This site exceeded our expectations. This is a must see for Kaua'i to learn about the plants and culture--which is at the heart of Hawai'i. We did a self guided tour and were each handed booklet guides. It was a well-thought out trail and the guidebook was well-written without overwhelming with information. I'd hold it up as an example of what other botanical gardens and cultural heritage sites should be doing. It emphasizes understanding the cultural connection of many plants, the mountains, and more. The trail does a good job of slowing you down and taking in the views and aromas. A very nice, small Hawaiian-made gift shop at the end, with prices well below what we saw in Hanalei proper. My only suggestion is to have someone available at the end to ask any lingering questions.
As for a few previous reviews that complained about being turned away due to not having a reservation, this part of the island is small and has been under intense tourism pressure. The parking lot is small, so reservations are needed, and this also keeps the site and local area from being overwhelmed. People who live here deserve not to have their streets clogged with parked cars--they are very narrow roads. It's not a big deal to reserve a time-slot, and most experiences around the island require reservations. And it's not just for plant lovers--there is a lot of history and culture that is present here.
This site is a non-profit trying to preserve many endangered plants while providing a great educational experience for visitors--it deserves support.

First of all the drive north from Kapaa where we were staying was breathtaking. The Limahuli gardens were beautiful, interesting and educational. The walking paths were very well maintained and some stunning views as you climbed the walking paths. We didn't make reservations but were able to do a self guided tour with a provided guidebook with pictures and great information about all the plants, flowers and trees

To us, it was just ok. Kind of boring. We feel like it is overpriced at $30.00 per person. Takes around one hour and a half to walk around the park if you stop and read all of the information for each plant and tree. Pretty good change of elevation with many steps. Parking is very limited, so a reservation is recommended. Unless you are a plant lover and are really interested in the history of local plants, we would not recommend it.

I wasn't sure if we would make it to this garden, but managed to fit it in on the last day of our trip and was so glad I did! They only have parking for about a dozen cars so grab a reservation. This capacity limit means the garden is quite empty (unless a hikers shuttle just arrived) and so relaxing and gorgeous to explore on your own. It's an amazing way to see the North Shore if you are not hiking Haena - just make a day trip with stops in Hanalei and Tunnels Beach and end here right by the Haena entrance. You will feel like you got to see the Napali coast area close up.

A special botanical garden where you can learn more about the original inhabitants of Kauai and how they lived in nature. Beautifully landscaped, in which it is chosen to bring back the native vegetation as much as possible. Impressive. Compliments for the very informative, easy-to-read guide you get when you visit this garden. Nice to read again at home.

Superb collection of native indigenous plants of Kauai and the Hawaiian Islands Beautifully done. It’s located at the far end of SR 50 past Hanalei. Make a reservation if you want to visit. Well worth a visit.

Fun to walk through and learn the history of the Hawaiians and occasional mixing of visiting Polynesian cultures. How they influenced what the island looks like today and utilized the resources of the island. Learned about land marks and cultural significance to populations indigenous to the island.
Learned a lot about what is/isn't invasive on the island. Changed some of how I saw the island. Made it fun to identify plants on hikes that I went on after visiting this preserve!

Went on the guided tour through Limahuli. Our guide Freddy was great. Had great information and stories. Nice very informative book is provided at the end of the tour. The gardens on Kauai are special places. I would definitely recommend the guided over self guided Freddy makes it very enjoyable.

I booked the guided tour for this place which turned out to be the best idea ever! Nancy was our tour guide. She was extremely knowledgeable about the plants and histories of Kauai and Hawaii. She shared legends and talked about the different types of plants as well as how they arrived at the island if they were brought by Polynesians. In addition, she pointed out extremely rare species.
Advisory: there are a lot of steps going through the gardens and up the hills, so this is not ADA friendly. With that said, the Gardens provide walking sticks to be utilized on the tour and returned afterwards. We had several elderly people in our group that utilized them, but again, a lot of stairs!
I highly recommend visiting.

The Garden provides a booklet with extensive information about what you are seeing and how it relates to past and present inhabitants on the island. Go slowly and read along (or have one person narrate).
We spent two hours enjoying the views. Reservations are required to ensure a parking spot. Even with a reservation, spots are tight to get in and out!

Is it handicap accessible? My mother is in a wheelchair. Just wondering how far, if at all, can she go?
Skrevet 13. februar 2018
No, it’s along and up a canyon and can be rugged and there are many stairs.
Skrevet 13. februar 2018
Is it kids-friendly? We have a 3 year old daughter. Can we take the stroller there?
Thank you.

You might want to go to their sister garden in the southern part of the island. It's the NTBS Allerton Garden. It's a lovely stroll as the gardens were planted by the Allerton's as outdoor rooms. Perfect for the entire family. I wouldn't rule out Limahuli either as it is dependent on your child's willingness to walk. The upper portions of the gardens, where you have the beautiful sweeping views require following a path and stairs up the hill. The tour is self guided so you could see what works for your family.

The walk is not difficult and there are some stairs built in where the path gets a bit steep. There are benches along the way to rest and also cold water at several stops. You can go at your own pace which makes it especially nice.

Do you have to pay to do the tour? Or is that price if you want a tour guide person?
Skrevet 6. mars 2016
There is a fee to enter. I think the self tour is great and you will get a guide book that has a lot of great information in it.
Skrevet 7. mars 2016
How strenuous is the walking? My mom has some back problems.
Skrevet 5. februar 2016
We spent the day here when my 60 year old husband was too ill to spend the day on the beach. You can take a self guided walk at your own pace. Nothing strenuous, well worth the effort!

Can you please tell me the days you are open, and the hours you are open each day? We will be there mid-February and want to plan a visit. Thank you.
