We went around dusk and didnt really see the green colour. We did notice that with imagination, the beach appears to be olive green.
its very difficult to get to the beach from the parking lot. The locals charge $20/person for a roundtrip. They will take you there in their trucks. To get there, it takes about 25 mins each way (ie 50 mins in total) from the parking lot via the truck. I strongly recommend that because unless you are ok to walk long hours, and also know the way, you wont get there. Do not even think of taking your AWD or SUV there as the unpaved path is extremely dangerous. You will get into a serious accident.
The parking is free and there is no entrance fee also

As it is only one of few green sand beaches in the world it is a must see. Nice to swim in the big waves. If you don't want to walk there you have to hire one of the semi legal 4WD drivers that bring you there for about 20 bucks.

We didn’t really think the sand was all that green….more of a brown color. We walked through the dirty, three (3) miles of truck and atv trails to get there. A local with a truck will drive you there, round-trip, for $20.00(not a bad price). Once there, you can walk/climb down a steep sandy/rocky decline to the beach. The beach is also very small. Did I mention brown-not green? There are much better beaches on Big Island to explore.

We loved the Green Beach - sand unlike any we have seen before. It even has gold specks in it - beautiful! We opted for the $20 ride (hold on - it's an adventure!) and were so glad we did (read the next review (Chris) for all the details). It was fun standing in the back of the truck while making our way over the rugged trails. We all agreed on the trip back that it was the best $20 we spent all day, especially after seeing those who were hiking in the heat, sun, and dust! The entire way is scenic. We climbed down to the beach plus up to the cliffs. We had about 45 minutes to explore, which was fine for us, and our driver offered to take photos of everyone. We only waded due to high surf. Very unique beach. Definitely worth experiencing.

Yes, the sand is really green! It is a long, dusty, lava-strewn hike from the parking lot to the beach. Wear close-toed shoes, bring water, and expect to walk for about an hour. After arriving near the beach, it is a steep climb down the cliff face with narrow paths and handholds. When the tide is high, be very careful entering and exiting the ocean - strong currents and waves can be treacherous!
There are locals with 4-wheel drive trucks who will take you back to the parking lot for a price - I regret that we didn't make that choice!

We were at volcanos and didn’t fly out until 3PM, so we stopped here on the way. It was 5.4 miles round trip and we did hike. It was a dirty dusty hike and we wouldn’t have cared, but we just didn’t expect it on the way to the airport. There are guys there with pickups for only $15 each way or $20 round trip. I would suggest taking the pick up down and hiking back up if we did it again. The beach is nice, get there early though. When we arrrived about 9AM there was only about ten people there and five cars in the parking lot. When we left at 11:30AM it was full and not as charming. It’s cool to see, not really green, I expected it to look green, it more of a gold color. I would say only if you need to fill a day.

I’m not an athlete nor do I regularly work out. That said, i decided to join my husband in hiking down to the beach — both ways — and despite my whining, it was well worth it. The swell was strong that day so only the strongest of swimmers stayed out in the water for long periods of time. The sand is a glorious color and texture, much closer to black sand than white.
If you too decide to embrace the hike, bring a lot of water. It was easier with closed toe shoes, although you don’t need hiking boots. We brought only our phones (along with hats, sunscreen and water) which meant that we didn’t have any c@sh on us to get a ride with a local after we were done in the sand. No one that day took Venmo, hence we went round trip on foot.
When we got back, I was exhausted but elated that I had done the hike and stopped along the shore on the way back to enjoy the surf.

This was my daughter’s bucket list and I was skeptical about hearing you could hire a local to drive you down. ( it is 2.25 mile trek through open “desert”). There is a group/family that has made this beach accessible.
Stay to the left at the south point road and the crew will help you park and get a ride for you. Once they have a group gathered you decide how long to stay at the beach. Rodney was a great guide and has been driving to the beach since he was 13. It is about a 10 minute drive out to the beach and you will quickly see why the “hike” is not for everyone.
Once you get to the beach you will have to climb down to the water. The locals have installed some stairs (stay to the right) to help with the climb.
Be sure to pack water, sunscreen, a towel and a snack.

Good hike to the green sand beach but not much of a beach to relax or spend time. The view is stunning though. Budget at least 2 hours of hiking back and forth.

The beach is a unique in being one of 4 places in the world with the volcanic green sand. The drive down to the beach is strictly 4 by 4 or a ride in the back of a truck by local beach guides. You can also walk but iMHO the 6 mile round trip is not worth the heat and the sun.
The ride in the back of the truck is a treat in itself and well worth the 20$ and an hours wait time at the beach. The woman who drove us is an off-roading expert and went through all the gears crossing rocky, bumpy, sandy and steep ruts of the track.
The beach had a very strong current, but it’s fun to take a quick dip and feel the green sand under your toes. Depending on the time of the day pictures give off different hues id green.

Where exactly is the green sand beach? Google Maps shows it NE of the southern most point, while Bing shows it Just North of the southernmost point? Hoping to surprise my wife when we go.

I honestly don’t remember how we found it. It’s confusing because there is not a road anywhere near. You follow the signs to it… then you walk a very very long way or let a local take you in the back of a pick up truck off roading. I had friends who paid the $20 cash for the ride and it was worth it!
Hi! Are locals still offering rides to Papakolea Green Sand Beach? If so, are they already there as early as 7:00 am?

I did not consider it exactly an easy hike as you are being scoured by sand blown by strong winds the entire way, good luck keeping your head up. It took us considerably longer than 45 minutes for that reason.
Of course, the ride given by locals is somewhat of a hair-raising experience itself!

Hi,
Can someone confirm that the shuttles are still an option as of 2/9/2020? I have a torn ACL and can't do the beach if I can't get a ride in. Please let me know!

When we were there in November, shuttles were still running. However, access to the beach is down a steep set of stairs/path and may not be very easy to navigate if you are still recovering from ACL surgery. Its worth it though if you are into out of the way places not everyone gets to see. Good luck

Anyone see any signs of a break-in at the parking lot? Locals warn about parking, but I haven't heard any visitors mention having their cars broken into.
Eve B
Lenexa, KS25 bidrag
Lots of coming and going seems like it would discourage break-ins, but for vehicles parked further down the road away from the grass "lot," the anonymity could certainly make it possible if you can make it look like you're just getting into your own car. Who would know the difference?
I find the comments about "sketchiness" offensive. Folks aren't suspect just because they're brown and driving off-road vehicles with duct tape on the upholstery. No one in their right mind would drive a nice Jeep or truck in the 6-foot sandy ruts between the parking and the green sand. Good grief.
The transport operation may be informal, but it seems to be widely known and local authorities don't appear to have a problem with it. Our driver was personable, careful, and thoughtful.
As several others have said, don't make poor choices that offer enticing theft opportunities, like leaving lots of valuables visible and easily accessible. Just like every other place in the world. There is no particular risk here that isn't a risk everywhere.

If a local drives you to the green sand beach, how long do you get to stay for before they take you back?

You can negotiate the time spent on the beach. You don’t necessarily have to get a ride back with the same local who drove you to the beach. There are other locals who can take you back usually every 30-60min. You just need to ask if they have room in their vehicles for you.

I heard from someone that today (April 1 2019) the local $20 shuttles from the parking lot to the beach were ending due to new government regulations. I could very well be getting incorrect information. Does anyone know if this is true?

You can drive to the cliffs further south. There is a road, fairly rough, but drivable, where the divers jump off. It's above the beach to the south and a pretty good walk down to the actual beach if you're able to go down some big rock. Haven't been there in a while but it's easily accessible by car or 4 wheel or truck.
How much is the ride down to the beach and do they only take cash?
Lonny M
Hickory, NC45 bidrag
It is about 3 miles to walk and the walk is difficult. The ride is about 20 minutes and is $20 per person cash only. Some people walked and took the ride back for half the price, if there was a driver that had space. Most that walked one way were very happy to have a ride back. A regular car cannot make the drive and even a 4 wheel drive will probably get banged up as the turns are difficult. I'd pay the $20. The Green Sand Beach trip was a highlight of our visit to the Big Island. I am 70 years old and my wife is 76.

Hi. I do not know how to drive, but I would love to visit the green sand beach. Is there any way/ public transport/ rideshare etc from the Kona / Hilo side to there? Thanks!

So since I wrote this review, I have been there many times. If you can't drive, talk a friend into going with you. Make sure they drive!! LOL. Once you are in South Point, there are often locals who will drive you there for a price. You can try bargaining, but they stick together and have set the price. When I have driven, there are always people walking. It is not that far! I drove there once with 5 people in my SUV, and another couple I knew were walking. The road is rough enough that they arrived 10 minutes after we did!! I am gimped, so walking is not an option for me! So when you stand looking out at the ocean from the boat launch, turn left and walk. Stay between the fence and the ocean. The beach is not huge, so don't miss it. I have been there with no one else but my friends and I. And I have been there when there are a couple hundred people. Most of them had walked. It's worth it!!
Fionicaly. I will try to get hold of you next time I go through this website...

If you follow the road all the way to the South Point, they have a sign for Green Sand Beach parking and the locals are parked in there. They pretty much approach everyone who pulls in but you'll be able to spot them as they have trucks with couches in the back or trucks with built up hand rails. It seems kind of sketchy but it really added to our experience! Enjoy - it was totally worth it!
how rough is the water where they cliff jump? Im not the best swimmer but i can swim fairly well. im just a little worried about strong current and how far u must swim to get out.

I would not jump. Don't do it..... Today my wife and I visited. Just as we showed up they were dragging out a lady that drown in front of 40 plus people. From what we heard she jumped in but was unable to climb the ladder to get out. Sadly it appears she got tired and that was it.
I looked at this flimsy old steel ladder and I don't think I would make it out... Also the surf was above average. Whoever she was... Rest on peace. Sad day.
