Ok, so I never knew there was some view points of the falls, so whoever wants to see the falls, you need to look for view points along the Waimea Canyon drive, there is no real view on the hike. The hike is great never the less with stunning views of the canyon, you do end up at a mini waterfall, you can take a dip, the nature is lush and it is lovely. Just sorry not to have realized I should have looked out for the view of the falls along the drive too...

I have hiked in the Pacific Northwest, Southern Utah, Yosemite, and Machu Picchu. THIS is not a simple "family" hike. It's quite technical especially after it rains (or while it rains...because its Kauai). If you are used to proper mountain hiking and have hiking shoes, you'll be fine. If you've got hiking poles, even better. If you're one of the many people who venture onto these Kauai trails in Crocs, Tevas, or spanking brand new white runners, I would advise you not go. Simply for the fact that injuries do happen and you getting injured in improper footwear means that someone else is going to have to help you out.

On the way back, we heard a man SCREAM out in pain and I heard a snap. I thought we would turn the corner and see someone with a broken ankle that we would have to help get back to the parking lot. Luckily, it wasn't his ankle - it was his wrist. He had slid out sideways in his runners, put his hand down to stop his fall, and broke his wrist. On a regular hike, getting out with a broken wrist wouldn't be so bad but with the slippery ups and downs, you do need both hands to steady yourself or to hold things for balance. He didn't want any help, so hopefully they got out okay.

Not to scare anyone from doing the hike because it is an exceptional view and a good hike. But we were definitely concerned by the number of people on Kauai trails who would venture out with nothing but a small water bottle in hand, no backpack, no first aid, and strappy sandals. Kauai has some really rugged wilderness and you better be prepared for it.

The drive up to the trailhead was an event in of itself! We stopped several times to take in the view of the Waimea Canyon from different viewpoints. Just amazing.
The trail starts out under the canopy - lush vegetation - really unspoiled. There were a few muddy areas, but nothing too difficult. I could imagine that had it rained before we got there, it could have been a bit challenging.
Once you get above the vegetation, the views are spectacular. And there are so many amazing photo moments on top of the red rock. We hiked to the top of the falls themselves, where you can perch on the edge almost - and if you suffer from vertigo (as I do) it can be a bit daunting. I hung on to a tree, while I took selfies. It is a very comfortable hike, I'd say easy to moderate, but I could see it becoming moderate plus if the rains came in shortly before or during the hike.

Absolutely this is a must see. Kauai terrain varies so greatly on such a small island. This canyon is gorgeous and the hike was pretty tame. We ran the return from the falls and it was not strenuous.

Be forewarned. Wear hiking shoes and bring plenty of water. We had no idea what we were getting into - thought it was a quick hike so were wearing Tevas and brought no water. Two miles in and two miles out of moderate hiking is what we read. That is two miles of extremely steep slopes, twisted, exposed tree roots all along the path and slippery silt-like soil. It took us about three hours to complete. The waterfalls (two of them) at the end of the leg in were small and underwhelming. NOT for senior citizens. Four of our party turned back about five minutes into the hike when the grandmother fell. That was at the start of the trail and it only got worse. About an hour into the trail we came across another 60-ish lady who had fallen and broken her ankle and had been waiting hours for rescue services to arrive. We're up there in age and survived but almost broke the spirits of the teenagers who were with us. Neat experience to do one time if you are completely prepared. We were not.

The hike to the falls was continuous up and down but it was a good work out. The Falls were pretty. Trail to falls would be slick if raining.

The Canyon Trail leads you to the falls. Be sure to pack water and have on decent shoes if has been rainy/wet. Great for a somewhat cloudy day, as there are a few parts that are very exposed (like the red clay ridge to the left of the falls in the photo) or bring a good hat & sunscreen. This trail took about 3-hours for me. Depending on your pace and level of fitness, you might take more (or less) time. Have fun!

An absolute must! This trail is so beautiful and took about 46-60 min to get to the waterfall. When it’s muddy it can be a little slippery but otherwise it’s not difficult. A little steep in some areas but not difficult. The views are BREATH TAKING! You can take your shoes off and step through the waterfall for more photos. Highly recommend!

The walk to the fall is a semi-difficult trail walk that is totally worth it for the view of the canyon alone. I will say that while Waipoo Falls is beautiful, it's a little disappointing that we couldn't get to the bottom of the falls to actually see the 800 feet drop. You can only access the top of the falls.

If you have a 4x4, you can drive down to the start of the trail from the road, but most folks parks on the road and walk-in due to the conditions of the road down.

The trail is on a road most of the way but we decide to walk it as the road started to look questionable and I didn't know if we would be able to turn around as we got further down it. The walk was good but a little slippery so make sure you have some good shoes with tread. Definitely take water and snacks.
The view at the end is worth the effort.
