What an amazing morning exploring and climbing on the rocks. Our family, with three kids between the ages of 7 and 11, had a blast. There seem to be endless bouldering opportunities for all skill levels. It was peaceful and beautiful on this August weekday morning.

Currently the camping isn’t great for $20/night at the main campground as of May 31st. There is no water and no trash service, so bring all the water you need with you and plan on taking all your trash home. No firewood available for sale currently either, so bring all the wood you might need. The restrooms are clean and well stocked though. The views and hiking are great!

I don't recommend attempting to camp here unless you are arriving mid-week in the morning.
We arrived Saturday evening, July 22, 2023 at 6:45 PM thinking we could find a place to dispersed camp. But every spot was full.
It's really not dispersed camping. All the supposed "dispersed" campsites are numbered, and you are only allowed to camp at a numbered site. We spent two hours driving down poorly maintained washed out dirt roads off of Forest Service Road 700, only to discover that every single numbered site was full. We saw multiple other people driving around looking for a camp site.
These dispersed sites must have been designed by an antisocial Sierra Club member, as each individual camp site must have been 10 to 20 acres in size, and hence quite far apart.
And everything is First Come First Serve, so you can't make reservations.
Since this is right off of Interstate 80, it is heavily oversubscribed.
The main attraction is for people who want to climb on large ~200' high formations of smooth granite. They don't have much in the way of flat hiking trails. The formations are scenic, but the hiking was limited for us due to a family member with a hip replacement.

Nice place to visit, but a lot of the area shows signs of over-use by locals. In particular that amount of broken glass.

You can get your hiking or climbing/scrambling fix at Vedauwoo. Well marked trails encircle the rock formation with good views of the surrounding territory. Easy access from Laramie.

My wife and I felt sure that some of the rock formations were staged, but ... not. Absolutely fascinating. Worth the time as you travel dirt/gravel roads.

This was suppose to be a short pit stop on our road trip but turned into over an hour. Wish we had more time to explore. Some great rock formations and trails. Also looks to be a nice spot to camp.

This was a cool stop while driving from Cheyenne to Laramie. My six year old loved climbing the rocks. The trail was easy and beautiful.

Hey! Where did you camp 3 weeks ago? Forest Service website says the campground is closed. Hoping to head up this week if there's camping around. Thanks!

Has anybody had any issues finding a place to camp previously? We’re planning on coming up from Denver, next weekend and are hoping it’s not an issue!

I agree - lots of sites available, as long as you avoid the holiday weekends. There are developed sites near lakes and recreation areas (small fee), and many undeveloped sites (free) along the various roads in the Vedauwoo area.

Does the campground get full in early summer? I see it's walk-in only (no reservations) and will be in the area early June, mid-week.

The best spots do. Much of the campground has been cleared of trees due to pine beetle, so many of the campsites are treeless. Many of those are often available. The upper Campground allows RVs. The lower Campground is tents only.

It means " earthborn". I found this on another website for you.
I think I read something like the indians thought that the indian spirits played here, as if they placed all the rocks like they are.
Despite claims to the contrary, we DO KNOW where the name Vedauwoo comes from. It is an anglicized version of the Arapahoe word "biito'o'wu". The word came about through the interaction of Maybelle Land DeKay, (a Professor of English and Drama at the University of Wyoming in Laramie) and the Arapahoe Indians of the time - and it was used as the title of her play performed live at "Vedauwoo Glen" three times between 1928 and 1931. Ms. DeKay felt strongly the Indians had first discovered the true spirit of the landscape and decided to give her play an Indian name. She asked the Episcopal missionary John Roberts (an acquaintance who was living on the Wind River Reservation at the time) for an Indian word meaning 'earthborn'. Roberts and Ms. DeKay thusly derived the word Vedauwoo from biito'o'wu.
According to Richard Moss, an authority on the Arapahoe language, "earth" is the denotative meaning of 'biito o wu', although it has the connotation of "earthborn" because Arapahoe cosmology dictates the earth is the source of all life. Incidentally, some refer to Vedauwoo as meaning "earthborn spirit" - which is incorrect according to Moss. Grammatically, this phrase is very different in Arapahoe: 'beniito'wuu betee'ouw ceebii'oot'.
