A review of the roads. Once you leave the hardtop of the highway there is about 10 miles of smooth, wide beautifully maintained dirt road. Then a few miles of gravel road with washboard but not bad. I only encountered deep ruts on the last road to Boar's Tusk (marked as rough road). The ruts were only for half a mile and most can be avoided. The last stretch is one vehicle wide, so if someone is leaving one of you will have to pull off. You don't need a lifted Jeep, any SUV or even a sedan with a little clearance can make it.
Boar's Tusk is beautiful and you drive all the way around it. No services or bathroom for miles. I actually had internet driving there but lost it leaving.

What a great day to visit, skies were wide open. Half the drive is on a hard packed dirt road. Next leg on a firm narrow dirt offroad. Last leg on a sandy more rutted offroad. Any standard suv/truck should be fine. Not many turnarounds so fortunately not much traffic right now, only seeing one car. Its a casual hour out of Rock Springs and while you can see this little spaceship thinh from the highway, by the time you get halfway looks like the land to Oz. The closer you get it feela like you ar "Roland approaching the Dark Tower" and I felt like a gunslinger. Saw a couple antelopes along the way and boy was it quiet. A really nice monolith and totally worth my visit.

The Boars Tusk is in the middle of nowhere north of Rock Springs. Probably best to drive out in a 4 wheel drive vehicle. Very interesting rock formation to walk around and appreciate the desert scenery and wildlife.

Boars Tusk is about 30 miles north of Rock Springs, about 18 miles on unimproved/dirt roads and another 3 on a dicey/sandy access road. You might walk in on the access road if you are without 4WD. The tusk is visible for miles but very impressive up close. We were able to walk up and walked the circuit road around. Made it out there fine in a Rav4 but I would not test it when the ground is wet.

We enjoyed the adventure of finding this place, but that’s probably because the weather was perfect and conditions were dry. I do not recommend anyone making this drive in wet conditions or even after any rain unless you have a great 4X4.
You will most likely not have any phone service which was perfectly fine with us, but again, if road conditions are less than ideal it could be problematic.
Once we were close enough, we parked and walked to Boars Tusk. It was definitely worth the trip if you’re into it.
If you’re pressed for time don’t bother, because it’s something you definitely do not arrive to quickly or rush through.

Road to sight was a bit narley. But was worth the venture. Wind blowing only bummer. But that's wyoming for you.

A very good explanation of erosion. I believe this is the lava from inside long ago volcano. The soil erosion over the thousand of years has left only this volcanic core.
It’s out in the middle of no where, but not to be afraid because the road is good! However, do not go anywhere in the Red Desert when it is wet; because of the clay soil you will get stuck!

This is a very cool sight to see. However, it's a long way off the beaten path on a bumpy, dirt road. I'm not sure what we would have done if we had met with a car coming the other direction. This road is only wide enough for one car and is bordered by thick sagebrush. Once you get there, there is a sign prohibiting you from getting close.

Cool landmark at Rock Springs. You can see it from the cr 4-17 or drive beaten path to near - need 4x4, path might be unpassable when wet - and see it well and drive around it. Drive hgw 191 north from Rock Springs about ten miles, turn left at sign Petroglyphs, Sand Dunes, Boars Tusk and drive about 17 miles (CR 4-17) and you see sign Boars Tusk turn left to beaten path.

Because we were traveling with 35 foot trailer in tow, we had to make do with a distant view rather than one that was up close and personal. It was GREAT to see and now I have "braggin' rights" on this landmark.

We will be traveling south on 191 from Yellowstone. Will we be able to see it from the Hwy?
Skrevet 12. desember 2018
Yes you will be able to see it from 191. It is off a ways and won't be all that impressive from the highway tho.
If the roads are good, and you have time, drive in and see the Petroglyphs as well.
