We loved the Acid War Zone Trail. You park in the little parking lot, before the larger blowhole parking lot if you want to do the trail. We initially passed it up as nobody was parked there at first but turned around in the larger lot to start the trail. Initially it was easy to follow at the beginning but became more difficult once you got into the lava rocks. Look for footprints and head toward the lighthouse/beacon. Then it was quite a climb down the lava rocks toward the shore. Don't stop at the first blowhole you see. This is not the Nakalele Blowhole, but was still fairly impressive. The final leg was to the left of a large, lava boulder, where you cannot see the Nakalele Blowhole until you go around the boulder. We couldn't take our eyes off of this natural wonder!

One of our favorite experiences on our trip! Hiking around this area was beautiful and a party for the senses. Highly recommend.

The coast line is very beautiful, it was very cool to walk on the volcanic rocks. it's worth the time and effort to take the trail. Go early as the trail will get hot. We went in near noon, it was very hot and no shad, the view was amazing, but I was miserable due to the strong sun light and hot temperature. This is a must do in Maui in my opinion.

Everything we read said to park at mile 38 (acid wash) instead of 38.5 (main) to get to the blow hole. We tried it—didn’t find the blowhole but made our own adventure down and out on the volcano rocks. Unreal experience for my wife and me. Five stars.
Some tips: Download your google maps for offline usage before leaving your hotel wifi. Cell service comes and goes on the highway. You won’t be able to download maps after you start your journey.
Once parked go see Andre at Julia banana bread stand. It’s phenomenal.
Follow the road. It will keep you headed in the right direction (not toward water yet). Remember this is a half mile short of the main trail down to blowhole.
If you’re looking to create your own adventure you can tread your way down to the point and watch—damn near feel—the waves crash against the rocks, the wind, the spray.
Keep your eyes on the ocean at all times. We stayed far enough away but rogue waves can get you.

Love just wandering around the lava cliffs and visiting the blowhole. On a calm sunny day we walk through the pools. Blowhole is impressive when the wind and waves are coming from the north or west. Can be VERY windy and wet, and definitely bring water and good shoes. Don’t expect cell service so always think about the safety of the trail. Road there is very winding and several parks along the way, so drive carefully. Respect the local memorials and don’t trespass.

The blowhole is a must see. You can hike as far down as you want to go and get a great view of the blowhole.

Der Acid War Zone Trail bietet interessante Ausblicke auf das Meer. Sehenswert ist aber auch die Landschaft am bw. um den Weg an sich, insbesondere tolle Felsformationen

I'm not sure all of these reviews are for the actual trail. For the hike you need to park at mile marker 38. If you go to mile marker 38.5, you have gone too far and are at the lookout point with a steep walk down and that is not the hike nor is it as exciting. There are better directions in the book Maui Revealed. Anyway, the trail is unmarked and not really well worn, but you can find it. Be sure to take notice so you can go back the way you came. Take water, maybe a few band-aids (one of us tripped). It's a fun hike through some forest-y area, find the lighthouse, and then keep right and onto the lava. It is a rocky hike. There is a small blowhole first but keep going. You will know when you get to the big one as you will see the people from up above wondering where you came from. There are some steep parts and you should def wear good shoes not flip flops because of all the rocks. It's about 1.25-1.5 miles roundtrip probably. Dramatic landscape. Great views. Time it to arrive around high tide so that you can really see the blow hole going. Obviously don't get too close. We hiked this with 2 kids ages 8 and 11.

If you are going to stay up high, the trail is fairly flat and very easy, but if you want to go down to the blowhole, it gets very rocky and rugged and some spots are quite steep, be aware before going down that you will have to climb this to get back up! So 4 stars because that part is fairly difficult, but this out of shape 63 year old made it! Please do NOT wear flip flops or carry a small child in your arms! Seriously, do some people have no common sense?

We stumbled on this trail looking for the blowhole since we stopped at the first parking area and was so glad we did. There are actually two blowholes. Climbing over the lava was fun but some might find it difficult. We are fairly athletic.

Is this a difficult trail? How long does it take to hike one way?

Thank you in advance for your help. I see 2 parkings near the blowhole, I would like to know which one has the easiest way to get down to see the blowhole. Is it the smaller one in the south, the first one when arriving from Kahului, or the largest one in the north (start of the Acid War zone trail, with the Julia's Banana bread stand).
Thank you!

Either one was fairly easy to get to the trail head. But the trail is not easy - probably moderate with a lot of elevation change. The closer one is probably shorter but when we were there you simply had to find a parking spot - lots of cars. If you are driving from Kahului the road is wicked. Lots of spots only one lane and two way traffic. We ended up backing up several times to allow traffic through. And a number of drivers do not understand how to handle a road like that.

No, you can't. Buses stop in Napili. It's still a bit of a drive from there. Walking is definitely not a good idea either. The road becomes narrow and windy and people drive way too fast on it. Too far to walk to anyway. I don't recommend using scooter's either...like I said, narrow windy road and people drive it too fast. I recommend renting a car to see the island, but book it on-line, you'll get a much bette rate then walking in and renting. Even if you're already there, book it on-line on your smart phone while your standing outside the car rental, then go in and pick it up, you'll safe a bundle. You can get vehicles for as little as $25-$30/day. Definitely worth it to get around the island. You really can't get lost. The bus system is good, but it will take you a long time to get around.
