AllTrails classifies this hike as a "Moderate" but with the long very steep ascents / descents I'd say it is on the verge of "Hard" because you definitely will get a very good workout especially if you ascend to the second lookout of Hanalei. Even if you only make it to the first lookout, the views are amazing and worth it. Most of it is shaded so it a good hike for a hot, summer day. Use insect repellent because it can be buggy.
Fortunately, it did not rain the week we were in Kauai so the trail was not muddy which would have definitely made it "Hard."

We only ventured a short walk since the mud was very deep. The drive into the area was pretty and it was not out of the way if you want to try it.

That trail is a rather short one, about an hour one way, but offers a very good view to Hanalei and Hanalei Beach. It's steep and slippery but the viewpoint to Hanalei is worth it. From that viewpoint is another section to the end mostly through the forest but the view to a valley at the end is not worth it.

Beautiful hike we made it to the second lookout on a pretty dry day still a little muddy but if you take your time and soak in the beauty not too bad. We met a local on the trail who passed us hiking barefoot she was kind and asked if we would like our picture taken. Be sure to stop and also check out the bird sanctuary. At the end standing In parking lot looking right down the road there is a good rock to sit on and rinse your shoes.

It started out a little muddy, but only for the first 5 minutes. It's an out an back hike, we didn't get to the second overlook, but the first overlook was awe-inspiring. It was steep in spots and would have been difficult if wet, but it was pretty dry the day we went.

Great hike with awesome views of the Hanalei bay and surrounding peaks. We lucked out with the trail being completely dry (which we hear is not very common). It is a steep hike, but we enjoyed it as well as our kids (9 & 12). It is an out & back trail with multiple viewpoints ... we turned around at the second view point after about 1.3 mile / 1 hr uphill hike.
Worth it, especially if you fail to make reservation for Kalalau trail like we did and want some last minute hiking option. The trail and the parking at trailhead were not busy when we were here (July 2022, arriving to trailhead around 10am).

I crossed a main road bridge and immediately turned to drive on a dirt road to the back parking area.
After crossing a wooden bridge, I noticed lots of walking poles on the ground.
The hike is steep here and there. The rain will make the soil slippery, a walking pole is a good choice, it will help me balance my weight as I hike back down.
The trail had frogs and lots of ripe small fruits on the ground.
Grabbing a rope with knots allowed me to make it up to the vista area with a bench.
I chose not to go further up because I was warned that it gets difficult and dangerous. The view from the bench and the cardiovascular exercise makes this trail worth it.

The incline made this a tough hike for me and the rain/clouds made for an overcast misty view of Hanalei bay. But because no permits are available for Kalalau trail, I wanted to do this as an easier alternative hike in the north.

Despite the 5-star reviews elsewhere on TripAdvisor, I would rate this as a "break-even," 3-star hike because the views at the top are beautifully spectacular but the hiking is very challenging when it's wet (and it's almost always wet) due to the slipperiness on mostly steep slopes. So the views sort of make the hiking worthwhile, but the hiking itself can be monotonous and risky. It's a 1,200 foot climb to the top and it's mostly all fairly steep up hill (and down hill on the way back), hiking on a lot of raised, braided roots or slippery mud and mud steps. I've hiked this trail twice and the same experience both times -- don't ask me why we decided to hike it again. I'm 53 and use walking sticks to help with balance. But even with hiking boots and walking sticks, this last time I slipped and fell on the way down, while being very conscious of how slippery it was and watching every step. When wet, the mud clay can be almost as slippery as ice. Some young locals hike this trail in flip flops -- it seems they've been doing it since they were babies, but to me it seems insane, and I consider myself an intermediate hiker. To first-timers, I would just urge extreme caution: wear hiking boots, and consider walking sticks or grabbing at least one natural stick on the way up to help you. Bring lots of water -- it is very hot and muggy through the summer and into the fall. The views from above are really beyond compare and make the hike worthwhile, but just at that point of worthwhile. I wish the views along the hike were nicer throughout, and that it wasn't so steep all the way up. I regret hiking this trail a second time. Do yourself a favor and instead go to Ha'ena State Park which is very close (though you need to buy a parking pass in advance). There you can access the Napali Coast Trail and also go swimming at the beach and picnic after your hike. Many people hiking Okolehao Trail are doing it because they couldn't get into Ha-ena State Park (that was our situation both times). If you do Okoleahao, it's a great workout, technically challenging hike because of the steep slope and tricky footing and there are amazing views, but be careful! Most of the steps on the way down, in particular, can be treacherous when it's wet (and, as noted, it's almost always wet).

When you’re on the North Shore staring up at the mysterious pinnacles of Na Pali topped by clouds, you may wonder what it’s like in top. This hike, unlike the more famous Kalalua trail, takes you there. It’s a fairly steep hike through a dense tropical jungle, punctuated by countless strawberry guava trees offering their delightful wares (summer only), but be forewarned—you’ll spend as much time flat on your ass as boldly plunging upwards. This is the most slippery trail that I’ve been on in Kauai, and that’s saying a lot. Be especially careful going downhill after it rains—and it ALWAYS rains—a serious fall might involve more than a pair of destroyed shorts. There are a number of impressive viewpoints. Unfortunately, by the time I reached the top, it was pouring rain, and everything was covered in cloud, so I can only guess that you get a view of the north and east shores. Well worth the trouble—this is a unique experience.

Has anyone hiked this trail after the April flood? If so, what trail map / directions did you use? I am concerned that any pre-flood map / directions may no longer be applicable if the flood damaged any marked trails. Mahalo.

Yes was just there and did this hike. Clearly visible parking lot with a small bridge with a sign on it marking the trail head. Very steep and muddy, but a very fun hike. My wife and I are pushing 50 and not in great shape but hike a couple times a month. Our son is 14 and rarely hikes. We all made the 4 mile out and back. The views are stunning and the hike was challenging at times and yes mosquitoes are heavy.
