grew. There are several trails to walk the area and see the valley-forest interfaces, with typical wildflowers and wooded areas with streams running through.

We were here on a Wednesday afternoon and were expecting a museum of artifacts and a homestead. Both were here: The Visitors Center had a friendly person who took our money and we walked through the displays in the building and watched the short film.
Afterward we walked down to the homestead, flyer with descriptions of the buildings in hand. I assumed the buildings would be open and we would be able to look through them, but we were only able to view them from the outside as they were locked up tight.
We did not take advantage of any of the trails through the property, although I'm sure they would have been nice.
I only wish we would have known that the buildings would not be open or we wouldn't have gone out of our way to visit at this time.

we stopped on a trip, on a Sunday afternoon, was planning on staying an hour or so, but turned out to be probably 3 hours or more, they had a speaker in the visitors center, and coffee and treats afterword, we are from western Minnesota, and visited with people that have Norwegien relatives from out area, did not spend much time on the grounds or farm area, but just beautifull scenery, looked a little similar to Norway,

this location is scenic and historic! Have been here for school field trips as well as with family exploring. There is cultural, historic sites, artifacts and museum for you to enjoy. Also winding around the property are nature trails to help round out a fun afternoon.

Beautiful setting featuring Norwegian farmstead and 400 acre natural area. The visitors center has a nice selection of immigrant norwegian artifacts. Interesting destination through a beautiful country drive. Take the back roads.

Set in the dramtaic Driftless Area of high hils and green valleys, Norskedalen is a combination historical site -- focusing on Norwegian immigrants to western Wisconsin in the late 19th-early 20th centuries -- and nature preserve. The volunteer tour guide who showed us around was great, very enthusiastic and well-informed. It is easy to understand why the Center is a popular setting for weddings and other events. This is well worth the effort to find.
Besides the buildings and historical exhibits, there are miles of trails through towering trees and over streams.
Since we were part of a small group, the guide drove us around in an estate cart, which was good because there is a lot of territory to cover.

We were driving around the Viroqua area and Coulee Creek and came upon this place on a Sunday in June. It was empty of people, but we parked and walked around. Saw three deer and the cabins, a very idyllic kind place, very peaceful and away from traffic. It neat to know that our State has this kind of heritage Center.

Located 15 miles southeast of La Crosse Wisconsin. This center allows the visitor to take a step back in time and experience the lifestyles of the Norwegian immigrants in the mid-ninteenth century. Note, neither of us are of Norwegian ancestry and we still enjoyed this. After paying our $6.00 per person (well worth it), we watched a short video and learned of their reasons for leaving Norway, why they stopped here, and how agriculture and industry developed as a result. With a knowledgable and personal tour guide we walked through the historic Bekkum Homestead. Set in a 'Tun', or horseshoe, the Homestead is an example of a typical Norwegian farm in the late 19th century. There are miles of hiking trails too that we didn't have time to take but would have loved to do. This could easily be a full day experience. Forget the big attractions, stop here for a real life experience, you won't be disappointed.

We visited on a Saturday and were surprised by how few people were there. It is in the middle of nowhere but totally worth the drive. We started the tour in the main building where they had some exhibits on the Norwegian influence in the area and general history stuff followed by a ten or fifteen minute video. This was all interesting for me and my 13 year old son (we do like learning about history stuff though) but it wasn't worth the trip on its own.
After perusing the two rooms we were escorted on a tour of the grounds which consisted of multiple buildings. We have seen old buildings from this time period before but there were many interesting items and history that our guide was able to contribute that totally make it worthwhile. After visiting the main buildings we had a choice of what to visit next or nothing at all. Since we are from the Pacific Northwest we have never seen anything having to do with growing tobacco so that was of interest to us. We were taken to the tobacco barn where we saw how it was cut and dried and stored. We found this to be very interesting.
You could easily spend a day here as there are multiple hiking trails and plenty of other old buildings to check out. It was hot and there were other things we were interested in seeing in the area so we only spent a few hours here but it was time well spent.
