This was a wonderful experience ! It was so exciting to learn how to paddle correctly, get into and out of the canoe; Our instructor provided extensive education about the safety and about Hawaii in general. This tour was a great addition to our Maui trip.

Highlight of the trip

Highly recommend this trip! Kia'i was a knowledgable and fun guide. I am usually afraid of open water but felt safe and relaxed the whole trip. The paddling was so fun and hands down the best snorkeling of the whole trip. We saw 4 turtles and so many fish. My favorite part was hearing the history of the area and learning about the different types of fish.
Would definitely do the trip again!

Maui Paddle Sports was a no show!!

We were so disappointed. We booked and paid for an outrigger canoe trip. We arrived 30 minutes early as the company had directed us to, and no one ever showed up. We called several times, left messages and emails and still have not heard from the company. I had to file a claim with my credit card company to hopefully receive a refund. DO NOT BOOK WITH THIS COMPANY!!

Disappointing & life changing injury 😢

My husband and I looked forward to going out on this outrigger tour. It was suppose to be a 2 hour outing but we were only out for 1 hour and 15 minutes and this included the 30 minute instruction before hand. Let me say that I am an experienced competitive dragon boat racer and am fully confident in my own skills out on the waters. On this morning the waves were very high and they still took us out which I don’t believe they should have. We were actually waiting for a call that they would be cancelling it as we drove to the beach. Two instructors and four guests including myself, my husband and another couple were on the outrigger. Basically after spending about 45 minutes on the water...much of it just sitting still we headed back into land. Paddling towards the beach and catching a large high wave we were told to paddle fast to ride the wave in. Once the canoe hits the sand we were told to jump out quickly and grab our seat and pull the boat up onto the sand. But as we hit the sand another wave came along. It went over my husbands head who was one seat behind me but the wave hit me straight on my back and in the head and threw me forward under the bench in front of me. My legs were stuck and when pulled out my shins were ripped apart down to the cartlige. The benches were wrapped in some kind of rough material that basically shredded my shins. I was taken to the hospital by ambulance for treatment. Getting over 20 stitches and suffering terrible trauma to my legs. I have severe damage and a very long recovery ahead of me. No one from Maui Paddle even bothered to call to see how I was and only one of the instructors bothered to come say good luck to me as I was loaded into the ambulance. I don’t think this company is very trustworthy. The female instructor told me that they hadn’t been out for weeks because of owners being away. We would not recommend this company. There 2 are other companies to use as we found out after although we have no idea how safe they are. Our decision to go with this company ruined our vacation and still our daily lives. We are finally back home after waiting for an okay from the hospital to travel but I am still not able to work as I struggle to walk and drive. In our opinion - they should not have taken the outrigger out on such rough waves. There were warnings all week about high waves because of the hurricanes off the coast. We also don’t think the instructor/steers person was experienced enough.

One of the best experiences we have ever had. The guys made us so welcome from start to finish , very professional friendly and lots of fun Fabulous views from the water and even did some wave surfing so cool !! Can’t wait to go back and do it all over again. Thank you both so much would definitely recommend . Maui is such a beautiful island and what a great way to see it .

This was a great event! I have mobility issues from knee surgeries and they accomodated me. This is great for young and old. We got to see a Sea Turtle and then surf two waves in the outrigger. Yay! A must do!

Great time and great fun

This was one of those activities that doesn’t feel like it’s being run by a big corporation. Our two guides were very outgoing and friendly which all seemed very genuine. This had a very personal touch which made it all the more fun. Even though there was chit chat and some local history none of it seemed canned.

The water was clear and you could see the bottom in many places. The paddling was easier than I thought but it was a calm day as well. My wife mentioned that she liked seeing turtles and they took us to a place to see some.

Then we surfed on a few waves which was a blast but it takes some effort to catch them and they told us not everyone has the energy to be able to do that.

On a side note, wear your swimsuit and they will stop to let you have a swim and take a waterproof camera since they don’t take pics. (Part of what I like about them that they aren’t hawking add on things to get more of your money) So if you want pics/vid you better get them yourself.

Also, if you are a snorkeler bring your gear because the surrounding beaches are prime for snorkeling. Airport Beach (just a tad north) is great because it’s sandy whereas many Maui beaches are rocky or coral.

If you want a family fun thing to do this is it. And if you surf a wave be sure to sing the Hawaii Five O song as you’re coming in. Yeah its cheesy but hilarious.

Good times!

Had a great time with the crew that we had. I found out that they were mutual friends with my paddling buddy from the mainland. They were very informative, and had my girls paddling like pros in no time. My youngest daughter was talking about jumping off black rock the entire trip to this point, so they took us around the point and let her have a go at it. It made her trip. I was concerned at first having to paddle with my 4 girls, but we got around fairly easy. I would highly recommend this activity for anyone wanting to get out on the water, and be in harmony with the environment.

Unique and fun way to explore the coast

This turned out to be more fun that I expected going into it. The canoes really move when everyone is paddling in sync and because there’s no motor we saw a lot of wildlife, including multiple turtles. Very family friendly way to spend the morning.

Outrigger Canoe Ride

My Wife and I had an outstanding time with Melody and Ashley as our guides on one of the Maui Paddle Sports outrigger canoe trips. We ended up being the only two guests on our canoe trip and felt that the trip was our private tour. We got to see turtles, fish, birds, and the beautiful Maui island from the water. Thank you Melody and Ashley you were great!.
