We drove to the winery after being at the National Park. The wine was good. I liked the Pinot Noir. I don’t believe the grapes are grown in the area (or on the island).

After putting a vineyard in Romancing Starlight, a lot of readers ask me if there really is a vineyard on the Big Island. Why, yes... in fact, it's THIS one that inspired me with their sweet wines and some of the most unusually delightful tastes I've encountered. Infusion tea wine? Guava grape? Macadamia Nut? Yes, please! But my favorite is actually in my refrigerator now, even though I'm four thousand miles away: "Volcano Red." This is the one I picture Ryder buying for his boss back home. A tasting is an absolute MUST because the wines taste different here on the island than you might be used to. I'm usually a Chardonnay kind of gal. But here, it's Volcano Red, all the way!! A wonderful stop when you're on this side of the island.

My husband and I stopped by this winery on our way into the National Park. The staff was so friendly and the wines were fruity and sweet! Not your typical wine made with all grapes, most of their wines are blended with other fruits which makes them unique to the island. We ended up shipping half a case of the Volcano Red back to mainland! Definitely stop by when you're in the area. Military friendly too!

Go for the experience, not the wine.
Many of my friends will not visit the Volcano Winery because these wines are not up to caliber on my friend's requirements; such as aged cabs and deep complex reds. Most of wines here are sweet and fruity. There was even a wine here that tasted like curry, and it was novel, but not for serious wine aficionados. We used to belong to a wine home-brew club and many of the wines tasted like the ones at the Volcano Winery.
We didn't make any reservations as we just came for the tasting and to shop in the gift shop, but if you want the tour of the winery, you will have to make advance reservations for an additional fee.
When you walk in, there's no sign directing you to any tastings or what to do; you go in and walk up to someone and ask them about it. The woman we had giving us the tasting would occasionally disappear for a while and we just stood around between tastings wondering where she went or what we needed to do, go up to the counter? She would show up at the counter that I walked up to and said she would be right with us, so that was good, otherwise I had no idea what to expect. It wasn't very busy but maybe she had to do other things in the back, but it would have been nice to know this ahead of time and not left hanging.
Tastings were $18.00 for small pours of 1-oz each of 6 wines in a cute glass, from driest to sweetest. My husband wasn't a big fan of any of the wines, but I bought a small bottle of the Mac Nut Honey Wine for $25.00 and the tiny tasting wine glass with their logo for $13.00. Although they didn't make you feel obligated to buy anything, I felt I needed to support a local business, so I bought the wine, the glass and a few things from the gift shop.
I was excited about the tea-wine infusion, but the bottle was $42.00 and the tea-wine infusion wasn't what I imagined. I am inspired to make my own tea-wine infusion after tasting theirs and I'm planning on infusing some white wine with Emma's Vanilla Blossoms tea blend with flowers/citrus and vanilla that I purchased at the Hawaiian Vanilla Company in Paauilo (see my review).
At the end when you pay, you're expected to leave a tip for the wine tasting, which I am not used to being from old-school lineage from California and Washington wineries where tipping is only meant for exemplary service, but we did so anyway as it was clearly on the electronic tablet and not leaving a tip would have made you look bad.
Return factor - it was worth the trip out there just to say we've done it, but probably will not go back.

We read some good reviews for this winery but I must say if you do not look worthy of entering the establishment don't expect to come away feeling good. After 15 minutes of not being acknowledged and asked if we would like to have a Tasting we felt awkward to say the least. Did I mention the younger couples around us had no problem being offered tastings and explanations of the various wines - we are just your average Joe Schmoe and Plain Jane. We did buy a bottle unlike the others and at checkout we still were not acknowledged - very unprofessional. Ps The Valcano Red Wine was very sweet BUT if we had been offered a sampling we would have bought another Wine. Why did we buy a bottle you ask? Because that was the whole point of our visit!!!

Wow! What a sweet winery. Take the tour, it’s absolutely worth. Cole, our guide, was really great and super friendly. The wine is great too! Don’t except your typical wine… it’s volcano wine! We had a blast. Mahalo Cole!!

Nice enough staff. Pretty location. Terrible wines.
The wines range from awful (Pinot noir and guava) to average (mead).
Obscenely overpriced

The wine tasting wasn't as good as the year before. The pour was less. #Eek! Other then that, we picked up our monthly bottles & enjoyed it outside near the fireplace. Since this is the only winery here on the Big Island it's a must to go too.

Question- we plan to visit this week and are curious if you serve food at all? Can't wait to try to some yummy wines!

We do not have food except that we do sell gourmet cheese spreads that are made at the winery with crackers. We also have a barbeque for KapohoKine tours that visit our winery every evening at 5PM.
There are some very fine restaurants in the village of Volcano several miles from us.
We look forward to seeing you,

Limited selection of cheese plates to pair with their wine tastings. Taste the entire flight of wines to get an appreciation for the diversity of the wines.

How much are the wine tastings? Also, we will have our emotional support dog with us. He is very calm and well behaved. Would he be allowed to sit with us in the picnic area?

We have two different flights for wine tasting. The standard is $5.00 and includes tasting of 7 different wines. For the premium flight, which is $8.00, the tasting includes our Tea Wine, Infusion.
We are definitely pet friendly and as long as the pet is not disturbing other customers, we love to have them.

What is the príce of the wine tasting/tour? How much time should we allocate out of the day for this tour/tasting?

Aloha! Though we don't have a standard tour set up, I am always willing to take people out on a tour if they ask and the weather is not terrible. If I am not around, it will depend on how busy it is in the tasting room. If not too busy, someone will happily take you on a tour. The tasting really is up to you. We sell cheese spreads so many people take their time and enjoy a cheese spread with crackers while they are tasting. Others, just go through the tasting. With a tour and tasting, one hour is probably plenty. If you want to have a leisurely glass of wine or cheese spread with the tasting, you should allow more time. We do have a nice picnic area as well for nice days. We look forward to seeing you!
